  1. I'm somewhat new to fishing with a boat. (I started last year.) Do we have a resource for the fundamentals of using a bass boat? A know it's a big subject, but this would be a helpful video series. Also, Does anyone have any "books" they recommend I read, on the subject? I wanted to post this, as I think this would be helpful to others too. I know this is a "big" question, and could be broken into smaller, more specific questions. The high-level view is helpful, for beginners, so they have a starting place to dig deeper.
  2. A few years back I purchased an older model G3 18ft aluminum bass boat with a 2001 Yamaha 115 V4. Motor has been completely rebuilt from top to bottom. The G3 has been good, but a few months back I had issues with the console. The guy I bought the boat from was a BIG guy, and apparently he used the steering wheel to pull himself out of the seat every time he stood up, so the console had a stress crack under the steering wheel. A buddy and I were taking off for a tournament and I went over another boats wake and when my boat came down the steering wheel fell out of the console and landed between my feet on the floor of my boat. Scary situation, but no one was hurt and we were able to get it back on the trailer. Never had a chance to work on it bc of work, and I’ve decided to just replace the boat. Going to keep the old Yammy… it runs like a top and I spent all that money getting it rebuilt so I’m gonna get my moneys worth out it. Any suggestions on brands to check out???? I have my eyes on having a GatorTrax custom built, but I’m still browsing looking for options.
  3. Hey all, I have a 14 ft jon boat and I need a fishing partner. I usually fish Lake Underhill or Winter Park chain but occasionally find myself on Conway or in lake county. Im tired of fishing alone. Hit me up if you want to get out on the water.
  4. How sacrilegious is it to put a downrigger on a bass boat?
  5. I picked up a used pelican bass raider 10e for free. I assume they did not want money for it because the foam on the inside is waterlogged. I am going to attempt to separate the two halves and remove the foam and plywood. I will replace the plywood but am unsure if I can get an exact replacement for the styrofoam. I can install a different type of closed cell foam. I am also assuming that the foam does not add any type of structural support internally. Has anyone attempted this with this boat? Any advice?
  6. Hey all, I’m in the market for a smaller fishing kayak. Right now I have a kayak that’s around 100lbs and definitely takes me and a buddy to lug it around. I don’t stand much when I’m out on the water so I don’t need to be able to stand much. However, I would like it to be stable so if I sway side to side on it or lean to one side in the water trying to grab a fish, it won’t roll and will be sturdy. Anything under 12ft is what I’m targeting, light and fast in open water. Also will be using a 3.5lb anchor if that makes any difference. One I have been looking at is the Brooklyn kayak fk285. It is only 9 feet 2 inches which for some reason scares me. But I’m intrigued by the hatch right in front of the seat and the 3 rod holders with one being adjustable right in front of you. Don’t need any hook ups for fish finder or anything either. Just some rod holders and storage are fine with me Any suggestions?
  7. I have a 2014 Stratus 186 VLO which is supposed to weigh 2,720lbs. I am looking at getting a van which can tow apprx. 3,500lbs. Normally when I am fishing it's just me, my empty truck, and a friend, so add apprx. 300-400lbs. and gear for people which would take that 3,500lbs. down to 3,000-3,100lbs. and I should be safe by apprx. 380-480lbs. Now that's just for a quick 20 minute trip to the lake that is flat and dry. If I was loading up the family and going on a trip I would easily exceed that weight. I would love to keep a truck but a minivan seems to be the way we are headed with a family, my wife drives a car. In an earlier post someone said to get my vehicle weighed at a feed lot or truck scale. I don't think I have too many of either around me. I am near the Forest Lake, Minnesota area. Where could I go to get my boat and trailer weighed and how much would it cost?
  8. I have recently bought a 10ft plastic boat. I got it for extremely cheap and when I got home I discovered duct tape on the front. The hole is very small and seems possible to fix but I have no experience in this topic. I attached a photo of the damage. What would be my best bet in fixing this if it’s possible. I have some marine hoop laying around and have also gotten advice to bondo it.. would either of these work or is there something else to try? Any help would be appreciated, thanks
  9. Hello everyone, I'm a first time boat owner and I have to buy a new trolling motor for my boat. Is it possible to buy a trolling motor with the "Spot Lock" ability without having to dump another $3 grand on an Ultrex? The company/ brand isn't that important to me... I just want to know what kind of trolling motor models are out there that can do the spot lock thing, and those that are perhaps cheaper (ie Motor Guide). I know the Ultrex does, Im pretty sure theres a "power drive 2" from minn kota does as well but that also seems top of the line... What about a Fortrex? Can a minn kota edge do spot lock? Thanks for clarifying
  10. Hey all. I’ve been fishing for some time now with my Jon boat and a trailer. I’m getting sick of having to have a designated spot just to fish because of the bigger boat and the trailer process. I want to invest in a good fishing kayak. I’ve fished on a kayak before and I really like how easy it was to move around. So my question is what’s the best all around fishing kayak under $1,000? If possible to get some loaded ones like ones with included rod holders or track systems. I’m not too knowledgeable about how to add accessories and such. What kayak would you recommend? Also I heard many pros about adding a trolling motor to your kayak and many cons to it as well. What are y’all suggestions? Hoping to get more of lighter weight one! Thanks for taking the time to answer!
  11. It's known that a brand new car loses approximately 20% of it's value as soon as you drive it off of the lot. I'm wondering if it is the same for boats. Does a brand new boat drop value immediately like a new car does? And if so, what is the percentage?
  12. Foot pedal troller was running fine all day pulled it up to move spots and when I went to use it again I didn’t have any thrusting power. I can hear a relay clicking when I go to power it but the prop isn’t spinning. Weird thing is that I can still move the shaft side to side with the pedal. The prop spins freely by hand which leads me to believe there isn’t any line tangled in there. I’ve tried toying with the wires while it’s on auto thrust and still no luck. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
  13. What's up, I have been thinking about buying a kayak ($1,000-$2,000). I am curious If there are any websites/stores to purchase old or used kayaks. I know some stores carry previous year model kayaks and sell them for a bargain, but I am having a hard time finding them. Is there a website? I know Facebook market place has them, but I really could use y'alls help. Appreciate it, AJK
  14. I have been looking for a used boat for months in the Midwest. I have been on craigslist, FB marketplace, ebay, dealer websites and everything else I can think of on nearly a daily basis. I cannot seem to find a boat within my price range that does not get sold in a day or is less than 500+ miles away. Does anyone know of any other ways of finding for sale by owner boats for sale? What I am looking for, should be the standard bass boat that is for sale but has been a huge process to get one located. (Fiberglass, 150 HP, 18-20 ft, 2000 and newer and under 20K). I need to get one purchased asap. Any info would be much appreciated.
  15. I have a 1986 ranger 375v love the boat mostly everything still works! But I can’t remember since I’ve had the boat if I ever tested the kill switch lanyard and today while out on the water I pulled it to test it and the motor did not cut off. What could be the cause and where should I start?
  16. I have a plastic boat that has a fairly small hole in the hull. I’ve heard that epoxy is a good idea with plastic kayaks but on the boat, I only have access to one side of the hole. I can see the hole from the outside, but on the inside of the boat there’s an extra plastic mold that completely blocks you from seeing the hole. Is an epoxy still possible if I can’t get to both sides? If it’s not, what are my best options here? Any advice would be helpful.
  17. Im pretty much a beginner with this stuff, so excuse me if I don't know much about what im talking about. I have a 10 ft boat, and now I have to figure out its primary means of propulsion. I already own a transom mounted trolling motor with 36 lbs trust and am trying to figure out if I could get away with that as the primary motor. The boat is very light and even fully loaded with 2 people shouldn't push past 500 lbs. Any input would be very appreciated.
  18. Hi all, first time poster! what a great group on here, it’s been tremendously helpful so far. I’ve recently decided to purchase a predator 103 after whiffing on a few 14 footers and sun dolphin pro. I’m in the process of making a checklist so we are ready to go. Looking for recs on a fish finder, battery, on board charger and any other essentials! For the fish finder what is the recommended way to hook a transducer on a small plastic boat? Thanks in advance!
  19. looking for a small boat for my pond. Interested in the Bass Hunter boats EX 120. Does anyone know if they hold water along the sides and in cup holder. I want to keep it out on my pond tied to pier, but not sure if it is a pain every time it rains? I see the bottom has a drain but curious about the sides? Any clue if that is an issue?
  20. Hey bassresource gang how's it going? I need help. I'm trying to figure out which boat I should buy to take my boys out with but not too familiar with all the brands to be honest but I think I've found some good ones and I'd like someone's opinion on which boat to buy. 22. I was just wondering what is y'all fishing vehicles. I personnally use an old Jeep Liberty 2003. It has a ceiling rod rack and a load bar to help load my kayak on the roof rack. I put A/T tires as I often fish back country... It is also has a hitch so I can pull my yak trailer or the 12ft aluminium boat. What about yours ?
  23. So, I've had a few threads on here about getting a tow vehicle for my Stratus 186VLO. I'd love to get a pickup truck but it's just not in the cards right now. I looked at minivans but the max towing capacity is 3,000-3,500lbs. I have looked at the Subaru Ascent SUV which has a max towing capacity of 5,000lbs. I was able to get my fully loaded boat and trailer weighed today. It weighed 2,960lbs. I was told that when vehicle says max towing capacity they are also including the weight of passengers and gear in the vehicle also and not just the boat and trailer. So, if my fully loaded boat and trailer weigh 2,960lbs. and I add 2 adults, say, 400lbs. that makes it 3,360lbs. for my boat, trailer, people, and gear. If the Subaru Ascent's max towing capacity is 5,000lbs. that leaves a cushion of 1,640lbs. Would this be enough of a cushion? I know that your not supposed to tow anywhere near what the max said and that how much you tow affects your vehicle's ability to drive safely. So, what is the cushion from your max weight and the vehicle's max tow weight, 1,000lbs., 2,000lbs, 4,000lbs.......what is should it be?
  24. Looking into a 16’-17’ aluminum bass boat... any thoughts? I’ve looked into almost all the manufacturers. Just looking for some opinions. I personally like the Xpress, but I’m also a fan of the Triton and love the value of the Tracker. Any insight would be appreciated.
  25. I'm a fairly new boat owner two years to be exact I'm learning as I go along, lately I noticed I'm taking in water and using my bilge pump to take it out.My question is at drain hole of the hull should there be a plastic gasket or rubber gasket in that tube? The drain plug fits perfect but I think there was some type of gasket there before, could that missing gasket cause me to take in water even though drain plug fits securely? Thanks guys!!
