  1. Yesterdays tournament was far from stellar but in the final 45 minutes I was able to salvage the day after switching to this Go-B-Gone on my drop shot rig. It’s a much larger Goby profile bait and I want to get a few more bags, but they are “Out of Production”. Does anyone have old stock or a recommendation for something similar ?
  2. Somewhat new to drop shotting, I got into at the end of last summer and had pretty great success out of my kayak. I bought a new, higher end (for me) spinning set up last summer so that's why I took a crack at it. The rod is 7' Medium Fast, which I know is considered the most all around spinning set up. But am I going to lose a large % of fish because it's too stiff? Most guys seem to use a ML. I do fish around a lot of grass year round in MA ponds which also makes me feel like a M isn't terrible in my case. Just curious if I should make an investment for this season (I'm going off to college next year so trying to limit how much gear I get between now and then). Thoughts?
  3. Recently had a mishap with a megabass Destroyer and warranty issues are making me want to stop doing business with them entirely. Wondering for a replacement who'd be the better replacement. A rod from St-croix or Gloomis? Would love to hear everyone's thoughts!
  4. First time quarry fishing and got my butt kicked today. Windy, cloudy, deep, clear (5-10’ vis), mostly rocky shoreline some moderate submerged grass/other vegetation near shore dropping off quickly into unknown depths. Spent some time fishing a deps slide swimmer and got some very nice smallies to show themselves (shore fishing only), got some follows, several at a time more than once, almost right to my feet, no takers though. Frustration ensued then I tossed around some jerks, a mojo rigged centipede , ned, spinner baits etc. nothing, nada, not a sniff or follow, only interest was in the glide bait. Can drop shot be effective fishing steep banks from shore? Finesse and smallie fishing in general is not my strong suit, going back tomorrow what would you do?
  5. Recently picked up one of the new model St Croix legend tournament spinning rods. The 8’6” MLXF Dropshot/Hair Jig rod. I paired it with a Shimano Sustain 4000XG spooled up with 10lb braid to 6lb tatsu leader. I’m excited to try it out dropshotting some fall smallies this weekend. My current dropshot rod is a 7’6 MLXF Avid, and I’ve really grown to like the extra length... I decided to push it even further with this new offering from St. Croix... will be interested to see if there’s a point of diminishing returns on rod length for this application. My first impressions are that it balances quite nicely with the 4000 size reel, but I think it would be too tip heavy with a smaller reel. Anyone had a chance to fish this rod yet? If so, what were your impressions? I’ll report back with more thoughts and a more thorough review if people are interested.
  6. A friend a fish with uses a dropshot with eagle claw steel leader and gets tangles is there something he can do to not get tangles without getting rid of the steel leader
  7. With most soft baits I notice that the main colors white, green pumpkin and black cover most to every situation. Ive fished shakey heads most of my life but now I'm branching out to drop shot more with the weather warming up, and finally able to buy a specialized rod/reel with my first pay raise. With dropshot I seem to always have luck on more translucent colors like smoke and watermelon seed. But I really havent fished the technique enough to know for certain. What are your top producing colors for clear, murky, and stained water?
  8. Hello and thanks for clicking on this. I've recently found a post for this very topic (posted back in 2013), but the thread didn't have near the detail I was hoping for. So that's why I'm here. I've gut hooked three of my last five catches, which means I must be doing something wrong. Two of them swallowed the hook point deep and I was not able to remove it. Those fish were bleeding quite a bit ? Based on the aforementioned thread, I'm guessing it's a bite detection issue. On all three of these fish, I didn't realize I had a fish until I started reeling to make my next cast. Here's how I'm working the rig: Cast out, let the weight and worm fall on slack line, close the bail and deadstick for about 15 seconds. Then, after reeling in a tiny bit of slack (if any at all), gently lift the rod tip to remove most of the slack. Set the rod tip back down, gently lift again, down again. I'll keep doing this, periodically deadsticking, until I'm confident there's no fish in that spot. All of this lifting and dropping occurs on a slack or slightly slack line. The first 7 or 8 fish I caught on the drop shot were all perfect hook sets, right in the lip. With those fish, I was lifting the rod tip far enough to remove all of the slack, sometimes even lifting the weight off the bottom just a tad. But, I noticed I was catching more fish by leaving some slack in the line. I think it makes for a more natural presentation. So I guess my question is: How much slack should I be leaving in the line when I'm working this rig?? My setup is: Spinning reel spooled with straight braid on a medium power, fast action rod. Size 1 or 1/0 Gamakatsu drop shot hook. 5" Zoom worm, nose hooked. 1/8 or 1/4 oz cylinder weight. Final note: I've only been fishing for about 4 months. I've tried Texas rigs, Carolina rigs, shaky heads, weightless plastics, pig and jigs, various crank baits, spinner baits, buzz baits, topwaters (frogs, poppers, jointed minnows, etc)... The ONLY rig I've landed fish on is the drop shot. It seems that every beginner has that one rig that works for them, and this one is mine. I really don't want to abandon it. I do however plan on switching to barbless hooks and learning the behind-the-gill hook removal technique. Thank you all for taking the time to read this very long post. Any feedback at all is greatly appreciated!
  9. Finally built the Eternity I picked up over a year ago. It's not nearly as powerful as I expected. To me, it falls more in the Lite/Fast spectrum than Medium/x-fast. It loads up pretty significantly when working a 3/8 weight. Much less powerful than my St. Croix 5S610MLXF. Feels more in line with my NFC DS610-IM. It fishes nice and is super light weight. Balances well when paired with the Vanquish. I need to put it on a scale because I think it may be the lightest rod I've ever built (excluding ice rods) Blank: Rainshadow ETES610MXF Guides: Fuji T2 SiC Hook Keeper: Kigan XLA (TiCh) Slip rings: American Tackle Cork: Natural (Custom Fly Grips) Inlay/accent cork: burnt and light (Andy Dear) Thread: Makoi charcoal without CP Winding checks: MudHole matte black. Butt cap: MudHole. Finish: Threadmaster Lite and Regular. Decals: Decal Connection Don't know where that holey cork ring came from. This was my personal stash of good stuff
  10. I am looking to buy a new spinning reel for around $100. I would put this reel on my dropshot rod. I want a reel that would have supper smooth drag just like my stradic but I cannot spend the money to buy another one. I was looking at the Shimano Nasci and the Diawa Fuago but I wasn't sure which one has smoother drag.

  12. I'm am looking to get into drop shotting. I will be buying a 6'9" ML/XF St.Croix avid spinning rod. I just need a reel to go with it. $200 is my max. What suggestions do you guys have?
  13. Still pretty cold here in Illinois so aside from a couple jig fish (mostly 1/4 oz with a zoom chunk jr, and a couple on a 3/8oz swim jig with a twin tail grub), the rest of my bites have been on a dropshot. I only fish small ponds from the bank. I've been forcing myself to use a baitcaster, regardless of presentation. Because of that, and the fact that it has been windy, I've upgraded my dropshot weight to 3/8 oz, although I'm still using finesse plastics (3" evolve vibra grub and 4" zman ez tube). questions (specifically about dropshotting from the bank) 1) Is there any benefit to using a lighter dropshot weight? the 3/8 oz weight has allowed me to cast farther and even directly into the wind. plus, it certainly makes it easier to feel the bottom and work the slack. 2) Doesn't the leader have to be quite a bit longer when your'e dropshotting from the bank? I mean I read about 4-6" leaders, but that's a completely different game when vertical fishing. from the bank, considering the angle of the line after you've cast it out say 20-30 yards, that 4-6" leader is going to leave your plastic like 1" off the bottom. I randomly chose to tie on a ~ 18" leader and that's been getting me bit when casting out to the center/deepest part of the pond.
  14. Hi everyone, Just started fishing at a new lake called Lake Chabot in the Oakland area and was wondering what you guys have had success on in that lake specifically or if you have any tips when fishing a new lake. It is a relatively large lake with deepish water in certain areas. Stocked with trout but has bass and catfish as well. Thanks for the help!
  15. A local golf course that I fish at is LOADED with big bass. After fishing this pond for a little while last spring, I noticed baitfish moving around. Upon further notice, I found a couple threadfin shad, that had been partially eaten by birds, laying on the bank. I had the idea of drop-shoting some of those shad that are typically used for catfishing just to see what would happen. It seemed to make sense because that is about as realistic as a dying shad suspending in the water. It started raining as I was trying this out and left without any answers. Has anyone ever tried this?
  16. I am torn between which of the G Loomis Drop shot rods to get. The mag-light, or the mag-medium? I am looking for a more all-around spinning rod, but I also want a rod that will work well for drop shot fishing. Any suggestions?
  17. Hola, I have not fished a dropshot before but have seen the results when dropshotting I was wondering what size hooks and weights work best Thanks, luke
  18. Im looking for a budget spinning rod for dropshotting (very sensitive). Under the $100 mark. Looking to get my dad a nice spinning rod for fathers day. Hes pretty much only used walmart rods and most of them broke lol. Any suggestions
  19. Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone here has tried using an UL for drop shotting purposes? I've got a 7' Daiwa Presso that I run 10lbs braid with a fluro leader on and I'm thinking of using this as a drop shotting rod as well. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
  20. Does anyone have any experience dropshotting the Yum Killshot? It seems similar to the Anglers choice killshot (name theft even!) And the kvd dream shot with just a smaller, more subtle profile. One plus for the Yum is I can get it at my local gander mountain. I like the look of the Anglers choice but it'd be an online buy only...
  21. Just wondering if anyone else has tried these out. I love them only hook i use for drop shot. I have been using them for years with great succes but there hard to find in stores. Ive only been able to order them online. Whats other hooks do you use ?
  22. Any recommendations for a drop shot bait for very clear water? I think I'm going to try the bento minnow, any other baits though? What size hooks?
  23. Hey guys, thanks in advance for your input. I have a 7' M-F Micro magic pro that I use for my finesse fishing. I enjoy it a lot, light and sensitive. I use it for shaky heads, wacky rig senkos, dropshotting, etc.. I recently purchased some Izorline XXX in 20b test (broke above 27lb) for my MH rod. I really like it strong, low stretch, and decent abrasion resistance had a few pike bite my lipless crank. Tooth marks but still had my lure. Here's my question, I started looking into finesse jigs. About 5/16oz with a light wire hook. I want to use izorline xxx in about 10lb. Would this line be good for finesse jigs but still be good for certain finesse applications that focus on presentation like a drop shot? Maybe 8lb? I would like to attempt both with the same setup. What do you guys use for finesse jigs?
  24. Hey guys! I just wanted to know what your favorite bait to throw for smallmouth out on Lake Erie and the great lake!
