  1. Hey all, I’m located out in the far west-end if Henrico County in central Virginia and am getting sick of seeing “no fishing” and “residences and their guests only” posted at what seems like virtually every pond/lake I’ve found on google. I understand this area is well developed but not too familiar with the waters around the area and am trying to get into fishing with the quarantine and this free time but it’s super discouraging not being able to properly fish. I’m aware of public parks like Crump and Deep Run Park but they’re so flooded with other fishers that regardless of worms, jigs, and other baits I can’t even get nibbles. Anyone out there with some advice on less populated/visited ponds/lakes within about a 25 mile radius or so of the Short Pump area? I’m currently restrained to bank fishing only but have been getting closer and closer to buying a kayak since I’m seeing them on sale closer to $150-175 but don’t want to purchase if not necessary/no place to use it. I’m willing to travel probably 30-45 minutes, maybe further if the fishing is good. I’m not looking for an absolute gold mine but I’ve resorted to walking wider creeks cause I can’t find places with public access. I’ve only ever caught Bass and catfish but would love to expand past to other fish as well but have zero knowledge on any of that or friends with knowledge on them either.
  2. Does anybody know of a good recipe for hot dogs as bait for channel catfish? I've heard to use jello, garlic powder, etc. I need something that will keep the bait on the circle hook. I'm going fishing for channel cats tomorrow, but in the past, the piece of hot dog flies off when I cast... Thanks in advance.
  3. Today I was at Berkeley Lake, mainly going for carp and catfish but I was struck with more of a mystery and lots of confusion. I used specifically corn, brined shad and a bratwurst. I know carp can be surprisingly very smart fish so I'm a little less surprised that the corn kept getting stolen but it was still a bummer The shad didn't work at all but that's what I get for using store bought Walmart bait. Then there is the brat. Strangely enough it got the most action but was also stolen at the end. I feel the hook wasn't big enough but I'm still utterly confused. I did a little bass and trout fishing but came up empty as I was a tad too lazy to switch out baits at a frequent rate but it was still bothersome to get no reaction. I know that's on me. Being knee to this as a whole and mostly relying on others to help me fish, what are somethings I can do to make things more self reliant?
  4. Hello BR, I just came back from Boy Scout summer camp which I was in for a week and I got a couple chances to go fishing and caught a 3.4lb LMB bass and a 4.5lb LMB bass which was my PB LMB this year! I just got back from fishing for 3 hours at The Nashua River and was wondering if anyone knows what fish couple be blowing up like crazy on the surface. I'm pretty sure they are pickerel but, to my next question is if anyone knows a good carp rig and bait for carp in the river? Thanks, Martin S
  5. Hey BR, I’m from Lake Harding Alabama, and I’m stuck in one fishing spot, due to my mode of transportation being closeminded to new spots. I’m a bank fisherman, and I don’t catch fish often. I try worms, fake worms, fish, fake fish, and mannnny other types of lures, baits etc. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, or if it’s just my spot. I fish in a cove, right next to a boat ramp on a fishing pier. Any species bigger than two pounds works. Help?
  6. Hey there guys, I joined back in 2015 but never introduced myself or even replied to any posts. I am a fisherman out of the Richmond, Va area. I focus on fishing for bass and for every species on the James river. I have been fishing since I was very young, mostly surf fishing in the outer banks and Carolina beaches for red drum, flounder, etc... Moved to Florida when I was a teenager and we had a great pond in our neighborhood that got me into bass fishing. I can recall fishing there daily with worms, lizards, pretty much anything that was included in the box of artificals. We pulled out some great bass from there and some huge catfish as well. Moved back to NC and did some brackish water fishing with bait for awhile. Then finally, I moved to Richmond at the age of 20. I started fishing again around age 21 and have been hooked since. Get it? Anyway I love this forum and will try and post some pictures of some great catches and info I have acquired by fishing around the Richmond area. I also do a lot of Kayak fishing. I hope this post reaches the Virginia forums, and if anyone ever wants to do some urban angling message me!
  7. I'll be in Indianapolis this Fri/Sat at the Convention Center, coming from San Clemente, California. I'll have 3-4 hours to go fish somewhere, including travel time. Where can I go that is nearby (within 20-45 minutes drive in an Uber or BlueIndy)? I'll have an Okuma travel rod & plastics. Any kind of fishing. If it's something I won't find elsewhere, even better. But really anywhere I can get a fish to bite, except pet stores :). If there's a tackle shop I should stop at for the appropriate local jig or bait, that would be great too. Also any advice for fishing in the cold. I'll have a heavy jacket and gloves. Thanks!
  8. Purchased myself a PENN Spinfisher V 4500ll back last year and have now made it my stripe setup and now I'm looking to grab a big game/catfish setup. I mainly fish my local river beside our dam. Power company allows us to fish down there and you can pretty much walk right up to the bottom of the dam and cast out. Seen some pretty huge catfish get pulled from there. Was thinking about picking up a Shimano Tekota 600 and pair it with an Okuma Battlecat rod and some 65# power pro line. Then I got to looking at the Ambassadeur 7000 series reels. This will most likely become one of my main bait setups as the PENN setup will mainly be a lure setup for stripe. But in the rare event, I travel back down to FL to fish like I use to a lot, I want something that will be able to handle decent size fish if I ever happen to hook one. Just looking at opinions. Appreciate it in advance.
  9. Hey All, Currently I have the following setups that I like to fish for bass and panfish with: St. Croix Premier Casting 7' MF / Shimano Metanium MGL St. Croix Avid X 7' MLF / Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 2500 I would like to target catfish in the near future and have a couple of questions regarding what I would have to purchase to do so. I know that I am not going to want to be using a heavy bait setup with the current spinning gear that I have (3oz weight on a modified carolina rigs). Am I able to stick with just upgrading my spinning rod to a MHF and pairing it with my Stradic? Will the reel be able to handle what I am trying to catch? It may sound like a silly question but I just want some second opinions to make sure that I am not going to break my setup and to reassure I'm not being overly dramatic. Do you guys have any recommendations for a good affordable rod to get the job done? I am thinking around $100 but I am open for all options.
  10. I like to fish for bullhead catfish, but I gut hook alot of them. I have tried 1/0 circle hooks, but I can't seem to hook the fish (I think the hook is too big). So I was wondering if I could take a size 2 or a size 4 bait holder hook and bend it into a circle hook. The bullheads aren't that big, maybe a half pound at best.
  11. I'm new here. Also recently got back into fishing and I love it. Too much my girlfriend says...lol. Being summertime and all she can't take the heat much anymore, so I'm looking for a friend in the Rapides Parish, Louisiana area to go fishing with as often as possible. I work M-F from 8am til 4:30pm and I can go pretty much any time after that and on weekends as well. Anybody interested please give me a shout and hopefully we can get together. I'm new to bass fishing and nowhere near a pro. Can't get good at it if I don't get to practice. Also would like to know where some good bank fishing is around here? No boat access.

  14. Hi there, I am a college student who attends the University of Indianapolis and am unfamiliar with the area because i am from MI. I have a rowboat, and am looking for any lakes, channels, bodies of water, etc. that are great fishing spots for my rowboat. I mainly fish for panfish, but love catching catfish, and bass. I am willing to drive up to 30 minutes for a great spot around the Indianapolis area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  15. has anyone had or used the pro cat round reel combo from acadmey? theyre really cheap, 60 bucks, and they sound good for that price but we all know you get what you pay for. it doesnt have a great line capacity, 130 yds of 20 pound mono, but ill be using 50 pound braid and 12 pound mono for backing. they also have pro cat braided line, 8 bucks a spool for 150 yds. i did the math and i can fill the spool with 44 yds of backing and stll have 150 yds of braid, which worls for me because 90% if the time im fishing close to cover and wenching flathead out from log jams. has a 20 pound max drag and baitclicker. sounds good to me, but if yall have anything negative to say id love to hear because i could save the money i would drop on a couple of these combos and buy something better.

  17. looking for multi purpose set up although mainly for big catfish i would also like to have the line capacity and max drag to fish off of the jetties and beaches without a boat. i want something (both spinning and baitcast) that can hold a good amount of 30 pound braid (300 yds at least) and around 20 pounds of drag. i was looking at some abu garcia ambassadeurs but im kind of dissapointed in their max drags (11 to 15 pounds?). dont get me wrong, thats all fine and dandy in open water but most of the time im pulling good size flatheads in and i want to get them up and out of cover as fast as possible so that 20 pound drag is pretty important. as far as spinning reels i think ill probably go with a penn fierce 5 or 6 size, although ive heard they have graphite rotors so im not sure how that would effect the life of the reel.
  18. So i have just moved to the Pembroke Pines area of south florida from England and have picked up a rod again. I have a lake at the back of my house and can see peacock bass swimming about, sailfin catfish and a few other species i can't identify yet. I have fished there all times of day, first using a texas rig with power bait lures, and the fish just ignored it as i could see them in the water, i then started using a carolina rig with all kinds of different bait ( hot dogs, molded bait, sweetcorn...), float fishing with all kinds of bait, crank baits and spinner jigs. The fish just seem to ignore it and I'm a little lost on what my next move should be. I also went to Wolf lake park in Davie, FL today and had no luck. I was using a texas rig and then carolina rig again with worm lures. Any one been here and has any tips? Thanks
  19. Hey my name is christopher i live in clarksville TN and i am looking for friends or any serious fishing partners i used to live in NC but moved here recently and i am looking for someone to fish with! Im okay with fishing by myself but i would also like to have someone to go over night catfishing or day time fishing in general. I just need people that i can get ahold of to ask if they want to go fishing haha.
  20. A buddy I met from another forum, who is a big time blue cat guy caught the NC state record Sunday morning. Unfortunately he couldn't find anywhere that was open with a certified scale so he kept this 91lb catfish alive overnight and hung out until this morning to get it certified. Gets his pics with the beautiful fish, gets it recorded, a biologist comes out and witnessed the fish, and Zakk released it back into the lake. He continues to go back out and BEATS his own record an hour after it had been set! 105 lbr! I thought it was a really cool story, and this guy fishes HARD!! Very much deserved. So much respect for Zakk https://www.facebook.com/zakk.royce/posts/999934143379316?fref=nf&pnref=story.unseen-section
  21. Hello fishing peers, You can call me Regi or Jr.I go to college in Greensboro, NC.My mother stays in Riverdale,GA which is a little suburb. My dad stays in Goose Creek, SC.I am also from Gainesville, FL. I spend my time kind of split between these areas, especially the city areas. My dad was military so I've got to fish some good areas in the south. He started me fishing at the age of 2 and recently turned 21.I'm on my own now so I am still learning.I joined this site to soak up and learn knowledge/tips from you guys! I was wondering do guys in any of these locations know of fishing spots in these areas or around them.In GA,I've found a couple of spots in Fayette,Clayton, and Henry county since those areas are as far as I usually go.Atlanta has been hard for me to find spots since staying with my mom during college breaks in a city.In SC, I tend to mostly be in Goose Creek,Charleston,Walterboro area because of family. In NC, I've fished the Greensboro,Burlington,Fayetteville, and Jacksonville areas.Burlington I have had a lot of success. In FL,I know a lot of places in Gainesville,Williston,Chiefland,Bronson,Jacksonville.I mostly be in Gainesville or Williston in Florida due to family also.Fishing is a real passion of mine, hopefully I can share information and locations with you guys and vice versa. I apologize for this long post and I will try to learn the ins and outs of the forum.
  22. Just wanted to see if anybody had an opinion on this reel and if it is any good.
  23. Hey all! I've been fishing in my community lake "Gold Key" and went a little deeper (really not that deep) with my rattle worm, it was the evening and something grabbed my line. At first I thought I was caught on something so I wiggled around and gave the line some slack, something was down there and it wouldn't come up. It went under my kayak and moved me around a bit. My pole was bent. I know for a fact that we have snapping turtles in the lake and some are huge, I also know that we have catfish, bass, walleye and other "little" fish. My question, Wouldn't a snapper swim around or just bite the lure off? I fought this thing for quite some time and it never came close enough to the top of the water to where I could see what it was. Ended up breaking my line and taking my rattle worm. I had the movie Jaws going through my head the whole time! LOL. I know we don't stock the lake with Muskie (sp)? but you never know what some people will do.
  24. Ok so i am planning on catching some freshwater catfish soon for the first time. I know the barbels are harmless but i do know they have sharp spines on their dorsal and pectroal fins. I know for a fact the saltwater catfish here sting with those spines but i dont know about freshwater catfish. So my question is what species of freshwater cats sting and how can i handle them without getting stung?
