  1. I live in Germantown, TN but I am looking for good locations to fish in and around the Memphis, TN and Shelby County area during the winter. Do any of y'all have good suggestions? If you guys have good suggestions, what lures, flies, or baits did y'all use when fishing those locations?
  2. ...or Seven Muskies in Seven Days, The Way to a Happy Heart. Wasn't quite a musky a day, I zeroed on Thursday after loosing a mid 30's fish at the boat, but I'd caught two on Wednesday, so I kept my average up. Nothing huge, started with a 37" right away Saturday night, then a 22" on Sunday, then a 30", a 29", a 27" and 9", skipped Thursday per above and finished with a 34". All were fat, healthy fish, only managed the 29" on a fly, but it was one of mine, and my fishing partner caught a 37" on one of my flies too, so that was cool. No, the 9" isn't a typo...and that was with the tail pinched...cutest little toothy fish I've ever seen. Typical Canadian weather: got clobbered by a storm on the way to the island and soaked everything in the boat that wasn't wrapped in plastic, including me and my fishing partner. Sunny, muggy and hot Sunday and Monday, with buckets-o-skeeters at night to match. Temp dropped 20 degrees and rain and wind kicked us around Tuesday and Wednesday...smallies turned off hard, but musky follows came way up. Had 11 fish follow on Tuesday, 9 on Wed. I can live with that... Sunny and warmer on Thursday, which slowed things down, and about the same on Friday, but more follows. At one point on Wednesday we had two muskies taking turns following everything we threw at them for about 45 minutes. We saw a low 30s fish first, got it to follow a 2nd time, then a high 40s mama came out to play. Tried 4 different flies, spoons, inline spinners, top-water plugs and flies (thought my fishing partner was gonna fill his pants when the big girl came up and stared at his musky popper. No love though, moved on to other spots. Another cool thing - we were working a spot where a tree had fallen off a point - musky city to anyone who's fished for them and a mid 30s musky followed a #5 Mepps out to the boat...we worked her on a big orange fly, a red/white Doctor Spoon and red/white fly. No love (went back and caught her Friday, that was my 34") but at one point we lost sight of her and I went to move the boat off the tree further...and she was hanging off the bow, staring at the trolling motor. She actually tilted down and followed a bit when I bumped it to move us. Proof they're not afraid of anything... My best fish of the trip was a 38" pike that looked like it'd just eaten a bag of bunnies. Caught her on my 2nd cast Tuesday morning in a spot we'd had a follow on Sunday. Our most productive pattern was to approach a spot, work it with gear, working up in size to see if we got a follow, then try flies. We might have done better on flies if we hadn't done this...but I'm glad we didn't. Switching back and forth is lot easier on my 55 year old body that either chucking gear or flies for 6 days straight. Mixing it up when stuff starts get sore made a difference. I'm happy to report that Humminbird's SmartStrike works exactly as advertised. Cut out a lot searching through unproductive water once you got on the pattern for the day. Biggest fish for the week was a 49 1/2" monster caught by our one of our cabin mates on Friday afternoon. Weird catch...the fish was feeding on something on the surface and Ron saw her, fired a topwater muskie lure in front of her...and she ate it. Got real exciting after that to hear them tell the story as she wasn't real interested in coming to the boat...she tail-walked on him twice, went under the boat once and tried to head into Sioux Narrows once. I've got no idea how many musky were boated, but it was a bunch - 4 cabins with 2 boats each with two mostly experienced musky guys can put a lotta fish in boats in a week...the most "total inches" by one guy was just shy of 400". Number of follows was nuts. We were the least experienced guys there, and we went 3, 7, 5, 11, 9, 4 and 6. Anyone who has chased these things will get that. Pike were consistent, lots of 30" plus fish, buckets full in the 20s and a few hammer handles. Smallies were a crazy hot bite Sunday and Monday, but shut down hard Tuesday and Wednesday and came back up to decent fishing Thursday and Friday. LOTW is a lot of fun...I'll be back.
  3. I will be taking a three day vacation to the beach and am packing my fly rod. Does anyone know of places to fish from the shore to catch bass on a 6wt? thanks!
  4. Does anyone have any favorite flies for bluegill in the fall?
  5. ...and it's a Bass Resource article: https://www.bassresource.com/fishing/streamers-bass.html?utm_source=SEPnews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=9417 Works on Largemouth too... That's an 8" fly...hard to see in the pic, but it is...
  6. Hey everyone, I wanted to ask you guys for some advice. My wife and I are planning a vacation to New York state the second week in July and I wanted to do a day float fly fishing trip, while she wants to do some spa day. Since she is not writing this post, I want to get recommendations for location and possible guides up there I should check in out that could fore fill my needs. Any help is greatly appreciated! (I know this is not for awhile off, but I am a planner and dont really care what websites say, only the people that live in the area say.) Thanks, Wdy

  8. Earlier this month B.A.S.S. updated their rod length regulations allowing rods up to ten feet in length on the tournament scene. this opens the door to a variety of new presentations with noodle rods, fly rods, surf rods, monster swimbait rods, etc. Personally I bought a noodle rod for weightless worms and dropshotting and a surf rod for deep cranking and swimbaiting and I have always had a fly rod with shooting line on hand for super finesse topwater situations, which is crazy effective. so out of curiosity what are you planning to do with the new regulations?
  9. Title says it all. I am a 28 year old, married man. I fished a lot growing up in my early teen years. I want to return to fishing, and specifically get into FLY fishing. I live in the KC area. Looking for someone that can show me the ropes of fly fishing, learn, and have some fun on the local ponds, lakes, and streams. I have no current gear, looking to make those purchases soon. Just hard to know what I need and when. I know we are heading into the winter months, would love to pick it up for a hobby and new past time. Anyone interested in teaching and fishing with a young novice with little experience?
  10. An outdoors store in my neighborhood is going out of business and having some great deals, so I though this would be a good time to jump into fly tying. I don't think they have a great tying section, so I want to know what i need. I'd like to tie flies for trout and bluegill. Are there any essential materials that I should buy? I figured that if i got some thread, dubbing, elk hair, hackle, foam, and beadheads i could tie a lot of different basic flies. Is there anything else that I should have to start tying for these species (I know I need a vice and bobbin and other tools).
  11. I've been thinking about trying fly fishing since it can be a fun way to catch bass and is apparently succesful with catching grass carp which i have been trying to catch for a long time now with no success. Also i sometimes visit family up north and love fishing for trout up there. So i'd like to know how much fly gear would cost and if it is worth the investment.
  12. I am going to try fly fishing for trout. What are some essential flies I should have to start my collection?
  13. I read this rod review and am going to buy a new scott tidal but don't know weather to get an 7 weight or and 8 weight? Anyone have any thoughts? Really new to fishing for bass with a fly rod having mostly just been a trout guy for the past 15 years. Thanks!
  14. Any LMBass Fly fishing person in the Wellington or Lake Worth area, that could give me a simple hands-on help on fly casting? If so. message me and lets try to setup a meeting. Thanks.
  15. Dad and I fish together as much as possible. For a while now we have been saltwater fly fishing. We're not great but it is fun. He only fishes using fly rods. I end up fishing with a spinning rod usually throwing soft plastics like flukes. I discovered this site, applied some of the tips and now I feel like I usually have a shot at catching bass. I am dreaming of heading out to Lake O and giving it a shot. Thing is, I don't want my Dad left without a chance for success. Last time we went it was africa hot, we almost got run over, got stuck in hydrilla etc... I'm itching to give it another try now that I know my boat and maybe how to fish a little. When would be the best time to go and as a bonus question, what flies should I get for us? I tied up a bunch of deerhair sliders a while ago and the bass in my canal liked them, what else works? I know I'll pick up some poppers too. I think I'm also going to bring him a spinning rig, maybe I can convince him to try. I don't care as long as he has fun and maybe catches something.
  16. I'm curious if there are, or you can fish for, smallmouth bass in the Colorado River in western Colorado, near Grand Junction. I've Done every google search under the sun and all I can find is that the Division of Wild Life has been trying to remove Smallmouth bass from this part of the river for years. Which makes it sound like there must be fish, right? I mean really they should be paying me to remove these guys from the river for them! But then I look at Colorado's "Places To Fish" Map and the only species of fish listed to be in the Colorado are channel catfish and common carp. But I know this to be incorrect as I never catch rainbow at a pond which has only rainbow trout listed, and catch some monster largemouth and brown trout. I've come here searching for wisdom and experience, someone please please save me from going insane.
  17. Names Andrew, I started fishing about two years ago on live worms wrapped around an available hook, since then I've moved on to the fly and have caught the bug. I am interested in majoring and attaining an advanced degree in a marine biological field, or possibly a fisheries specialty. That leads to the point of the thread. At the moment I am exclusively wade fly fishing (9 weight) a medium sized pond (Width=40 yds Length=120-150) It seems to be extremely well taken care of, I see what seems to be an aerator, there is a rather large pier, plenty of sub surface trees, a few overhangs, and points. It seems to be about 4' deep 4' off the bank I'd guess 8'-10' in the middle. I am starting a fishing log right now and so far the data I am going to collect: Conditions: Sun/Moon rise, noon, set, distance from earth at the time of both, moon phase, Weather: air temp hourly for whatever time fished. I also intend to record what flies I use and what retrieves were used for both succesful and unsuccessful attempts. Lengths, girths, mouth colorations, and where specifically they were caught. I have drawn a map of the pond with a legend of all structure and available cover I am aware of with the intention of adding too. About 5 years ago there was a fish recorded (or so I've been told twice) at 8 pounds. I saw about 4 bass of 5 or more pounds obliterating bream in a shallow flat, and what I believe to be a bass (skepticism comes from size) 12-15LBS on a glance. (Never seen carp, or cats in there, and it was facing the bank at night when I got to see it. My questions are: What am I missing for my daily log? (it is only going to be for this pond.) How should I measure water temp? How to best determine gender? Does anyone have knowledge of what I can derive from the coloration of the inner top lip? Also I am looking for fly patterns that immitate a rather large Bream, I want to target the lunker. I have read pretty religiously since I found this site a few weeks ago and intend on becoming a regulare poster. All tips are welcome, especially fly specific. ...And this turned out to be pretty long and dry, thanks for reading it.
