How much do you invest for rods you know won't be used regularly? I'm thinking of picking up a 7' M/F rod that I could use for walleye fishing with my brother once or twice a year and other than that would be my loaner rod for friends and guests.

All my life. There are pictures of me fishing with my Dad at 2 or 3. I did take a long break from about 15-30 where I barely fished. Been back at it seriously for about 7 years.

Be excited to fish new water. Look at it as a challenge and a way to improve your fishing.

I won't recommend specific equipment but I would suggest that for fishing soft plastics you're going to want as sensitive a rod as you can afford.
