  1. So my new SLX XT combo came in today, thanks to everyone who helped me pick out my first combo. So when i first opened the reel, i fumbled it and dropped it and its a bit scratched up lol, but besides that will it be fine? Like will anything inside be misaligned etc. Also where is the lube ports and how many are there? How often should i clean it and how should i clean it/ how many drops of oil do i put? 1-2?
  2. I took apart my new Chronarch CI4+ 151 today to do some maintenance and reoil the bearings. I had no trouble taking off the sideplate housing the brakes; however, even after removing all the screws and handle nuts, the handle-side sideplate isn't coming off. It seems something near the clutch is holding onto it and won't let to. I tried wedging a knife in to pry it open, but it won't give. Has anyone had any similar problems?
  3. What do you ladies/gents do with your gear after use? Do you rinse your reels, or just wipe them down and dry off? Take em off the rods and store them? What do you do with your lures? Rinse, dry off or throw in the bag and pack it in? I clean off any debris and dry off my reels and rods. Store my rods with a sleeve and leave the reels on, no glove. My lures I never leave in the sun even when on the boat for a day of fishing. I just wanted some insight on your general habits and practice, especially from the guys with more experience. I just bought new gear and want to keep everything in working order and looking new.
  4. Hey guys, hope everyone is doing well. So I'll be picking up my first boat in mid June. It's a 2008 Triton 21 hp with a Mercury pro xs 250. My grandfather and Dad have had deep sea boats for most of my life so I'm not completely new to the world and terminology of boating but I was hoping you guys would be able to help give me some of your tips and routines when it comes to owning a boat and how you care for and maintain it? Maybe mention a couple things you wish you knew when you had your first boat. How do you guys care for the trailer? For those of you that run a merc pro xs, what fuels, oils, additives etc. do you use? Any specifics about this engine I should know? so far I've found a few articles from here to help me develop my own routine but any advice would be great. Thanks in advance Kye Abraham
  5. So I've got a Daiwa Laguna that I've only had for a couple weeks. I never took it apart when I initially got it (which I usually like to do) but no big deal. Decided to clean my reels tonight and got both Tatulas and my Zillion done in a breeze. The Laguna, oddly enough, is the cheapest, simplest reel, and when I put it all together and pulled line out to test the drag, it felt weak. Not sure. It is rated at 10lbs max drag but it really doesn't feel like it's at 10lbs. Now I know you guys can't feel it. I'm not asking you to tell me yes or no that it's messed up, but I checked the schematic over and over and took it apart 4 times and made absolutely sure everything was where it belonged. What I'm asking is this... Can over-lubricating the gears lessen the drag tension? it seems an odd question but seriously. Could it? My other reels are as tight as my wife's skinny jeans but the Laguna seems to have lost some poundage on the drag tension. Thoughts? I drench all my reels in oil and it's never been a problem.
  6. I just changed the marine grease on my Spartan Trailer's 'Superlube' hubs. It's quite a bit of work. You basically pump new grease into the hubs while rotating the tire until new grease starts showing signalling that you've expelled all of the old grease and now the hubs are full of new grease. I have small hands so I can't grasp the grease gun normally and have to hold each part and close it which is far more work than regularly doing it. Also, since the hubs take a ton of grease it takes about 50 minutes to do while you are attempting to clean up the old grease and pump the new stuff in and your hands get tired. It's also really messy. Luckily last year I found a battery operated Plews Lubrimatic Grease Gun on sale at Menards for $49 bucks and it was well worth it. It takes a 14 oz. tube of grease not the small 3 oz. tubes that my hubs must have taken 2 of per hub for a total 4 if I recall correctly. Not having to refill the gun with a new tube 4 times per lubing is nice. Did the hubs this year with help from my brother using the battery operated gun and it was way easier, still about a 30 minute job though. Not something I look forward to each year if I don't have too. I have heard some people say they only top off with a little new grease so that they expel any water but don't put all new grease in the hubs. I'm not sure if this is a good idea, but if it works, I'd rather do that than put all new grease in the hubs. Also, I change my my outboards spark plugs every year but I know that some others don't. 1.) What maintenance do you guys do every year? 2.) What do maintenance do you guys do every few years?
  7. Hey guys, I am no mechanic or even really mechanically inclined by any means, so I figured I would ask around here and see if anyone can help me identify a strange issue my old 2 Stroke Evinrude is having. Mind you this motor is from 1986, and is a cantankerous little machine - noisy, loud, and ugly as sin. When I shift into forward and am travelling below about 60% throttle the boat intermittently 'kicks' forward almost as if I have bumped the throttle up real quick then it seems to drop out of gear, before catching back up to the set throttle speed. It's definitely a strange action that occurs every 45 seconds or so. When travelling on plane at full speed this issue does not occur at all, and the ride is normal, with no kicking. Any thoughts? I'm not sure if this is a motor issue, a throttle cable issue, or something else entirely.
  8. Ok, so I have had the 200E6 for about two weeks and have started to see some issues after about the 15th or so cast. Its almost like the bearings are stripped. When I cast it doesnt even go 5-10 and front of me and makes a light screeching noise. Secondly, when I'm actually reeling my lure in its a bumpy retrieve. Not smooth like the initial casts. Is this just a dud? Any maintenance or should I send it back? Thanks!
  9. Hello, so I'm going to be doing reel servicing myself. I was wondering if you should only use acetone on the bearings? I was wondering because i was going to use it on the gear and maybe put some on a quetip to clean up the grease on the inside of the body in my spinning reels and other parts. I would just like to know to be safe, and is it safe to get on your hands or should I wear gloves of something of the sort? Thanks
  10. Hello, I am new to this forum, and kinda knew to this so be easy on me.... But i was wondering, what are some good after market bearings and or parts i could use on my Abu Revo Elite? I was wanting to upgrade my reel for better casting performance, But i wasn't sure on any brands or if there are any after market parts available at all? All comments appreciated... Thank you for your time -John
