  1. I'm looking to purchase a fish finder for my Autopilot 120 kayak, but I am very new to the electronics portion of fishing. My in-laws will be giving me a gift card to Cabela's, thus I limited my searching to that retailer. Requirements: 7-9" screen - leaning towards a 9" screen. Ability to add a second transducer for Live scope/imaging/etc < insert whatever the brand calls it > Price can't be insane, ideally < $1500 with transducer for side/down scan. The options I found below are on sale, which helps, as I still need more camping gear. Mostly targeting Bass in NY (finger lakes / Lake Erie). So far I found two options: Lowrance HDS LIVE 9 Fish Finder/Chartplotter with transducer $999 https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/lowrance-hds-live-9-fish-finderchartplotter Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 94sv Fish Finder/Chartplotter Combo - Transducer $699 https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/garmin-echomap-uhd-94sv-fish-finderchartplotter-combo My only experience was playing with the Garmin unit at a Bassmaster Elite Series event. I don't need the Live scope/imaging/etc this year, I need to learn the side/down scan first IMO. Thoughts? -Frank
  2. My UHD 93Sv comes preloaded with lakevu g3. 1' contours, basically, wherever you go. Then there are the Garmin "elite survey lakes" available with the ultra download. I checked Garmin's list for their ultra coverage and in CT other than Candlewood none of the places I fish are listed with that feature. From what I can tell reading through all the marketing-speak it seems the elte survey is really what you're buying this for. Or did I miss something? Maybe it's worth it just for Candlewood. But there are some rock cribs just below the waterline where I fish in Maine. I would pay $200 to avoid those things! But that lake isn't listed. Hmmm.
  3. Brand new custom external mount for Ultrex. Never put in water. The mounted picture is from a buddies boat. $250 plus shipping Allows angler to spot lock and control the direction of panoptix. Use link below to access more photos. Email me if interested: hesster8@gmail.com https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8t7en1gyvr3f299/AAAr4DyvtIz3nYbZaIXHYXCha?dl=0
  4. The boat I recently purchased came with a Garmin EchoMap 73cv. I want to install a small unit at the bow. Will the Striker series be compatible with my current transducer or would I need another EchoMap model?
  5. I got an echoMAP Plus 93sv last fall with the 2019 maps, and have updated it to the 2020.0 maps, and have found many lakes to be inaccurately mapped. Some lakes it shows me paddling on land. Some lakes it shows humps where there are none (or the hump is 50 feet to the side). Sometimes it shows dropoffs where I'm supposed to be in 30 feet of water and I'm in 10. Some lakes seem spot on, and others seem wildly inaccurate. I'm 95% sure the issue is not with the GPS in the unit, as it shows me close to some land-based features like docks, ramps, and river/creek channels that enter/exit the lake, but the actual lake topography is inaccurate in many spots. Has anyone else observed this to be true? Minnesota has a lot of lakes so I'm not expecting every single one to be perfect, but I've been pretty disappointed by map accuracy and basically consider them guidelines. I can't trust them for putting me "on the spot" which is really sad. The Navionics acquisition was supposed to give them even better maps but they seem really hit or miss. I love almost everything about my 93sv except the map accuracy. It's making me consider trying a Humminbird just to see if the maps I can get are actually accurate, which I don't want to do because I think their units are incredibly overpriced and I enjoy my 93sv. I just want to be able to go to a point, hump, or ledge that's on the map, and actually be on it when I get there. Any thoughts from anyone else? I'm having a remarkably hard time finding anyone else talking about this.
  6. Hi all! Got a new Nitro bass boat and now looking to replace the old fish finder. Been doing some research but thought I would get other's opinions. Anyone have their best recommendations for a fish finder around $1000 and why? Thanks in advanced for your input!
  7. Looking at buying a Garmin EchoMap Plus 73SV. Opinions on the unit? This would be my first side view fish finder.
  8. I have a basic question. While using the "fishing" chart on my Garmin on my home lake, I get clear contour lines. My question - I know the "full pool" level and have access to the "current pool" level, do I have to adjust the Garmin for the difference, or does it adjust the contours on the map automatically? If I have to do it manually, where is the setting located? Thanks in advance.
  9. I just recently purchased a 17' ProCraft 170 Combo Fish and Ski with a 90 HP Mercury Tracker Pro and had some questions for equipment advise and if anyone knows where to find the dang ladders for this boat. The receivers for the (from the pictures I've seen) stock ladder set up are at an angle toward the rear of the boat and I haven't been able to find any boating ladders at all that fit these receivers. I had a friend of mine recommend a collapsible rope ladder, and I found a few that look promising, but figured I'd ask around before I spent the $35. I've also noticed buttons for seat pads in front of the windows on the front casting deck, but have been unable to find any online or at my local shops that have bottom buttons like that for easy removal. I've just been using my throwable PFD for a booty pad for my lady, but would like to have the real thing. Last, but certainly not least, I have one of the base model Hummingbird fish finders that came with the boat, but would like to get a nicer one. The fish finder setup is located in front of the window, and is an SOB to see when the sun is in front of you. I guess I'll need to take the window off and move the receiver up on the console to make it easier to see. The Garmin Striker 4 was recommended to me by a friend, and it seems like a solid little rig, but I wanted to hear from someone who has some time with actual machine. ?
  10. Hi All, I am in the middle of doing work on my boat for the first time - new TM and Garmin at the console. I have replaced my old 12v 46 lb MG with a new 12v 55lb Terrova. It's all mounted up no problem, but have a few questions below: 1) The current wiring is 8ga and I'd love to just use the existing wiring with a new 60amp circuit breaker to replace the 40amp by the battery. Will this be ok or do I absolutely NEED to run new 6ga? 2) Would you recommend I buy a new MK plug and receptacle? Or can I cut off the old plug from the MG and splice it to the new power cables? 3) Where are most of you mounting your GPS puck? I plan to mount it on the outside console dash, just past the windshield. Any other suggestions? 4) How do you power your GPS puck? Are you running the power all the way back to the battery, or fuse box? Now a few on the Garmin install: 1) Since I am replacing the console unit, can I use the same power wire run by cutting the old unit plug off and splicing into the Garmin power? 2) Another dumb question - I have both bow and console units that are both powered by one set of power cables to the rear battery. How is this possible? I would expect to see two sets of power cables to the rear battery. What am I missing here? Thanks for the taking the time to read and entertain these questions. I am a total newbie to this stuff! Jason
  11. I have a echomap73sv that was bundled with a cv40tm transducer i am swicthing to a gt40tm trans but my unit was bought from bass pro in 2016 and it doesnt have chirp will the gt40tm ?
  12. I just bought a used boat and the bow mounted fishfinder doesn't work. Currently have the Garmin 250c on there. Looking at the Garmin Striker 5cv to replace it. Do I need a new transducer or no?
  13. I was curious if anyone knew if this was even possible. If I had a Garmin echomap chirp 73cv (down imaging) and I purchased a side imaging Garmin transducer, is it possible for the unit to then relay side imaging? I believe they run on the same firmware and the units look exactly alike from the outside. I just wasn't sure if this was possible or not. Thanks
  14. Looking for a new one, I don't need maps or even GPS. Basically I've narrowed it down to 3 specific models. The Garmin striker 7sv, what I like about it is the chirp with down imaging and side imaging it also goes up to 800 KHz on the clear vu and down vu. The Humminbird Helix 7 Chirp SI GPS G2, I like everything about this except it does not have 800 KHz but it has a 455 kHz: 420-520 kHz. The 3rd is the Humminbird Helix 7 DI, it has a higher frequency (800 KHz) for its down imaging but it does not have side imaging....I kinda want side imaging. Right now I have a older Humminbird on my boat, so if I did go with Humminbird I would not need to drill new holes in my boat. Thoughts please.
  15. I just purchased a used 2011 Tracker Pro Team 175 TXW. I'm considering upgrading the two Lowrance fish-finders to new units. I'm looking at the Garmin echoMAP CHIRP 53 CV. I like the map features of this unit. I'm thinking about putting one at the console and one forward by the trolling motor. I understand that both transducers will need to be mounted on the transom because of the side view feature. I'm fairly tech savvy, but I'll admit to being in unfamiliar waters here (pun intended). Any advice, opinions or possible pitfalls in doing this would be appreciated.
  16. Hey guys so I'm about to upgrade to the Garmin echomap chirp 73 sv. Im wondering if I should upgrade and add the panoptix transducer. Has anyone used it? I've seen all the videos and. While it looks sweet I'm not sure if it's worth the money. I'm also in kayak, not a big bass boat but any advice would be awesome!
  17. Looking into some fish finder upgrades and came across some steep discounts on Garmin echoMAP 93sv and Garmin echoMap 73sv units.
  18. So I need to get a transducer for my Garmin Echomap 73sv and I found a used GT-41-TM for sale but I have a question. The GT-40 says its for Shallow water (fresh) and the GT-41says its for rougher deeper waters (salt). I guess my question is: will I not get get good shallow performance from the GT-41 as well? Both are compatible with the unit, I was jus wondering if I will sacrifice shallow water views because this is a deep water unit. I do not fish ocean in my boat at all. ransducer Name Picture Description Garmin P/N Price Freq. (kHz) Power Beam-width (o) LF/HF (-3dB) Max Depth (ft.) 19. Hey guys I currently have a JK Big Tuna and I want to add a fish finder to it. I think that I'm going to pick up a Garmin Striker 7sv. I plan on using it on both the kayak and my friends jon boat. I want to use a Ram Transducer Arm so that I can switch back and forth from both boats, but I don't think that the transducer will mount properly to the arm. The transducer number is GT52HW-TM. It is similar in shape to the Lowrance LSS but is not exactly the same. Does anyone have ideas about how I could get this to work or how I could rig up a transportable system that will get the transducer deep enough in the water for the sidevu to work properly??
  20. Looking at the 5" versions for both. They are both new on the market and the Lowrance website has the price listed as $450. Is this the price without maps? I'm asking because the Lowrance has sidescan and a touchscreen, yet the Garmin is $500. $50 more for no touchscreen or sidescan? I'm aware the Garmin has great maps but is that worth no sidescan? Which do you guys think is better? Trying not to spend more than $500.
  21. Many of you make your own fishing videos, and I would love suggestions on equipment needed for starting to make my own videos. I am going to be giving myself a gift when I lose 30 lbs ( 9 lbs down in my first 2 weeks!). Some things to consider when contemplating a list for me. 1. I usually bank fish or use my small 8 foot plastic boat with a trolling motor. 2. My wife and I are both in education, so lets not look at the highest end materials. 3. Include video editing program suggestions. 4. I anticipate just documenting my fishing excursions at this point, but may want to expand into reviews and how to's. (Just like 2.3 million others, I know). Thanks for all input, suggestions, and tips! Love posting on here and hope to show off all my tiny Kansas bank fishing bass catches soon!
  22. Hey guys just saw this video on the new Garmin Panoptix sonar. It looks like it has potential to be a real game changer with 3D live views of both in front of and under the boat. It supposedly allows you to see your bait as you retrieve it as well as seeing fish moving towards you or away from you and even if they're chasing after your bait. It officially debuts tomorrow at some big marine show in Miami. What are your guys thoughts on this? Do you think it'll be as big of a game changer as side and down imaging? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2AtZb9_z_k
  23. So what am I looking for, what do the different colors mean, i know yellow is the strongest return, but how do I know if it is rock/hard or soft, what do the reds and blues mean? I don't know if it is different for certain fishfinders, but I'm mostly talking about the Garmin Echos. How can I tell what is weeds or wood, etc? Thanks
  24. Alright so I'm looking to get a cheaper fishfinder. One that is accurate with depth, structure, temperature, etc etc. I'm just looking for a fishfinder, not a chartplotter and what not. I have heard some pretty good things about Garmin fishfinders, and for the price I'm def. leaning towards it compared to Lowrance and Humminbird. What do you guys think of Garmin's and more importantly the Garmin Echo 500c. For the price ($250) it has a 5in screen, which is appealing to me, as i was looking at smaller screens in similar price by the two big manufacturers. So yeah if you could give me your opinions on Garmins and the one I'm looking at. Also you can give me some info on other fishfinders if you don't like the Garmin. Thanks
  25. Alright so I'm new to fishfinders as we just got a boat. I'm not looking to spend at anywhere near where people on here would say to. I just want one that will accurately measure depth, temp, obviously easy to read/see the structure etc. It does not have to be in color, but more preferable. I've been looking into Garmin fishfinders. They rated their lower end model the best in field and stream against humminbird and lowrance, (not saying that i should go by that.) I've been looking at the Garmin Echo 300c. I haven't really looked in depth at fishfinders/differences, but I was wondering if you guys can give me a start. I'm looking in the range of $100-$300. Obviously I'm at the upper-end of those numbers, that is just the margin. So if you could give me some tips/list on what to look for in the fish finder, also if you could give me fish finders that you would recommend in this price range, etc, etc. I'm thinking I'm leaning more towards Humminbird and Garmin. Thanks Also sorry for how choppy that was, kind of just threw it together real quick.
