  1. So I just got a baitcasting setup and I'm a pretty casual fisherman so I have no clue what I'm doing. I've read all the articles and such and adjusted my spool tension to match my bait(I throw mostly senkos which are about 3/8 oz). I have my brakes around 7-9 out of 9 total brakes. However, even with smooth motions I still end up backlashing when I do overhead casts, and it is often mid cast even though I'm thumbing the spool and making it stop before it hits the water. Any tips on how to fix this? Also, using the measure distance tool on google maps, I estimated that in general I'm only casting around 25 yards tops(usually around 20-25 yds). And I've heard that most people can throw most lures around 30-40 yards. Casting distance is needed for me since I fish from the shore on ponds and some areas are inaccessible on foot. On my spinning setup which is just a 50$ combo from bass pro I can cast around 30 yds pretty easily. And I thought that baitcasters in general cast further than spinning rods. As for my equipment, I didn't buy anything super expensive since I'm just a casual fisherman. Rod- *** Fate Chrome 7'1" Medium power Extra fast action. Lure weight 1/4oz to 3/4oz or something like that Reel- KastKing assassin (I heard good reviews about this reel) Line- Powerpro super 8 slick 20lb braid.
  2. Hey guys, so I just got a 13 fishing baitcaster it is the concept A3. I have it on a Favorite fishing 7’2 casting rod. Yesterday I was out wading on the river jigging, no problems at all worked like a dream. Today was much different, I would backlash about every other cast. It was mid cast, almost like my bait would stop in mid-air and then I’d get a horrible backlash. I run 20lb braid with a 12lb mono leader, not sure if that will help you guys at all. Please give me all of your recommendations, I’d like to get this fixed because it was my favorite casting combo yet. Thanks!!
  3. My buddy has a Daiwa T3 Ballistic 100h baitcast reel and it is impossible to cast without backlashing it. Brakes are turned all the way up and it backlashes. I tried taking the side plate off and it was very greasy/oily on the braking components, so I cleaned it off with rubbing alcohol and it casted fine for 2 casts and then backlashed horribly again. I repeated those steps about 3 times and then I ran out of line. It's not just a little nest either. It normally ruins the whole spool of line. I am very familiar with baitcast reels, as is he. We fish them multiple times a week, so its not like we don't know how to cast. We both have Lew's, *** and BPS reels. I have no idea where the oil would be coming from or if it has anything to do with it. I recently took the whole sideplate and spool and soaked it in rubbing alcohol. Same results. If anyone experienced this or has a suggested fix, please let me know.
  4. So I've started using fluorocarbon line on one of my baitcasters for crankbaits, but I keep getting backlashes are almost impossible to get out. Should I set my brakes a certain way.PLEASE HELP.
  5. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8K2YC2W Please take this survey, it is for my engineering 4 class in high school. I am working on manufacturing an optimized baitcasting reel.
  6. Today I went fishing with my dad. He refuses to use any thing but braid. He used 6 pound test on a baitcaster?!!?? He also like his breaking system loose. He got one bad backlash. (First year with a baitcaster) he then whipped it out very hard. His line snapped. This occurred literally 4 more times. Can someone help explain why it backslashes so easily and then the line becomes frayed? And what's the science behind backlashes.
  7. How can I fix my reel so that it does not backlash while the spool is still giving out line during a cast? I am new to baitcasting reels as of this year and have owned my Shimano Curado 201I for a couple months now. When I attempt a cast every once in a while my bait will stop mid air due to overrunning from the spool. This has recently been happening more often than before. I have tried both tightening and loosening the brakes. Although when tightened I feel like I cannot cast very far, and when too loose this problem seems to occur more often. Inside the cast system I have two of the switches on and two of them off. The dial knob is set at one which may be part of the problem. Also I have it spooled up with 50lb power pro braid(no backing but it is tied through the holes in the spool), and my rod is a 6'6" medium heavy St.Croix mojo bass. Thanks for any help.
  8. In April I bought a Quantum Catalyst casting reel (http://www.***.com/Quantum_Catalyst_Casting_Reels/descpage-QECC.html) to replace the notorious Twitchin bar Daiwa baitcaster. Honestly, the Daiwa worked perfectly fine for me up until my friend made me accidentally drop my rod and reel into the water... The Quantum reels smooth and everything seems to work fine, but every time I cast it it seems to want to backlash no matter what. Only time it doesn't backlash is if I cast VERY softly, which doesn't end up going very far. This is really frustrating when you know that the reel you bought has the potential to cast a lot further than that. I tried changing my fishing line to a slightly lighter fluorocarbon (15lb to 12lb) and the brand from the Trilene Professional grade to S eaguar Invisx. Apparently Seaguar casts better than the Trilene from online sources, which it did seem to help a little. Could my rod be a factor? I've always used Ugly Stiks and the Ugly Stik I have it rigged on is a 6'6" medium-heavy one. My theory is it's just that the Quantum is a much nicer reel so I'm not used to the spool spinning so fast. At the same time, I feel like it's not because I used to have no trouble at all with my Daiwa that I could cast as hard as I could with good distance and heavier line! I'm lost, help me out!
  9. Forgive my ignorance of the baitcaster style rods because I am still very new to them. But I have a theory about backlash? So basically everyone has told me to set my magnetics up so that my craws/jig n pigs will fall VERY slowly. However; when I do this I always get backlash, I figure because the line is still running out of the bail and I am not proficient at thumbing it at all. So I imagine I could just tighten it so the lure doesnt fall I will cast shorter, but it would be harder to backlash? Either way I cast only about 10ft with my baitcaster at the moment so it would not matter, should I do this to avoid backlash? Thanks!
  10. I'm having trouble dialing in the ACS braking system on my Smoke. I'll be fine for one lure, and then can't make a cast without having to fix a backlash. It doesn't always happen on the lighter lures, either. I throw weightless worms fine, then backlash on a lipless crankbait. It's got me a bit confused. Any advice?
  11. Today I put on the Vanish Fluorocarbon line and thought i had made a great choice, then i got to the water and made my first cast and kept my thumb on the line, when i look at the line, it's mildly backlashed. So i begin to pull the line out and i notice that as i go deeper, the backlash and loose line gets worse. I had to pull all the line off and reel it back in. Next cast i made sure that my thumb was tight on the line, but it did the same thing, so i cut it all off. Can someone tell me what the problem is? I have a Quantum Smoke baitcasting reel/rod.
  12. Today I put on the Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon 12lb test fishing line on my Quantum Smoke baitcasting reel. I thought i had made a great choice, but on my first cast i kept my thumb on the line, but still saw some mild backlash, i pulled some line out and noticed that the more i pulled out, the worse the backlash and loose line got. I pulled all of it out to the knot, then reeled it back in. My next cast, I was extra carefull to tightly keep my thumb on the line, but it did the same thing. I pulled all of it out and cut the line. Can someone tell me why this happened?
