  1. Now thats quite a nice bass to get started on. That will get him hooked. Hes quite a happy camper
  2. I was fishing at a local neighborhood pond here in charlotte and I saw fish just like the ones your are describing. Lol maybe its the same pond. anyway yea they are almost certainly grass carp. To get those bass biting i got three words. BIG A$$ TUBE. Bounce it all over that big girl. If she still isn't biting cast past her and bring it up past her tail and let it sit behind her. I have caught many a big bass in ponds by doing this.
  3. btw i thinks FLW is still in town you may want to check on that. The fish will be a little shut mouth from seeing all the lures.
  4. Been catching a lot of fish on beds at the south part of the lake. The northern part maybe entering post spawn but towards the dam they are on their beds. Rocky coves have produced ALOT of bass for me. the 4 lbers are nailing absolutely everything it seems. Tubes however has been the kicker for me. Good luck
  5. Go to the nearest creek channel. Find any type of point jutting into the channel and chuck a swimbait, crankbait, spinnerbait, and then if they still aren't hitting go back with a jig or soft plastic. Thats my tactic after a rain.
  6. Just wanted to see what everyones favorite month of the year to fish was and why. I combined August with July and December with January because to me they are very similar. (to me at least). Looking forward to the responses. ;D
  7. Michael Schilling, Salt can be put in livewells. It is, like hydrogen peroxide put in livewells in very small concentrations. Freshwater itself is 100% free of salt. Freshwater is typically less than 1% salt. In fact bass, like humans need salt and other electrolytes in the blood. We humans replace it through gatorade and other sports drinks. You can replace the electrolytes in a bass by placing small amounts of salt in your livewell. I personally use maybe a half ounce or less per gallon of water. I have heard of far more per gallon. upwards of 1 ounce per gallon.
  8. I dont like snakes and I tend to leave them alone but around my house snakes are always up to no good. I live on a farm and if a snake is within 200 feet of the chicken coop he might as well say his prayers. But if I see one out in the wild where it will do no harm to anything then I avoid and let it be. Sometimes though the deed needs to be done.
  9. They were agressive and didn't need to be enticed with a finesse worm. Or your simply the better fishermen. ;D ;D
  10. I went out monday. I got a few fish very shallow. I think they were making there beds but thats hard to know as its hard to sight fish on wylie. But they were in less than four feet of water. But as M starr said most of the fish on in 10 ft +-. They are still transitioning to bedding and are pretty eager to eat any baitfish imitation. I would try a jerk bait on points, structure, and channels that are between deep and shallow water. I caught a 4 + lber on a jerbait fishing a point that was next to the river channel but gaurding a shallow cove. Good luck. Tell us how it goes.
  11. Theres a time to do crazy stuff like this. But Bass Pro, come on! They could be doing something much more worth while, like wasting precious dollars on fishing lures. ;D ;D
  12. I dont believe the are threaded. My grandad had to replace his shaft on his motorguide. I will ask him how he did it and get back to you.
  13. I would look for an aluminum bass tracker. For around 5000 you can get a REALLY nice used tracker. They are simple yet very effective. They are the fastest being they are aluminum but unless you plan on going 60 + the tracker is perfect. Plus they are rugged and you dont have to worry about the gell coats or any of that. As far as engines, stay with the main brands, (Mercury, Johnson, Evinrude, Yamaha). That way if your engine happens to break the repairs are cheaper. I have a friend who has some oddball engine and he had to ship it by freight to get it fixed because all the marinas around here refused to fix it. Good Luck and post a picture of your new boat when you get it. We all like to see someones new boat.
  14. I would fan cast a deep water spot. Pick any spot that you know has fish and structure. Fan cast either a shakey head or other finesse plastic. Spend at least a couple minutes per cast. Yes, a couple minutes. Then cast again to a spot just a little to the side of the previous cast. Like everyone else has been saying fish it SLOW. It doesn't hurt to let a shakey head deadstick for half a minute or more.
  15. I fish a tube like its nobody's business. I dont know why I am so good at it. My buddies will use the same rig as me but I will still outfish 20-1. I am great at most soft plastics but man give me a gitzit and I will fish you out of the boat. However give me a crankbait and I might as well cut the crankbait off and cast a bare line.
  16. 5-3 feet anything about 50. But less than three i wont see many fish there unless its late afternoon in 50 degree water. The fishing really kicks up there when the water hits like 58-59 for me.
  17. Kanawha and Toe rivers are pretty good for smallmouth.
  18. tinboats.net is great for getting ideas for modifying jon boats. I have gotten massive amounts of ideas from the site.
  19. What do you mean by sturdy? Flat bottom is more stable, V is better at cutting through the water. Flats can typically hold up to more abuse as well, but they are slower. I hope i answered your question.
  20. If the bottom width is 50 inches than you can most definitely deck it. I would check for leaks and then place it in the water (small pond would be best) to see about where the water line is. You dont want to deck too high above the water level, but with a 50 inch bottom width you dont have to be super conservative.
  21. The stripers in lake norman are fun to fish for. As far as largemouth I would look in the coves in the late afternoon and fish the flats and creek channels in the morning. Look for any cover that crappie may hang around and for any suspending bait fish. Bass will not be far away. As far as bait, you cant go wrong with any crankbait, but soft swimbaits are very productive for me right now. good luck.
  22. Do you have a picture of what happened. I think it sounds like one end has snapped. Which end is it? Is it the pedal end or more common, the connetion between the cable and the turning gears (located in the shaft head)?
  23. You will be a little less stable standing above the waterline on a deck than if you were below it standing on the bottom of the boat. The extent really depends on your boat. If you have 1436 then you will be Very unstable. Where as if you have a a 1654 you wont lose as much stability. Typically if you put a deck at the waterline of any boat however, it wont lose to much stability. What kind of boat do you plan on modding? :-?. This will help us give you a definite answer.
