  1. I have a 7'1 ML fast BPS Johnny Morris Platinum rod paired with the spinning reel. Got the combo on sale last Black Friday. The reel looks like a Daiwa and have read they make them. I've searched numerous times, but can't seem to find a solid answer on who manufactures their rods. Anyone got the scoop?
  2. I have read many reviews on BPS's own website on the lack of durability on these rods. On the other hand, people on this very forum have endorsed this rod as a good casting rod to use overall. From what I gather it is a pretty great rod to use(sensitivity wise and just general use and weight), however, many had the rod break on them under regular circumstances such as during the hookset. What is the whole story of the durablity issues? (As I see this as a major blocking point from purchasing this rig)
  3. I had the best day of fishing I have had since last year. Went out for around 2 hours, caught around 40-ish bluegills, 10 pumpkin seed, 13 black crappies, an 24" pickerel, and two bass, one 8" the other at least a pound. (catch & release) Not a good day of fishing for most people, but a great day for me since the fishing here has been really tough. Caught all the sunfish with a 1/32oz trout magnet. The pumpkin seed were all at least 10", caught the pickerel on a small 1/8oz jig head with a 2" BPS speed shad. I caught them all at a new pond which is now my favorite, Mill Pond in Nashua, NH.
  4. Does anyone have any experience with these lipless Crankbaits ( bps xts or bps xps) Got a gift certificate and want to make it go as far as possible. They get decent reviews on the BPS site but not sure. thanks Gregg
  5. Hey folks, I bought a Bass Pro Qualifier baitcast reel a few weeks ago, and I've taken it out ten times so far. I was extremely satisfied with its performance up until yesterday, when I found that the spool tension knob has apparently stopped working. I can tighten the knob all the way, yet my bait still drops to the ground quickly once I press the thumb bar. I don't know what I could have done wrong to make this happen- unless it could be hosing down the reel after a day of fishing? Where I fish, there's often a thick layer of mucky scum that gets all over the reel, so when I get home I tighten down the star drag, put the hose sprayer on its "Soak" setting and douse the reel, cast and retrieve a couple of times, and then re-loosen the star drag for storage. Anyone know how I might go about diagnosing the problem with the spool tension? Of course, I can take it back to Bass Pro and let them deal with it, but I'd like to try to resolve it myself if possible. They're sixty miles away.
  6. Hey everyone, I've been waiting forever to do this - finally took my new fishing kayak out (Feel Free Lure 11.5 which I am in love with!). It is what I was waiting for to break out my new setups purchased over the winter months. I've been an avid bass fisherman my whole life, but only carried one setup with me for a good 20 years - a quantum ac500pt baitcaster on a bps bionic blade (6'6" M/F). That setup is still going strong after some winter tlc but now gracefully retired. Only last summer after getting back into bass fishing full on, did I purchase a second setup - a used version of my quantum and a used bionic blade, this time a MH/F (I wanted the same models/years/style). Well, needless to say, I really embraced the sport as I did when I was a child, and moved on to purchase some nicer equipment this winter, during sales and plenty of online shopping around. Here's what I ended up with along with reviews from my outing today: 1. Shimano Metanium 100 on a Shimano Expride 170MGA - 7' Glass composite Cranker; What can I say, this thing is a dream upgrade. Definitely my smoothest reel, casts effortlessly, and just a joy to use. With fishing being one of my main past times and way I rejuvenate for work and school, this was an investment worth making, and I'm so glad I did! I'm a big fan of the centrifugal braking system that Shimano has - feels more natural and smooth. Definitely different than magnetic braking, and once it's tuned, it's super smooth. The rod and reel combo felt like my lightest setup, but that could have also had to do with the balance, which is amazing. Slung my the lipless cranks I was using (1/2oz) the furthest I've ever casted that lure in that weight. Don't hesitate to ask me if you have more questions about this combo. Strung up with sufix 832 #30, which is an excellent line that casts super smooth - was super windy today so had a couple backlashes due to liberal tuning but the line barely dug in and was easy to fix. I had been using original Power Pro #30 on my old setups which is a strong and durable line, but does dig in more than the sufix. 2. Shimano Metanium 100 on a BPS Johnny Morris Signature series 7'2" MH/F. Well I've already told you about the reel, but I'm also in love with this combo. I had to get the JMSS to stay true to the power hump I've used for almost 20 years on the bionic blade. The JMSS is a decent upgrade from that with better blanks, and it is super light and comfortable. I had to have one power hump rod in my lineup! This rod loads more like a Moderate Fast, which I am really happy about as I was using it with a heavier, 3/4 lipless - again, this combo casts and performs amazingly! 3. Shimano Curado HGK on Shimano Curado rod - 6'10" MF. I had to pair these two together - how could you go wrong here? At first, I was concerned that I would be spoiled by my Metaniums and not end up liking this reel, but it is somewhat different. It is still smooth - not as smooth as the Metanium of course, but it's a great reel nonetheless. I'm really at odds between which one I like more, this or my Daiwa Tatula SV 103H that I'll review in a bit. I like that the side plate stays connected...definitely felt more comfortable adjusting it while on my kayak on a windy day than my Metaniums - talk about nerve wrecking lol. With it being so windy, I had to move my internal breaks to 3 versus my Metaniums which were on 2; however, I was also using a plastic worm with a weighted hook, so it was lighter and had more drag for the wind to carry. I was back lashing at first, but after setting internal brakes to 3, I was good to go. I think it can be said that the Metanium is an upgraded version of the Curado - both are very similar in look and feel with the Metanium being smoother and with better performance - and rightfully so. Am I glad I got the Curado? You bet I am...especially along side its counterpart rod. It's hard to compare to the looks of the Metanium and Expride combo, but the Curado combo is one of the best looking setups in my opinion. Super light setup (maybe not as balanced and as light as my Met combo's, but for the price it performs well). Hard to be disappointed with this one. 4. Daiwa Tatula SV 103H on a Dobyns Fury 705CB - so glad I got this setup! I feel like these two are a great match. I wanted a MH/MF setup (7') for chatterbaits/spinnerbaits mainly (and heavier cranks if need be) and with the SV in the mix, this fit the bill perfectly. Casted my chatterbait well with wind over 10mph and gusts up to 20mph. Granted, I wasn't casting into the wind, but I wasn't always casting with the wind either. The reel setup is super easy with just an outside dial to work with. I will say, as I mentioned before, the magnetic brakes on this are definitely different from the centrifugal ones on the Shimanos. They have more of a mushy or spongy (magnetic) feel, which is the best way I can describe it. Regardless, this setup was super smooth, and just ideal for chatterbaits. I paired the SV here, because I figured the SV braking system would be a good match for the higher drag baits I planned to use. I don't think I back lashed once with this setup, but I was also playing it conservatively with this one given I was using a skirted bait in high winds. When the wind dropped I was able to go down to 6 on the brakes, and averaged around 8. I might have been able to go lower, but didn't want to push it too much with the conditions. I've heard so many good things about Dobyns rods, I had to have at least one in my new lineup - they make amazing rods - light, sensitive, and high quality. Again, very happy with this purchase. 5. Abu Garcia Revo X Winch on an Okuma TCS Frog/Swimbait rod (7'3" H/F). This is my dedicated frogging setup and also reserved for punching mats. Spooled with original Power Pro #50. This one surprised me, guys. I wasn't sure how this one would perform, given the price difference from my other setups, but it casted just as far as my other setups today - this was with a 3/4 jig, however. Still though, it casted very well with no backlashes and I feel confident with this setup for heavy vegetation and pulling big ones out of it. A lot of people might wonder why I went with such a low gear ratio - I feel more confident with this setup as it is more likely I'm catching 10+ lb snakehead on this in heavy vegetation, and I just wanted a very low gear setup in my arsenal (will double as a deep cranker). The heavy rod performed well, and slung the 3/4 oz jig effortlessly. The reel wasn't as smooth as the others, but for the price, it did just fine. Happy with this setup as well! Well, that's what I have for now. I may edit this later as I try them some more, and might add some calm weather comments. If anyone has any specific questions for a reel, rod, combo, or comparison, please do not hesitate to ask!
  7. Hi all, Its been awhile since I posted (I know slacking!), I been reading your guys information still. I had a question about two different rods from two different companies. Tomorrow, I'm going to BPS Fishing Classic Sale (Excited), I know I'm like a kid in the candy store. I narrowed my selection down to two rods I want for throwing crankbaits from 1/2 oz to 3/4 oz. I'll be pairing this rod up with the Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier (can't beat the price at $49.99). I searched the forums to find an answer before I made a post but was unsuccessful. The two rods are Bass Pro Shops Crankin Stick ($80), or St. Croix Mojo Bass (graphite, $130). I want the rod to have some power (Medium Heavy 7 ft), and sensitivity. I know the Crankin Stick has glass and graphite mixed. I know St. Croix are known for sensitivity. I'll test the reel onto these two rods when I go there. I also did some research to find these two rods would be the best based off what I need the rod to do (throw crankbaits). The problem is I'm having a hard time to decide. I'd like to have some other thoughts before I go tomorrow. Which rod would be a better suite for a crankbait rod for power and sensitivity? Thanks all to who reply.
  8. Hey BR, What rods are you guys pairing your Pflueger President 6930 Spinning Reels with? Also, what rods are you guys pairing your Shimano Stradic 2500 Spinning Reels with? Thanks, Big Fish Small Pond
  9. Any recommendations for a M/F or ML/XF Spinning Rod under $100 would be much appreciated. I am doing some of my own research, buy would like to get input from you guys at BR. Thanks, Big Fish Small Pond
  10. Hey all, does anyone know if there are replacement handles available for the older gold carbonlite reels? I have 3 still going strong but one of the handles cracked yesterday on a hookset. Thanks!
  11. 6.4:1 BPS Pro Qualifier 7.5:1 Lews Tournament MB Which one would you use for Jigs? Which for Cranks/Jerkbaits/Spinnerbaits? Thanks!
  12. Hey guys, I need to pick up some new lures and stuff for the new year coming up and wanted to know, when does bps have their biggest sale. what about Cabela's. Thanks!
  13. just got a bps pro qualifier beginning of this year and i oiled the spool ends and bearings the other day and now sometimes when i reel it sounds like the reel is gurgling or like it has water in it. it has only happened a couple of times, dosnt seem to effect the reel at all but its kinda bothering me. anybody else ever have this problem? Thanks in advance! Joe
  14. Does anyone else's head spin when they're at BPS or Cabelas? Even if I take inventory and make a list of what I need, I end up having too many choices.
  15. i just bought this reel in 6.4;1 rh and i had taken it apart to clean the excess grease the manufacturers put on it and i stripped the screw that goes inside the frame i don't know what to do honestly. i was hoping for tips on how to get out a stripped screw.
  16. Hey bassresource community, new to the forum posting topics wise, however I have gleamed quite a bit already from different discussions viewable on these forums. I will be in the market for a couple new mid-level and in some cases low-level(St. Croix, G. Loomis, Fenwick, etc.) rod and reel set-ups for next season. I am not trying to use these rods with a particular type of bait, however, what I am looking for is overall versatilty. Since I will be waiting for the obligatory Black Friday and corresponding Cyber Monday sales, I have decided to receive invaluable input from those of you on these forums that harness much more fishing knowledge than myself. The Rods sizes and action I am leaning towards are as follows: Casting Rod 7' M F Casting Rod 7' MH XF Spinning Rod 6'6"-7'2" M F-XF Spinning Rod 7' M F Also, a baitcaster reel to go along with each casting rod and spinning reels to match with the spinning rods. These sizes and action are not written in stone, it just seems to be a decent start from what I have come to understand as versatile rod characteristics. I am open to any advice given my way on this topic. Tight Lines Guys
  17. I was on bass pro shops website looking for the BPS johnny morris carbon black baitcaster and i couldnt find it. My question is do they still make them?? Thanks if anyone has answers much appreciated.
  18. I'm looking to get more into crankbaits. I don't necessarily want to spend a ton of money on one. I have an Abu Veritas 7' med, with a med-fast taper, but it feels pretty stiff, so I don't know. Though I won't skimp on the reel, it'll probably be a BB1. So was looking at Bass Pro's crankin sticks. I was wondering how well these actually work for regular med-deep diving crankbaits. They are labeled as fast action, which I was a little confused, and I would think it would be better to have a more whippy tip to throw cranks? I also looked at the W&M Skeet Tessera S glass, but I wasn't sure. I know the crankin sticks go on sale. So do they basically have a cranking stick for any application, like sq. bills through deep divers? Thanks
  19. Does anyone know how bass pro handles their rod/reel warranty. I'm interested in the PQ and Caronlite combo but I can't find any warranty info on their website. Anybody know how they handle damage claims or returns?
  20. Hey guys, i saw today that bass pro has released their "my guide" fishing app. It is supposed to tell you a lot of things, like good times to fish, record fishing spots/where you caught fish, and mabye even a fishing log. Here is a link to see more https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bass-pro-shops-myguide-hunt/id549863378?ls=1&mt=8 . So what i want to know is if any of you guys have it, and if so, is it worth getting? Thanks in advance!
  21. I have a Bass Pro Shops Inshore Extreme reel that I bought from BPS about 2 years ago. If you are not familiar with this reel, it's the same as a BPS Nitro(made by Browning I BELIEVE). It worked great up until I got tangled in battle with an enormous sting ray with a wing span of at least 3ft. For about 45 minutes I fought the fish, chasing him back and forth across the river. While pumping the rod up, all of a sudden, the drag on the reel instantly released. No pressure on the spool at all. I cut the line and the fish and I parted ways; he left tired, while I left with a broken reel. When I took it home to inspect the internals, my first thought was that it was drag was worn out. A thought in the back of my head kept telling me that it was not the drag because to my knowledge, they do not just lose their grip instantly. It turned out it wasn't the drag. I checked the ratchet drag washer. Not that either. However I did notice that even with the spool tension locked all the way down, there remained a lot of slop in the spool. I took the spool out of the reel, and I came to the realization that the spool had become detatched from the shaft; it was now free-spinning. Without being attatched to the shaft, the spool will not rotate. I am not sure how this would happen. Furthermore, I am not sure WHY this would happen; how was this spool attatched in the first place? I see no remnants of glue or any kind of metal bond. It is not pressed on. I have no idea how it was held in place to begin with! Has anyone ever had this occur to them? Is this a manufacturing defect? Most importantly, how can I fix it?? Thank you for your patience, firstcoastfisher
  22. Looking at getting a new baitcaster and was looking a the BPS reels and I was wondering the difference between Carbonlite and Signature Series. Which ones better, or which one you prefer.
