  1. I found a St Croix Mojo Bass casting rod on sale for $75 so I grabbed it. It's a 7'11" heavy powered rod with a moderate fast taper. The rod is made for flipping into heavy cover but with me living in Indiana there isn't a lot of heavy cover in the ponds and lakes that I fish. I need some suggestions on what I can use it for besides flipping.
  2. I’ve been bank fishing a local pond with heavy duckweed on the surface. In the past two days I’ve had 20 bass blow up on my frog, but they all seem to be hitting right behind it and missing the lure. I’ve been rotating between the new 6th sense frog, a terminator popping frog, and a LiveTarget walking frog, going back and forth between black and white. Anyone have any suggestions or changes I could make to get these fish to commit?
  3. Hey all, I've recently switched over from a 4/0 offset worm hook for all my TX rig baits to using a 4/0-5/0 straight shank heavy wire flippin hooks such as the Trokar TK130, Owner Jungle, VMC, etc...I bought a ton. I'm hyped about it, I've caught a lot of good fish flippin brush and tree stumps for spawning bass. But I also own several rods (all of which I built myself using PB,NFC HMX,RS Eternity) I notice I cannot get a good hook set and lose fish way more often if I'm using anything other than a Heavy action rod (blanks rated for 1oz or more) most of my rods are mediums or medium heavy (rated up to 3/4oz) The heaviest tungsten weight I go is usually 1/2oz, but 90% of the time it's 3/8oz. on 50lb braid, snell knot. Am I doing something wrong? Not setting the hook hard enough?
  4. Hi All, New to the group, looking forward to getting some help. Im looking to get a new flipping/pitching rod and am looking at either the Okuma TCS 7’6” H or the similarly-spec’d Phenix Recon Elite 766 (7’6”H). THE Phenix is about 2x the cost of the TCS, so I’m wondering if it’s worth the additional investment or if anyone has any experience with either rod. I also like the Dobyns Champion series, but they are 3x of the Okuma. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.
  5. I am planning on buying a baitcast setup for frogging in the spring/summer. Any suggestions on rods+reels? $150 range or less for rod and for reel.I am leaning towards the dobyns fury magheavy flippin stick and the bps pq2. I'm not brand specific just has to be a flippin stick 7'-7'3 and a reel thats solid, has at leas 6:1 GR, and preferably the simpler to operate the better. some other reels i would consider -h20 mettle (is the gen 2 as good as the first?) -Abu orra sx -shimano caenan
  6. While I'm interested in hearing about your ideal setups, what I'm really looking for (something I can't seem to find) is some type of chart or list that details each rod with their actions, and the techniques that should be applied. Ex: Heavy Fast Rod works best for Frogging but can also be great for ______. Heavy Moderate..... ...and so forth and so on. Reason being, I have several new rods that I'd like to obviously use properly as well as assure myself that any future additions will be necessary--efficiency. ***Thanks for your input.
  7. So, I've got a few rods that I'm looking to pair with the best possible baitcaster possible (obviously subjective when discussing brands). That said, wanted to get an idea as to how I should choose the right reel to match a specific rod. Example, I have G.Loomis MBR844c Heavy Fast... how do I choose the proper reel? I assume that it can withstand a greater fight than my MBR782c Medium Fast that I paired with a Chronarch 200e7. So once again I'm trying to figure out what real peers with each specific flex from Med to Extra Heavy. Thanks!
  8. How would a 7'6" heavy power extra fast action casting rod equiped with a 8.3:1 reel with 14lbs max drag spooled up with 50lb braid hold up against fishing for moderate to trophy sized northerns ?
  9. Im just curious as to what type of fishing a hvy power xf casting rod at 7'6" would be good for? I went to bass pro and saw the johnny morris platinum rods in mh and hvy and the only action the hvy rods come in is xf. ...new to this forum
  10. Hey guys I'm new to the forum and I figured a good way to start off would be by creating a new Topic. Im not sure if this topic has already been created because I'm still getting used to the site but here it is: Medium to Large Swimbaits in Georgia. Has anyone had any luck with them? If so where and what kind? Im just now getting into bigger swim bait fishing so any tips or help are more than welcome. I recently purchased an 801MHFB swimbait rod that is rated 1-6oz and paired it with a Shimano Cardiff 301A. In addition, I purchased a Jackall Gantarel (RT Bluegill color), a Huddleston Top Hook Bluegill (Bluegill Color), and a Huddleston 6" trout (Baby Bass color). Like I said I've just gotten into the swimbait game so all help, tips, and advice are welcome.
  11. I am looking for a cheap rod and i mean like 50 dollars ish. I received a free reel and it is the best reel I've ever owned actually and I want to throw it on a 7ft heavy action bait casting rod, unfortunately I can't afford much ( 50 dollars is a maybe but we will see) so I was wonder if anyone knows any place to get rods cheap. I know it probably will not be good quality but i have to deal with what I can get. Thank you in advance!
  12. Hi I am an angler that fishes Texas. In the recent month we have recieved record rain that flooded our lakes. The lakes have gone from unfishable because they were to shallow to now you can only launch boats in a few number of lakes due to saftey reasons. This great rain has made me wonder how does it affect the bass. I was wondering what they would be doing? Where would they go? How long would it take for them to go back to normal?
  13. Anybody have any input on a inexpensive rod/reel combo for catfish or musky? Under $100 -BeenReel
  14. My buddy recently showed a video to me about deep crankin' hosted by David Dudley. It totally changed my view on deep crankin' and the rod I should select to crank deep for hogs. Ive noticed a few other guys on here like to use Medium-Heavy rods to deep crank, but I own a 7' Heavy power Fast action Duckett Micro Magic and was wondering if it would work just as well. I can't afford to go out and buy a new rod just for this technique, because I am saving up for my first spinning set up for a tournament I am going to be fishing in May. If you guys could just give me some opinions on this deep crankin' theory that would be awesome. I would also like to hear if y'all agree with me using a Heavy power rod instead of a Medium-Heavy. Anyone out there will tell you a Duckett rod has extremely fast action, that is why I believe my Heavy power Duckett will work. Thanks, TCN P.S. Heres the video if your interested-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0hacikQwoc if that doesn't work just search "David Dudley Deep Cranking" on youtube and you should find it pretty easy.
  15. After trying Duckett micro magic for the first time last year I am making a switch for fish them exclusively. I know I want a 7' MH for my Texas rig worms, but my question is will that rod also work for my jig fishing. I don't know if I should move up to a heavy action? The one thing I did notice last year is that the rods seem a little light on the tip and I want to make sure I get a good hook set when I'm pitching a jig in moderate cover. Need advice!
  16. I am going to purchase a St. Croix Premier Casting rod in the near future and I am wondering in anyone has any experience using this rod for frogging. I want a 7 footer but I'm debating between a medium-heavy or heavy (both fast action) because I am worried that the heavy might be too stiff to throw frogs far enough. Any ideas are much appreciated.
  17. i am looking to get a new heavy rod. i am thinking about the dobyn's champion 735c. any thoughts. any suggestions?
