  1. Hello BR, It's been a while, I was wondering if anybody know some good places to Ice Fish in NH. I'm going to be going to the NH Fishing Expo on Saturday and then on Sunday I will be trying to go Ice fishing alone with my dad for the first time without a experience angler helping us. Does anybody know some good places to ice fish NH and if there is any tips I should know before I go ice fishing? Any help is greatly appreciated, Martin Sierra
  2. I'm looking to buy some rods and reels for ice fishing. Seeing as how I've never ice fished before I don't know how much thought I need to put into buying the "correct" rods and reels. Ideally I'd like about 3-4 rods each for different species or different applications. I really like Fenwick's regular rods so I think I'm going to buy rods from them. I've got a couple picked out for bass to trout to panfish. My question lies in reel selection. Do I have to consider gear ratios (retrieve speed) as much as I do in regular fishing reels. Like normally, if I'm flippin' and pitchin' in the summer I like a fast gear ratio for a quick retrieve, which provides the ability for rapid presentations. Seeing as ice fishing is essentially only vertical jigging, does gear ratio matter in the same regard? Is it based more on species? For example, if I'm fishing for trout would I need something that can reel faster in case they swim directly towards me, Vs. fishing for panfish where I might not need to bring in line as quickly? Does gear ratio even matter? What brands are good and reliable? Geek out, the more detailed and opinionated reply you can give, the better!
  3. I am going to start ice fishing this year (let's see how long its last). I have two tip-ups and plan to buy more once I try it and like it. I bought a 30 inch MH UglyStik Gx2. What are 3-5 lures I absolutely need for using the UglyStik? Not looking to break the bank yet but obviously will buy a more expensive lure to catch fish. I'm mostly interested in catching bass and crappie but if a larger bluegill wants to bite on thats great. I'll be ice fishing in MA and NH only. Thanks guys!
  4. So the ice season here in Utah is going to be starting soon and i was going to target some trophy bluegills a lake called Mantua has produced 2+ Pounders, anyways i was looking at the *** Tickle Stick Ice Fishing Rod's and they have a new 2017 model that is a "Super super ultralight" I am generally just looking for a rod around the $50 price mark that will be really sensitive and good for bluegills so let me know what you think of the tickle stick series and suggest any others you would have in mind thank you!
  5. Temps have averaged below freezing for over a month now, and most of our reservoirs are beginning to ice up. I stopped bass fishing about a month ago, and Ive been working on mods to my ice tent. So far, I added a layer of insulation, and setup a few light bars off of a 12 volt bettery. It should be good to go now for those after work expeditions. How many of you guys are already on ice?
  6. I'm pretty new to ice fishing and heading up northern Wisconsin for the weekend. Since I have no idea what to I am doing, I was wondering if someone could direct me to a general area where one might fish for walleye, crappie, and perch. A lake map is provided below. Thanks for all your help.
  7. I am getting into building my first fishing rod, and I am picking out a blank. Is starting with an ice rod a good choice?
  8. Has anyone taken advantage of the early ice here in Maine to catch some bass through the hardwater? Where at?
  9. What's a good ice fishing combo for under 50$? I'm looking to get started in ice fishing because it feels like winter is never going to end.
  10. So, what are your favorite types of fishing...we all have those methods we are really fond of. For me...I love fishing topwater frogs and poppers in the lily pads. Crankbaits through submerged trees...sign me up. Flipping and pitching, who can resist, and fishing a fluke over a weedbed or worms in the stickups are always a recipe for good times. So, maybe you are an ice fisherman, maybe you are a Kevin Van Dam crankbait burning son of a gun, or you love your dropshot rigs...whatever your poison, tell us about it, we (or at least I) want to hear about it....river fisherman welcome too. On another note....I HATE ponds/lake with banks that have manicured grass running right up to the edge....there is usually no structure, just muck, and water full of ammonia and algae from the decomposing grass. Personally I can't comprehend why one would willingly choose to fish in such a place. Any types of fishing you think automatically makes one eligible for metal health counseling (e.g. ice fishing)? Most importantly, the best kind of fishing is on that lake that feels like a slice of the wild, of heaven...the flit of dragon flies, the shadows of minnows darting through the cattails and reeds stirred by the wind, the ripple of a bass' fins breaking the water to the rhythm of the whippoorwill's last early-morning song on a sunrise painted lake, as life seems to bloom around you and you feel small and transitory, but part of something larger, magnificent. That is my kind of fishing...no manicured grass banks for me, thank you.
  11. Ok, so I live in northern Colorado and the lakes and ponds around here have just kept freezing and starting to unfreeze, but then freeze again. I know a lot of people ice fish around here, but I don't really feel like getting into it right now. I have read the following articles on here: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/prespawn_fishing.html http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/fishing_the_pre-spawn.html I'm not sure though when to start is since it seems like the weather here has mood swings and will freeze again for a few weeks after it being in the 60's for a week. I don't think I've lived anywhere that the bodies of water freeze before. I've only lived here for a little over a year. Does anyone have advice on what weather patterns or anything to look for? Does anyone live in this area that they can give some assistance in figuring this out? Can anyone in the northern states tell me what they do during this period of the year?
  12. Does anyone know how much ice there is in the Concord, NH area yet on lakes/ponds? I want to do some ice fishing this weekend if possible.
