  2. I'm sure I'm not the only one among BR members that's thought about this. If your fishing over very thick weeds, grass, pads, or any thick similar cover can a bass actually tell what your lure is trying to imitate? Now, we have frogs, mice, toads, rats, baby ducks, snakes and I'm sure a few more I havnt seen yet. Over the very thickest cover, do you think a fish can tell the difference between a white mouse, or a white frog? Do you think they can tell the difference between a baby duck lure or a rat lure moving across the surface? I'm not sure, but I believe they can't tell what these baits represent. They sense something moving slowly across the weeds, that moves like a food source, and quickly attack. I've never seen a bass eat a mouse off the surface, nor have I seen one eat a baby duck. I've never seen one eat a rat, and I can't recall ever seeing any rats on the surface , yet each year some big fish strike these baits. I'm convinced, that when casting these lures over the thickest weeds it may not matter what actual bait type that you throw. These strikes are true reaction strikes, and many times the fish probably don't know what they're actually striking at. These lures are popular for summer fishing, and just like all bass lures, are designed to sell. But, for a novice, I would choose maybe one mouse and one frog, and see which style works best for you. Either could work on any given day. I'm convinced that many times, the bait type may not matter very much. What's the consensus here? Agree or disagree?
  3. Looking at a custom frog rod that can either be 7' or 7'6" for a great price and opportunity. What would you guys lean towards? Really hoping to also throw some A rigs and larger swimbaits so the 7'6 looks good but it's rated for 1/2- 1 1/2 so might not toss a frog well and the extra length might make walking frogs uncomfortable. What rod would be more suited to the frog and what would be most versatile? Thanks!
  4. who else loves popping a frog over the pads
  5. So, while I have fallen victim to my share of broken lines and lost lures, I often wonder whether or not I’m pairing my line with the right tackle; obviously not! In my search for answers, very specific answers at that, I’ve come across what seems to have been the most thorough and yet efficient article on ‘bassfishin’ website titled fishing-line-guide [I couldn’t add link for some reason]. I mean, yes!!! Finally, a very detailed article, but... wow! I couldn’t help but feeling like my three rod, three reel arsenal will get me no where. I realize that there ideal setups per technique or presentation but where’s the middle of the road? How can I make the most out of a reel without having to switch out the line with each lure change? For example, if one of my rod and reel combos can work many techniques and handle (obviously) the weight of many lures but technically based on the article requires a different line for each, how do I get around having to switch out the line? Does anyone have better recommendations? I fish (freshwater) with monofilament because I’m fairly new to fishing and that’s what’s always recommended to me. My current reels and rods are as follows: G.Loomis Mag Bass 782c 6’6” Med Fast Mag Bass 844c 7’ Heavy Fast Crankbait 864C DF 7’2” Med-Heavy Mod Shimano Chronarch 200E7 7.0:1 Curado K 6.2:1 & 8.5:1
  6. Hey Everyone! This past year I coughed up the big bucks and bhave bought one sooner! So now Im wondering,"What else am I missing out on?" I am interested in hearing everyone else has learned about specific lures/plastics and which ones seem to far superior to the competition within the same category. thanks!
  7. I'm a little overwhelmed by all of the types and colors of artificial frogs there are! I was in my local BassPro and Dicks the other day with the intention of buying a couple of frogs but my brain melted with all of the choices in brand and color. So my question to you guys and girls: what is your favorite brand and color of frog, and then part 2 of the question, why? What makes one better than another? Gregg
  8. So I went up to the family cottage this past weekend of course with the intent of fishing as much as possible. so I rig up some rods Friday night when I get there, setting up for a day of cranking and jig fishing maybe skipping docks too. Saturday was a very frustrating, I spent 8 hours on the water and only caught 5 fish the biggest on a 1/2oz jig with a zoom chunk, the conditions were blue bird skies basically a completely post frontal day and the only way I could catch fish was to slow down, ned rig, jig, ribbon tail worm but of course I didn't do that I threw deep diving cranks most of the day. I was a little disappointed to say the least but Sunday made up for that, Sunday i get on the water at 8am for a couple hours before I have to leave. I decide to lock a frog in my hand and cover pad beds. my frog of choice was a black spro popping frog now I wasn't sure this was the right colour but I stuck with it. about 15 minutes into frogging my first pad bed I knew it was the right colour. I get a blowup from a nice 3lb fish the frog stuck in her mouth from there on I covered water with the frog and landed 9 more fish in the next hour and a half, which built a ton of confidence in a frog and made my weekend worth it. I realized on the way home that I was being too stubborn on Saturday throwing what I wanted and not what they wanted to eat, I need to be a little more aware of this on the water and not run around too much. overall I'm really looking forward to getting back up there
  9. I've just been getting into bass fishing early this summer and am looking to buy a new set up. I've just been using my walleye set-up and tying a frog or a buzzbait on that but I'm looking to get a set-up just for bass. I've been doing research and I've seen that people say go with a 7'-7'3" heavy casting rod with fast action with heavy braided line (40-55 lb). But as I thought about it more was thinking I'd like to stay with a spinning reel. I have some experience with a baitcaster type reel, it's what I have on my muskie rods. But I'm much more comfortable with a spinning reel and have much better accuracy and finesse with it. So I'm just looking to find out what the best set up for me would be and if a spinning reel can handle heavy braid, or if like 20-25 lb would work. I'll primarily be using frogs and buzzbaits for bass, I'd like to be able to toss a spoon for northern too but that's not essential. Any suggestions for a setup, I'd like to keep it under $250 for the rod and reel, or just feedback would be great. Thanks a lot
  10. Hey everyone, been lurking here for a while, and finally decided to create an account and join this awesome community! First and foremost, I'm looking to get a few jigs, but am unsure where to start! I've read lots of previous topics, and none of them address my question exactly, or not recently. I'm looking to get some jigs, preferably not very expensive. I've started to fish for bass more and more ever since I was exposed to the sport, but I just don't have very much money for a lot of gear. I now love to fish, but just can't afford very much. I have an extremely tight budget, and when I say tight, I mean it! With school payments and everything else, it's hard to afford anything. To say the least, I'm dead broke! For jigs, I would like a couple that work well in mostly any conditions. I usually fish lakes with lots of reeds, weed flats, and sand (Wisconsin lakes, so not the most prime of areas, but still great fishing to be had!) and a couple rivers. It looks like by what has been recommended in the past is generally black/blue and pumpkin/browns. I'm thinking of getting each of these colors in maybe a 3/8 oz. I am thinking it would be a good middle of the road weight that I could fish in shallower and if need be deeper water. For as far as brands, it looks like just about everyone recommends Mike's jigs, Siebert Outdoors or Northstar Custom Baits. I would love to get some jigs like these that everyone swears by, but with shipping and everything, it's looking like they are out of my budget. Would love to have a huge selection to choose from when I'm on the water, but it's not feasible. Are there any good but cheap brands that I should look into? Also, I'm also looking at getting a frog or two to try out. Looks like pad crashers and live target frogs are the way to go, but again, are there any good cheaper options? Any help would be very much appreciated, as I'm a little stuck at the moment. Thanks everyone, and tight lines!
  11. I'm just wondering if anyone has attempted to use a soft plastic frog, like the Z man hard leg frog, on a C-rig. And if so, did you have any luck.
  12. Do large frogs such as the king daddy have much for improvement on the size of fish, or do they just make it harder to set the hook?
  13. So I was thinking about buying a bait caster and throwing some 50lbs braid on it and using it to fish with frogs. What bait caster would be best for this?
  14. Okay I'm looking for some good quality reels for under $150. I'm wanting to get into tourney fishing so I need something that will hold its own when I need it to. I have a Daiwa Tatula Tactical in 8.1:1 spooled with the old school spiderwire stealth 50# green braid and absolutely love it, just wish the drag was a little stouter. I will however be putting it on my C&T-Rig and Jig rod once I get my frogging and flipping setups ironed out. I was looking at getting the *** *** 8.1:1 for $120 from TW but can usually find the *** 8.1, and Concept C 8.1 on eBay new for $155 ish. Brand doesn't matter a whole lot just as long as it will haul in the fish plus the salad bar that usually comes with it when flipping and frogging mats.
  15. So im getting into frog fishing and what are some good frogs to use.
  16. First frog purchase!!! Picked up a Ribbit Top Toad in this exact color. Anybody want to give some opinions on other toads to buy? Do you prefer hard bait or soft bait? what has good leg action? Is it worth it to put some fish scent on it?
  17. Lately, I have been fishing a lot of walking baits. I have noticed that I have been missing a lot of hooksets. Is there anything I can do? Thanks
  18. Looking to purchase this rod specifically for fishing hollow bodied frogs and want your opinions and recommendations.. Does it perform like a typical extra fast or is it slower like many of the Dobyns rods? Mag heavy too much power or just right?
  19. What is everyone's favorite frog these days? The jig is my go-to bait of choice, but with all of the great frogs out now, I have jumped on the bandwagon just a bit. I found these Lunker Frog's at Wal-Mart. Wow. Drag this dude over some lily pads, and DANG. Just saying. So what is the best in your opinion? Spro, Lunker Frog, KVD ?? Colors?
  20. Went to my local DSG and saw they were selling any sized booyah frogs for $4 and any Jawbone frog for $2. I got the booyah pad crasher in black and yellow for the black belly. but the Jawbones have plain white bottoms.. id like to sharpie on some patterns like my spro has on the bottom. Does anyone else do this? Won't the spots on the bottom help catch fish? Thanks (From left to right: booyah black, spro natural green, jawbone chartruse [top right], Jawbone green [bottom right] )
  21. Hey all, I was wondering if anybody had any special mods that they did to their frogs? I have a Plano two-tray filled with tools and tackle just for modding my frogs. My kit includes: A ruler that goes down to the 1/64th of an inch - for precise measurements when reshaping hooks or trimming skirts Strong needle-nose pliers - for reshaping hooks Sharp scissors - for trimming skirts Worm rattles - these are used when the frog needs to be louder Paper clips - I like to poke small holes right above the legs of my frogs to help drain water Bic lighter - I use this to heat the paper clips (above) to make it go in easier Spike It Color Markers - for when my frogs need a little bit more scent Lake Fork Frog Trailer Hooks - these are just for when I'm getting short strikes, but I don't want to trim down the skirts Split shot assortment - this is for emergency situations (I have only used it once or twice in three years) when the weight falls out the back of the frog Super glue - for repairing holes, tears, and replacing weights Lead fly-tying wire - this is for when I need a silent presentation, but still want some weight - I'll just wrap it around the hook a dozen times or so Green, purple, white, chartreuse, black, and brown jig skirts - these are my preferred skirt colors for replacing legs BBs - I keep some BBs (like the ones in BB guns) for when I need my frog to basically sit vertically in the water - I will just use these in place of rattles sometimes too Sharpies - I keep at least a dozen different-colored sharpies to mark my frogs whenever they need a cooler color scheme Spare hollow-belly frogs - I keep the frogs that people want me to modify, the frogs that I want to modify, or the frogs that are really beat up in this box, so I don't forget to work on them Leatherman multi-tool - 'nuff said Sewing needles - these don't really come into play too much, but I occasionally use them when replacing skirts Lots of crane swivels - these are used when replacing double hooks Lots of double hooks - a lot of times, hooks in old frogs will rust out or break - that's when these come into play Last but not least, my big ol' Snag Proof sticker - kind of just there to remind me of my first frog I modded So my question to you is - how do you mod your frogs?
  22. Hey all, I was wondering if anybody could recommend a small kit for soft-plastic pouring. I almost exclusively fish with frogs, so any frog molds you could recommend would be nice too. Thanks!
  23. Hey all, I was wondering if anybody could recommend a small kit for soft-plastic pouring. I almost exclusively fish with frogs, so any frog molds you could recommend would be nice too. Thanks!
  24. Anyone try out one of these frog lures out? They look legit and have seen a good number of you-tube videos on them.
  25. Will be going night fishing at a pond tonight, where almost half of the pond is a big scum and lilypad mat. My question is, would it be a good idea to frog/punch the mats, or to try to to find an area where the water isnt matted over and throw a spook or something. There are a LOT of weeds, so any kind of crankbait is ruled out. Any help would be appreciated.
