  1. Today I was at Berkeley Lake, mainly going for carp and catfish but I was struck with more of a mystery and lots of confusion. I used specifically corn, brined shad and a bratwurst. I know carp can be surprisingly very smart fish so I'm a little less surprised that the corn kept getting stolen but it was still a bummer The shad didn't work at all but that's what I get for using store bought Walmart bait. Then there is the brat. Strangely enough it got the most action but was also stolen at the end. I feel the hook wasn't big enough but I'm still utterly confused. I did a little bass and trout fishing but came up empty as I was a tad too lazy to switch out baits at a frequent rate but it was still bothersome to get no reaction. I know that's on me. Being knee to this as a whole and mostly relying on others to help me fish, what are somethings I can do to make things more self reliant?
  2. A local pond by me that's about an acre in a square shape has almost no bass bigger than really 6 inches. There's just about every species of bait fish (bluegill and rock bass in large numbers and perch and crappie in much smaller numbers) and carp that jump all over the pond, most likely all coming from the river very close by. The bottom is rocky with some weed patches and structure and seems to get semi deep although I can't really tell. The problem here is when fishing (most often fly fishing around the shore), there are tiny to medium bluegill, small to big rock bass, and the bass (3:1 smallmouth:largemouth) are all around 6 inches and just as big as the bait fish. It seems like the masses of bait fish that hide in the weeds around the shore should be amazing bait for big bass but as far as I know there's only been one 2 pound smallie my friend caught right as a rooster tail hit the surface. It just seems so confusing to me. Are there way too many bait fish and rock bass that compete with the little bass keeping them small (they almost always have fat stomachs even being so small) and how would one fix that? Thank you for your help.
  3. Hey BR, I have been seeing some MASSIVE carp schooling on the river while I have been fishing for smallmouth. I decided to bring a saltwater spinning setup that has 40lb braid on it, I added a 1/2 oz weight and a swivel, then I tied a 2 foot 30lb braid "leader". I used a small size 8 hook with some fake floating corn attached to the tag line which was wrapped around the hook. I saw a carp and tried to cast near it... it instantly spooked... So how can I "sight fish" for carp??
  4. Hello BR, I just came back from Boy Scout summer camp which I was in for a week and I got a couple chances to go fishing and caught a 3.4lb LMB bass and a 4.5lb LMB bass which was my PB LMB this year! I just got back from fishing for 3 hours at The Nashua River and was wondering if anyone knows what fish couple be blowing up like crazy on the surface. I'm pretty sure they are pickerel but, to my next question is if anyone knows a good carp rig and bait for carp in the river? Thanks, Martin S
  5. What carp bait works in the US the best? People say that boiles don't work here as they do in Europe. I tried sweet corn but it doesn't work. Also, I tried dough bait with strawberry jello and it didn't work as well. The only bait that works well is quick greats+white bread+creamed corn. If you know other carp bait and it's known to be working please share it here.
  6. Does anyone have any advice on how to target these fish with a rod and reel? I have researched until my eyes bled without finding anything of substance. Anything would be greatly appreciated.
  7. I was just killing time here at home and stumbled across a video on catching Asian Carp. Being towed behind a boat clubbing or chopping with a sword seems kind or pointless. I saw an old timer catching the big carp on a cane pole. He was having a ball and I thought it was some what silly to have a rope attached to his cane pole and then tied to a tree. He pulled in a 26.5 pounder! After he re-baited and flipped his line out I don't think the bait had even settled to the bottom and his cane pole arced like he was pulling out a car engine. This one was 48 pounds! I watched him fight it for about an hour and half. When he finally got the fish up on the bank the cane pole was wrecked and had to bring it up hand over hand. Talked with him for a while and shared fishing stories and a beer or two and he told me what he was using for bait. Strawberry jello, Franken berry cereal, a can of sweet corn and Big Red soft drink. After seeing the fight that carp put up I want to go and try rod and reels. I have salt water gear I have not used since I moved to Kentucky and with fresh line, reel cleaning and lubrication it should work out just fine. Will I eat them, I don't know I will have to try a small piece properly cooked before I make my mind up about that. Call me Carp Buster.

  9. Hey everyone, I started bass fishing in OC parks a few months ago and am so hooked I fish about 4 times a week. Caught a 8-10lb carp yesterday around 5PM off the south dock of Bonelli park, Puddingstone Lake with sweet corn on size 12 gold treble hook. Wanted to share this info with everyone. Johnny
  10. Decided to head out for 3-4 hours this morning for some casual pre-work fishing on a lake I've never been to before. I live in Minnesota so I'm blessed with the ability to visit tons of new lakes every season. It would take a long time to cover them all! However, along with that blessing comes a curse. Small Bass. My PB is 4lb 11oz and that's a seriously seriously quality fish for Central Minnesota. Got to the lake and, of course, it's filled with carp like all the lakes in the St. Cloud area. I find that if there are carp in a bay, the bite is tough in that bay. Does anyone have any experience fishing carp-heavy lakes? Please let me know your findings or techniques for those lakes! Anyway. It was a successful 3.5 hours because I caught a lot of really healthy really quality bass. Tried a few baits but the only thing they wanted was a wacky worm. Water temp was 72.9 degrees with overcast and windy/sprinkling rain conditions. I stayed in 3 foot or less of water, fished the wacky rig along docks and reeds and smoked 'em this morning! Oh and I got a respectable (ballsy) Sunny to grab my worm as well. He nailed it like a bass. I'm finding that the only way to catch bass in Central Minnesota where the lakes are pressured SUPER HARD every day is with the wacky rig. Seriously. It's the only set-up I can reliably catch fish on. Disclaimer: These were all taken with my front-facing camera. I was solo this morning and had no cameraman. Sorry the pics are sideways, but for some reason the internet wants to register them this way.
  11. Wow! I can only guess what it takes to land fish like this! http://www.anglersmail.co.uk/news/world-carp-record-rises-to-105-lb-56992
  12. What a great fishing was today! I had 3 catfish, a few bluegills, 2 largemouth bass, and the price of the day 14 lbs carp! P.S. I wish I had a better selfie.
  13. Today I caught three 12 lbs carp. This is my first carp I have ever caught within the US! I'm so excited! I used Multi Rig with creamed corn+quick greets+white bread. Used the same bait to chumm the area about 20-30 min prior to fishing.
  14. I have two cheap chinese so called bite alarms. They are only good for shark fishing because normal size fish can't trigger the alarm. Even cat fish couldn't. So, I'm think of creating a simple carp bite alarm. I stuck on the sensor part. What would you recommend? PC mice rotary encoder is not good for this. To use a reed sensor the cercuit needs to be modified, which I don't want to mess with. Any other ideas? Thanks.
  15. Does anyone know anything about carp fishing seasons on the East Coast? When is prespawn, spawning period, post spawning, best fishing time of the year. I had three fishing trips to a local ponds, seen carp jumping but didn't get it to bite. Any suggestions? I used dough ball with strawberry jello, sweet potato, bread. Nothing worked so far. May be it's still to cold? Thanks.
  16. There is a small pond, maybe 30ft by 15ft and 5-10ft deep, near my house. I have seen and caught sunfish, bass (0-1 lb ish, mostly on the lower end), goldfish (probably some kids pet), crawfish, and shad. what i want to know is what are the best lures and rod/reel set up to catch all of them. I typically take my entire tackle box, but i would rather only take a few lures and one rod, and suggestions?
  17. Ok guys, I am here to pick your brains a little, I have a little comp in two days, it’s at my local dam which is been very tough lately due to the water level being so low, at the moment there is no reeds/ vegetation on the banks for the Fish to hold to so its deep fishing. However this week we have had some of another species of fish spawning, ‘ Carp’ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carp )not something I believe you get in the USA. I don’t know that much about them myself, but with the eggs just hatching I would imagine they are schooling, and they wouldn’t really be sticking to any trees more just open banks, not places I usually fish for bass due to the lack of structure. So here is what I am asking, I want to take a technique to try and mimic these fish as the bass will be feeding on them. I have attached a picture of what they look like, In my mind running a White and Gold Fluke on a Carolina rig, or a X-Rap Jerkbait off the banks till quite deep. How else could I tackle this, there is a very limited window in which these fish spawn, which falls right on my comp, and I feel this is something I need to take advantage on. Hopefully I’ll be able to link a report back about this if it works out. ( Again I am a Member from South Africa if you are puzzling what I am asking about) Regards Ross (Fish in the picture caught by a friend Tjaart - After many hours of trying!)
  18. Does anyone know of some good places to fish in northern Virginia(up next to the Maryland border.) Any help would be appreciated:) Also if you know any spots to fish the major rivers like the Potomac or such. I'd be looking for carp, bass, pike, or catfish. I don't have a boat either.
  19. Hey Everyone, Wanted to get some feedback from people in the Lake of The Ozarks area about bowfishing. Anyone having any luck? What rigs are people using? I found out that the impoundments on Fort Leonard Wood are off limits to bowfishing and that is ashame because there are some hogs rolling around in the ponds and lakes. Been seeing some nice gar on the Big Piney. Thanks, Brad
  20. I made a small little fly thing out of some wood the other day, and recently I have been testing it out on the local ponds for grass carp. It is so fun watching the slow, but exciting chase then the bite off the surface, and hearing the drag scream when they make 30 yard runs. I will be getting a fly reel very soon to use regular dry flies, but I can't cast them on ultra-light gear so i just made one out of wood. I have caught a few on it already, all under 15 lbs, but a pond less than a mile from my house is packed with 30-40 lb giants. I havent gone there yet cause the place where they all hang out is too far to cast the little wooden fly (20 - 30 ft). Can't wait to catch some giants on a fly reel. Anyone else here fly-fish for grass carp?
  21. What is best lure for carp
  22. Ive been exploring lots of ponds around my way. Some of them really nice and extremely bassy looking. Huge trees laying on the bank that go out like 50 feet into the water, tons of structure. But in all these ponds I have yet to see or catch a bass but i constantly see HUGE Carp. Not sure which kind but theyre giangantic. Do these Carp have an effect on the bass population? It insane how much of a bass haven some of these ponds are but i cant find bass. Help! Tips on fishing pond would be appreciated as well!
  23. I just moved to winter haven with my tackle for a couple months and I would like to team up with someone to target some big freshwater fish like carp, catfish, and gar, and maybe Big Bass too. I havent had much luck trying different lakes on my own!
  24. Hello all! I have been bitten by the bass bug as recently as a week ago! I just got back into fishing maybe a year ago. I am 28 years old and fished as a youngin’ in Virginia. I have been here in Delaware for 16 years, not much in ways of large lakes around me but we do have some smaller river access and ponds, also that thing called the Atlantic Ocean! I try to go fishing with a buddy at least once a week (I can’t get out every day like he does) we fish mostly Lums Pond, targeting carp but happy with whatever hooks up. Looking forward to pouring over this website and learning a lot!
