  1. How about we have our own little topic here. Successes, failures, what worked, where we're catching them, etc. Just to kick things off - MN-DNR has released the PDFs of the Fishing and Boating regs for this year and 2023 licenses are now in effect...the 2022 licenses are no longer valid. https://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/fishing/fishing_regs_2023.pdf?v=2023.02.21-19.56.37 https://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/boatwater/boatingguide.pdf
  2. I’ve fished for as long as I can remember, but haven’t bass fished for that long. My dad is a hardcore walleye guy, so naturally I did that most of my life. Walleye fishing made me fall in love with fishing, along with chasing northern pike, trout, and big panfish. I started bass fishing a couple of years ago, and have learned everything by myself. I feel like I’ve come a long way but i’d definitely like to gain more knowledge and experience. Recently I caught a new PB (7.37lbs, caught here in MN). I take my kayak out quite a bit and I’ve started to take the boat out on metro lakes, but sadly I am limited to my dad’s walleye boat. You guys got any recommendations for the metro area? Responses much appreciated Happy fishing!
  3. The ice is melting, the temperatures are rising and the season is almost here! I think I'm going to grab my boat this week because we're going to be well into the 50's this weekend and next week. I'm going to get out and chase some crappies very soon! Here's a question for the MN folks to start the thread off: What new techniques & baits are you going to try to learn this year? Personally, I'm going to give spybaits a whirl this year. The last few years I've learned that I really enjoy finesse fishing and I've added a few spybaits into my arsenal that I'm excited to try.
  4. Going to lake vermilion for minnesota opener and mainly going to be trolling with no minnows but I want to try a swimbait. I'm grabbing some of those gt 360 but what size and color should I get? Doesn't have to be 360 brand but I'd like to get the correct size and color!
  5. Greetings All. A couple of quick ones on fishing the foil in summer.. For tournaments on our northern grass lakes, if you've decided to target milfoil what percentage of the time are you typically spending working the edges vs. up inside the bed probing sweet spots that you've pre-located? Are there any good rules of thumb (weather factors?) which tell you when you want to focus on the edges vs. inside? I've heard many times that hard bottom spots buried up underneath the foil can be the sweetest of the sweet spots. Aside from getting out and imaging in the early spring, are there any good techniques for finding hard bottom areas in foil beds once the weeds are up? Thanks! -- Rick
  6. I live in Minnesota and I was on a steady fall bite from the beginning of October until the end of November. But now I just flat out can't catch fish. Comment if you know of any patterns or techniques that have been catching you bass up north. Thanks
  7. I live in Minneapolis MN and would really love to get one more open water fishing trip in. Does anybody know of any places where I can catch any species of fish this time of year. thanks, charlie
  8. I am heading up to lake Mille Lacs this weekend in search for some smallmouth. Was wondering if anyone has any input on what side of the lake I should fish, what baits, what depth, what structure, etc..
  9. Anyone in the Minneapolis, MN metro area have or used a Ultraskiff Round Boat? Looking at one for small lakes and ponds to hit in the metro area. What do you like about it, what upgrades have you done and worth getting to toss in the back of my truck to hit a small lake? Thanks, C
  10. I fish Crystal Lake in Burnsville/Lakeville fairly regularly and over the past week haven't really had much luck. Caught a few fish a fish on the spinner bait, and a couple on the senko, but otherwise nothing. Anybody got any ideas for different tactics I could try. Any help is appreciated.
  11. Hey guys recently moved to the east metro by Woodbury Minnesota. I'm looking for a decent lake to fish bass from a boat. I've tried demontreville and Jane and had mediocre luck. Any recommendations would be welcome thanks! Trying to keep it within say a 30-40 min drive from Woodbury, closer the better. Thank you. Lew
  12. Does anyone know any lakes near Buffalo,Mn that holds a lot of nice size bass, taking my friend out who has never caught a bass yet.
  13. Hey guys, I'm new here to Bass Resource. I've been using it for information for awhile, and I figured I'd finally make an account. I'm 16 years old from Southeastern Minnesota and I'm fairly new to bass fishing. I have been fishing for my whole life, but I've been learning about bass and they've been my main focus for about 2 years now. Last year I bought my first kayak and a couple weeks ago I purchased my first boat. I usually fish the Mississippi River backwaters, or smaller lakes. I usually take one trip to Northern Minnesota every summer. My favorite way to fish for bass is using a jig or lipless crankbaits. See you guys around the forums, good luck and tight lines!
  14. I see a lot of people on these forums from Florida,Texas,California, and many southern states. Unfortunately I see little talk of northern tactics and teqniques. Specifically for Minnesota lakes, lakes filled with pads and weeds. What sort of teqnioches do those of you who live in this frozen hell use? I plan on using mostly wacky worms, jigs, and spinnerbaits this year. Jerk baits early in the season. What else would you suggest? Thanks!
  15. Hello, First of all thanks so much to replying, I have tried to email shimano asking them about if I have to clean it or what, and they gave me a REALLY bad reply, didn't even answer my question, I have a shimano chronarch 200e6 baitcaster But anyway my problem is that while I was fishing on my yak (while I was standing up)I was facing towards the bank and focusing and a water skier comes by and makes a massive wake, I was caught off guard and almost flipped I dropped the rod and reel and very quickly picked it back up I think it was fully submerged but I'm not 100% on that, I tipped it over not very much water came out and I wiped it off with towel right away, it's still performing like its brand new but I'm not sure if I need to send it in for a deep cleaning or not or just clean and oil it or what, the bearings are also protected and corrosion resistant I got this reel a week ago and I haven't taken it apart yet cause I'm afraid to, I don't know if I should oil it and lube it or what in the world I should do regularly, I use my it about maybe 1-2 a week only in late spring and the whole summer because I'm in minnesota, how often do I need to oil/lube it? What should I use? Can I use any regular oil/lube? Or do I have to buy specific ones for my reel, I know I have to send it in 1 time a year for deep cleaning but can I get away with that without damaging my reel? and I want to keep it for a long time Thank you so much!

    Minnesota!

Hi All, I just got into fishing this year and I'd like to introduce myself. I live in the Twin Cities, MN, and have been exploring the lakes around the cities. I'm mostly looking for bass, but our state's lakes are pretty well-known for walleye and northerns. I read a few fishing books and watched a bunch of YouTube videos and I'm excited to learn more on this forum!
  17. Has any one fished the Mississippi for smallmouth this time of year? I live in Minnesota and once this cold front is over, I'd like to try it since I believe it doesn't freeze here. I'd be fishing in Elk River for Smallmouth. What did you use and did you have success?
  18. I have been watching numerous videos of big swimbaits catching giant fish and being I live in Minnesota I have really been thinking about this. Has anyone had much success up here throwing these big baits? and if so, what are the details - where, when, why, how, tips, tricks, areas to target, etc. Really curious!
  19. I am a northern Minnesota angler who loves chasing smallmouth and largemouth equally. I was wondering if anyone else has fished and/or enjoys some of the great lakes we have up in the northwoods, and if so, what are some of your favorites? I'd be happy to share mine.
  20. I'm 16 almost 17 and I really want to join a bass fishing club. I have looked into it but I don't know what to look for. I want one that is near the metro. Can you tell me any good bass clubs that are near me? Thanks
