  1. today i added 4 shiners (for a total of 9), 2 mudminnows, and a warmouth.
  2. for my science fair project, i tested fishing line. here are the results i got, i figured someone might find them useful/interesting. sorry everything's in metric, but that's the way science goes...also sorry for the crappy columns, but i just can't get them straight, but i think you can figure it out *note, the breaking strength might be a little lower than the actual breaking strength because the down pressure from the hose was not accounted for. **For Each Chart, in order from left to right, the lines go: P-Line CXX, Spiderwire XXX Super Mono, Berkley Trilene XL, Stren Original, Shakespeare Outcast, all 10lb test. Breaking Strength (kg): Trial 1 8.36 2.93 3.84 4.94 4.53 Trial 2 8.97 3.38 3.21 6.22 3.98 Trial 3 8.16 4.59 4.49 5.56 4.63 Trial 4 8.21 4.64 3.10 5.35 2.98 Trial 5 8.66 3.88 3.09 5.76 4.13 Avg. 8.47 3.88 3.55 5.57 4.05 A section of 4.5 kg (10 lb) test line with a loop at the end was hanging down from a support. A bucket was hanging from the loop in the line. The bucket was slowly filled with water until the line supporting it snapped. When the line snapped, the bucket full of water was weighed on an accurate, hanging scale. The breaking weight was recorded. Abrasion Resistance (numer of cycles): Trial 1 7 3 1 9 4 Trial 2 8 3 2 11 3 Trial 3 9 3 2 11 3 Trial 4 9 2 4 9 3 Trial 5 8 3 4 12 3 Avg. 8 3 3 10 3 A section of 4.5 kg (10 lb) test line with a 1.36 kg (3 lb) weight on the end was repeatedly pulled across a round pipe covered in 130 grit sandpaper at a constant slope of 45°. One cycle consisted of the line being slid down the sandpaper 7.6 cm (3), and up the sandpaper 7.6 cm (3). The number of cycles was recorded.
  3. nice step by step for photo finishing you sized that perch nicely. dont forget to paint the back and belly to match the bait after your first coat of epoxy.
  4. get craft store acrylic paints and thin them with windex, not water, water will bead up the paint, windex doesn't. windex also doesn't change the color of the paint.
  5. went out and got an airpump and bubble rod LT exposure, 0.5 seconds
  6. all the decorations (except the rocks) are fake.
  7. i put in 5 golden shiners from the creek to start cycling the tank.
  8. got it filled and runnin!
  9. i'm not really sure what i'm going to put in it. definitley either bass, bluegill, warmouth, or something like that. QUESTION how do i set up my powerhead? im thinking it gets submerged, and the air hose is out of the tank, and it draws in air from the top and water from the bottom and shoots them both out of the side? but when i run it, there are no bubbles coming out of the side, just water. is this right?
  10. i like the pickerel
  11. i got $123 worth of stuff for the aquarium today, including a master test kit and a bunch of decorations, including a cool log and really big plants fake plants. the rocks i got from the creek go well in this tank
  12. thanks guys. bestnetman, your post was very helpful i planned on cycling the tank with some golden shiners from the creek, because they're in the carp/minnow family, and they're in the same family as goldfish, which are normally use to cycle tanks. golden shiners look cooler anyway as for the filter, i got a power filter and an undergravel filter, but i'm going to return the undergravel filter because i dont think it will be necessary or very helpful. my power filter cycles the water at 500 gph. i found some really neat big rocks down in the creek, huge chunks of quartz and some other smoothed out stones, i'm going to go down there and bring em back for my tank. i'll probably stick them in boiling water for a few minutes before i put them in my tank to kill any kind of bad organisms that are in/on the rocks. sam, that is exactly what i planned on doing with this tank! i dont plan on buying any living organisms to put in this, they'll all be caught wild. i do plan on putting bass in it, and i'm not going to argue with anyone over it, because i know those topics get heated i washed my gravel thoroughly before i put it in here is a pic of my tank now, the two decorations are just thrown in there, thats probably not where they will stay.
  13. i'm hoping PETA won't have to intervene :-[ if anyone has any tips and advice or help to offer, i'll gladly take it the tank is a 55 gallon.
  14. got an aquarium yesterday for christmas. its awesome! i love it. i can't wait to get it runnin'. i have the gravel in it now, and i'm going to get some more decorations tomorrow
  15. i would use it to buy a gift card and make it out to David Saavedra
  16. DT Flat 03 DT FAT 03
  17. oh i gotcha i misunderstood, my apologies. shoot, if you're gonna stock up on DT's to fill your balsa box, you probably won't need to buy any of the 25-30 dollar handmade baits. DT's are just awesome!
  18. the shells are from long long ago. they weren't deposited by a flood, they were just deposited. the entire southern maryland peninsula used to be under the sea a long time ago (i'm not sure how long ago), so these were just deposited on the sea floor. i'm [probably] going back there tomorrow and i'll bring the camera to take a few pics along the way.
  19. a few issues here. 1.) DT's are not handmade, they're mass produced in a factory. 2.) DT's aren't anywhere near $25-30 baits, try $6 3.) Yes they are wooden, balsa wood. as for your actual question, DT's are awesome. my favorite crankbait for sure. Be sure to get some DT 3's (FAT), DT 4's, DT 6's, and DT 10's. they have great action and catch me a lot of fish. i dont really have a comparison as to how they work compared to others because DT's are pretty much the only crankbait i throw. i do occasionally throw a bandit, and the DT's have a much better action than the bandits.
  20. so far i've caught black nose dace, golden shiners, warmouth, eastern mudminnows, one shorthead red horse, and a few crawfish.
  21. nope, never considered it. i wouldnt want to anyway, too technical. i was really looking for some fossils/sharks teeth in that section of the creek with all the shells, but i couldnt find a single one. none of the shells were fossilized.
  22. another one of my creek threads : i went down to the creek yesterday and decided to walk upstream. all the way to the highway, which is a little over a mile walk.. found some interesting things on the way. first i found a raccoon jaw laying ontop of some pebbles on the stream bank. it only had 4 teeth in it, and i found a molar laying about 4 inches away from the jaw. i searched for more bones but came up with nothing. further upstream i walked under some powerlines. after i got past them, the terrain totally changed. it went from real thick woods with a lot of undergrowth to open woods with almost no undergrowth, just sparse trees. from the powerlines to a waterfall about 1/5 of a mile upstream the creek bed was just littered with old shells. there were so many it was unbelievable. what was more interesting was that there were no shells downstream of the powerlines, and there was not a single shell upstream of the waterfall. they were all within that little stretch of creek. i took some of the good, intact shells, and a really big one (biggest i saw, its about 7" across) and the raccoon jaw home with me. i whitened the jaw overnight so it wasn't all gross looking:
  23. its definitley old. you can tell by the skirt style. they don't make them like that anymore.
