  1. So my local little jon boat lake I fished at regularly is now closed off to non-residents of the lake ?. I am super disappointed, the next closest lakes are about an hour away but I have the James river in downtown lynchburg about 20 minutes away! I usually avoid the river because I have no real understanding of how to fish it but now I dont have much of a choice. I will be taking my lil 12 ft jon boat (trolling motor powered) to the james river and was hoping someone could help me out where to start. What types of things should I be doing differently, what should I look for, ect. I fished it a few times in the past from a kayak and basically just cast at laydowns and any eddy I could see. In the summer I had (some) success casting a texas rigged senko down a grass line I found. I know Ill get the hang of it eventually, but would love if someone could help cut down the learning curve. Thanks
  2. Has anyone fished the Annual Bass Fishing Tournament to Benefit the Children's Hospital Foundation on the James River before? This year it is on June 2nd and I am thinking about fishing it. If anyone has fished it before let me know. I would like to know what it's like and how many boats are usually in it. Thinking about taking my dad as my partner for his first tournament. Thanks!
  3. Hello anglers, If there are any kayak anglers who live around Richmond VA please read. I am hosting a fishing tournament on the James River on October 1st from 9-12 am. All of the proceeds will gothe the James River Association and Bass Pro will be providing gift cards. If you are interested please go to www.fishingforthefuture1.weebly.com. Thanks you!
  4. Does anyone have any experience smallmouth fishing around Bell Isle? I feel like it would be pretty good I remember there being some decent size holes to the left of the foot bridge as you are walking to the island and I have seen some large fish over towards the walkway to Browns Island as well as in the Canal there. Whether they were largemouth or smallmouth I'm not sure.
  5. Managed to get on the water for a change last week for a bit. I loaded up with Medium gear rigged for smallmouth and spent the day on the James River. While the big brown footballs escaped me, I managed four species on the day: 2 little smallmouth, 1 largemouth, 2 gar (lost one over 40" right at the side of the kayak but boated a 22" - first one ever), and landed my personal best channel cat at 29 1/4".....3/4" shy of a VA freshwater release citation. All in all, a great day on the water. Here's the beastly cat.
  6. Hey fellow fisherman, Some friends and I fished Belle Isle on the Historic James River in Richmond, Va this last Tuesday. We caught a ton of sunfish throwing grubs, and a few channel cats on some fresh cut bait. We got a few smallies on some crawfish shaped crankbaits, nothing too big. We were limited to the shore, no wading, because we were on a school trip. The area we fished was a beach type area that you reach by turning left off the footbridge if you are walking in from the city. Even without wading, the trip was fairly enjoyable, and we are planning to head back Thursday afternoon. So now, my question is, do any of you guys know of any particularly good spots in the Belle Isle area, for catfish, bass, or anything else? And, have you found any specific lures or baits to work well there other than the standard stuff you would throw at Pony Pasture or Huguenot Flat-water? Thanks in advance! (:
  7. Robious Landing park on the James river in Richmond VA is quite near my house, and whenever I have fished there I haven't had any luck. I was wondering if anyone had fished there and had any tips. Thanks!
  8. Since I live really close to the james river, I really want to try smallmouth bass fishing. My friend told me that he goes all the time to pony pasture and wade across the river to fish. I would like to know what locations are the best around Richmond, va and what lure i should use. The only time I go fishing at the james river is when the shad arrives around April. Thanks.
  9. My son and I participated in the annual Shad Shootout to benenfit Multiple Sclerosis here in Richmond this past weekend. It was his first chance to ride in my Hobie Pro Angler 14, so he took great pleasure in riding shotgun and standing for most of the trip. He was the shad whispere on the day and ended up catching 15 quality shad ranging in size from 12" up to the beast of the day, a 19 1/4" American Shad. He also landed a couple smallish white perch to boot. I made a few casts as well and landed several 15" Hickory Shad and a bunch of whiter perch including a chunky 11 1/2" one. Here's a quick video I made of the outing. Enjoy!
