  1. I'll put my mouse away and get away from the keyboard. My playground for more than fifty years were the waters from West Palm Beach east to Freeport, Bahamas and south to the Cay Sal banks. While I may be inexperienced when it comes to targeting bass with baitcasting reels, I am a seasoned offshore angler and spearfisherman. Over the years, I've gained a profound respect and love for the ocean and for fishing and a keen understanding of the gear that’s needed to hunt and catch the big ones offshore. My choice to spend a little more on the rods that I believe will suit my needs makes perfect sense to me and I’ve earned the right to choose the gear I think will work best to enhance my bass fishing experience while providing durability, sensitivity, and performance. I ain’t no spring chicken… and I don’t have many shaves left. -Edward

It was never my intention to cause discomfort to anyone. After reflecting on my words, I realize how it may have come across, and I am genuinely sorry. Thank you to those who have offered their guidance, patience, and suggestions. I greatly appreciate it, and I will take your advice to heart. Once again, I sincerely and humbly apologize. -Edward
  3. As recommended, I will pair the rods with Zillion SV reels. I feel ashamed. I humbly and sincerely apologize to everyone here for expressing my frustration on this thread. 4. I appreciate you both for taking the time to share your views. That said, No, I don't want to learn quick what I'd like is to get four straight answers before Christmas... While the three reels I mention share an "SV" in the name, they may have different braking systems. I may just buy one of each with any random gear ratio, throw the names in a hat, and just pair them randomly to the three rods... May the chips fall where they fall... At some point, I want to get reels on these rods. I'm not pulling teeth. This may be my final post on this forum.
  5. Hello Everyone, I’m looking for specific guidance on which three reels would be best suited to my rods, particularly in terms of minimizing the severity of bird’s nests as I continue to hone my casting technique. I’m not prioritizing casting distance nor reel smoothness at the moment. My focus is solely on improving my thumbing technique and reducing the impact of those inevitable backlashes. Below are three of the five the rods for which I wish to purchase new reels as soon as possible. I’d greatly appreciate any recommendations for specific years and models of reels that would work best with each rod. If possible, could you please also include your suggestions for the gear ratio you think would be ideal? Rod 1: 7'5" MHf Megabass Levante Braillist Lure Weight Range: 3/8 oz. to 1 oz. Typical Baits: Bottom-contact jig, Texas rig, Carolina rig, wacky rig, spinnerbait, bladed jig, swim jig, flashy swimmer Priority: Minimizing backlashes while working on my thumbing technique. Year and Model of Reel Recommendation for Rod 1:________________________ Rod 2: 7'2" MHmf Evergreen Combat Stick Lure Weight Range: 3/8 oz. to 1-1/4 oz. Typical Baits: Topwater plugs, small swimbaits, 10-20 ft. crankbaits, 110-size and larger jerkbaits Priority: Minimizing backlashes while working on my thumbing technique. Year and Model of Reel Recommendation for Rod 2:________________________ Rod 3: 7' MHmf Alpha Angler Rebound Lure Weight Range: 1/4 oz. to 1 oz. Typical Baits: Crankbaits up to 10 ft. Priority: Minimizing backlashes while working on my thumbing technique. Year and Model of Reel Recommendation for Rod 3:_______________________ 4. Survey: In general, which of the following three reels do you think is the least free (in terms of brake systems) and therefore the least susceptible to backlashing? a.) Tatula SV reel variants b.) Alphas SV reels c.) Zillion SV reels Thanks in advance for your help.
  6. Would you be willing to recommend specifically which year and model I should pair with each of the three rods I'm pairing, please?
  7. In the end though, as others have stated above.... Avoiding backlashes is something you learn to control with thumb control, but there's no denying that a good braking system helps, and those Tatula SV reels are known for being braked heavily enough to help minimize issues. Hope this helps. I wanted to follow up on your advice regarding which reels might best help with backlash mitigation as I continue to refine my casting skills. To clarify: I do not have my mind set on the Tatula SV reels, but as you have kindly emphasized in a post above, I am focusing exclusively on improving my technique and on purchasing the right reels for me… Casting distance and reel smoothness aren’t my priorities for now. My priorities are working on my technique and mitigating the severity of those inevitable backlashes. My main fishing goal these coming years is only to make the inevitable backlashing less severe and stressful… and easier to manage as I learn and gain experience. That’s it. Once I’ve accomplished that, I may move on to reels that provide smoothness and greater distance. These are the reels you’ve suggested (correct me if I’m off here): 2020 Tatula SV TW (smaller frame) — I saw this listed as a "bait reel." Should that be a red flag? 2020 Tatula 100 (smaller frame) 2017 Tatula SV 103 TW (larger frame) 2017 Tatula CT (larger frame) Now here’s the other part of my question. Have you had the opportunity to try these 2024 models yet? 2024 Tatula SV 100 2024 Tatula SV TW 150 Would you be willing to share your thoughts or initial impressions on these newer models? I’m guessing they’re of the smaller frame variety, but I could be wrong. For others here, I’m still seeking specific year and model recommendations on reels that would make the inevitable bird's nests less severe as I continue to improve my casting and thumbing skills. So, if anyone has direct experience with the models that are forgiving in terms of backlash, I’d greatly appreciate your input! Any thoughts on specifically which year and models might fit the bill for each rod would be fantastic in helping me to place an order for three reels. There are so many options out there, and my brain just isn’t working like it used to and I’m finding it quite overwhelming. Thank you so much in advance for your help and guidance. I really appreciate any input you can provide! @FrnkNsteen Here’s the information you requested regarding my intended baits. I’ve updated the year and model recommendation requests to include the specific baits I plan on using with each of the three rods in order to add the context you requested. Rod 1: 7’5” MHf Megabass Levante Braillist (3/8 to 1 oz. lures). Typical Baits: Bottom-contact jig, Texas rig, Carolina rig, wacky rig, spinnerbait, bladed jig, swim jig, flashy swimmer Year and model of the reel you recommend I purchase for Rod 1 is:__________________________________ Rod 2: 7’2” MHmf Evergreen Combat Stick (3/8 to 1-1/4 oz. lures). Typical Baits: Topwater plugs, small swimbaits, 10-20 ft. crankbaits, 110-size and larger jerkbaits Year and model of the reel you recommend I purchase for Rod 2 is:__________________________________ Rod 3: 7’ MHmf Alpha Angler Rebound. (1/4 to 1 oz lures). Typical Baits: Crankbaits up to 10 ft. Year and model of the reel you recommend I purchase for Rod 3 is:__________________________________ Thanks in advance for your help.
  8. Thank you. No one had yet offered this option. Like all others, I will certainly research it before making my final decision on my three upcoming reel purchases [Thumbs up!] Thank you very much for your recommendations~ I haven't decided yet but if the Zillions are in fact more free and more susceptible to backlashing than the Tatulas or the JDM Alphas, I may hold off on them for the first few years. Am I correct in assuming that you didn't have those same issues you mentioned with the 2024 Tatula SV reels? If so, and if you do recommend them for my intended purpose and goals, which one of the two 2024 models (100 or 150) do you recommend for which rod, please?
  9. Thank you so much for the wealth of information I've gathered so far! It's been helpful, and I’m eager to continue learning. But if I may, I’d like to ask for some additional guidance. I’m looking to make three reel purchases this week, and I would really, really appreciate your advice on pairing the right reels for me with the following three rods in my collection. Specifically, I’m hoping for your recommendations on the year and model of Tatula reels that would make their inevitable backlashing the least severe. Rod 1: 7’5” MHf Megabass Levante Braillist (3/8 to 1 oz. lures). Year and model of the Tatula reel you recommend I purchase for Rod 1:__________________________________ Rod 2: 7’2” MHmf Evergreen Combat Stick (3/8 to 1-1/4 oz. lures). Year and model of the Tatula reel you recommend I purchase for Rod 2:__________________________________ Rod 3: 7’ MHmf Alpha Angler Rebound. (1/4 to 1 oz lures). Year and model of the Tatula reel you recommend I purchase for Rod 3:__________________________________ I would be very grateful for your input. Thank you again for your time and expertise! Oh... and are the JDM versions of the them different or better than what I can get here? Thank you so much!
  10. I just wanted to mention that I asked for suggestions on the year and model, as well as which Tatula SV braking system you'd recommend because when I searched "Tatula SV" on reelcatalog.com, it showed 38 different reels, but the various JDM and domestic sites I've visited only list a few different options.
  11. Hi everyone, At this stage of my life, where stress-free relaxation is more important than reel smoothness, durability, maximizing casting distance, or catching fish, the Daiwa Tatula SV reels seem to be the best fit for me as I gain casting experience. I recently got recommendations for the Tatula SV reels for mitigating bird’s nests. While doing the research, I came across the new SV TW 150 with the Magforce-Z brakes. After reading more about these brakes, they seemed like exactly what I needed to reduce backlashes. However, when I checked Daiwa's website for more details, I was surprised to see the Tatula SV (no numbers after it) listed with the Air Brake System, not Magforce-Z. I dug deeper and found that some sources claim the Air Brake System is an upgrade to Magforce-Z. But then, when I compared different models on ReelCatalog.com, it showed that the 2024 reels still have Magforce-Z, and the JDM 20 Tatula SV TW 103 has both Magforce-Z and the Air Brake System. This was all very confusing! I decided to call Daiwa for clarification, but as you might expect, the representative wasn’t very certain about the details. He mentioned that the Air Brake System is generally better at preventing backlashes than Magforce-Z but might not be as effective with heavier lures over an ounce. I’m reluctant to believe anything he said. At this point, I’m really unsure what to trust. Does anyone here have experience with or knowledge of both of these braking systems? Yesterday, I made the decision to put Daiwa Tatula SV reels on three rods after guidance from forum members but specifically which SV reel and with which braking system is still unclear to me. These are the three rods I wish to pair with Daiwa Tatula SV reels. Specifically, with the sole purpose of mitigating bird’s nests, which Tatula SV year and model numbers do you recommend for each rod? Other than price, is there a difference in the JDM version of it? Rod 1: 7’5” MHf Megabass Levante Braillist (3/8 to 1 oz. lures) Rod 2: 7’2” MHmf Evergreen Combat Stick (3/8 to 1-1/4 oz. lures) Rod 3: a crankbait rod yet to be determined... Possibly the 7’ MHmf Alpha Angler Rebound. (1/4 to 1 oz lures) Thanks in advance for your help!
  12. Since you didn't mention anything about bladed jigs, I'd just go with the Rebound. Really with baits that large, aggressive brakes and an SV spool aren’t gonna do too much as there is so much force pulling line off of the spool. As long as you maintain good casting mechanics with swimbait rods, and have correct spool tension, you shouldn’t backlash with a swimbait. scott Hi everyone, I want to deeply thank all those who have contributed so far and shared your valuable insights. I’ll continue to monitor this thread for any new ideas or contributions from members who haven’t chimed in yet. After researching the reels recommended for minimizing backlashes as I improve my casting, I’m now leaning towards the Tatula SV reels. I’ve spent a lot of time today reading up on the Alphas SV, Zillion SV, and SLX, and after learning more about Magforce-Z brakes, I’m more convinced that these brakes are the right choice for me at this point in my bass fishing journey. At this stage of my life, where stress-free relaxation is more important than reel smoothness, durability, maximum casting distance, or catching fish, the Tatula SV reels with Magforce-Z seems to be a good fit for me. From my research, it appears that the Zillion SV with Magforce-Z is only available in the 10-speed version, and none of the Alphas nor the SLX have this braking system. This is why I’m now leaning towards the Tatula SV for minimizing the backlash issues that I will inevitably encounter while I continue to improve my casting skills. As for the spinning reel to upgrade Rod 1, I’m strongly considering the Shimano Vanford 2500 from Japan, which a number of you recommended. Thanks for that suggestion. It seems like a solid choice for lighter duty… much more so than the Stradic. For my crankbait rod, which is still missing in my lineup, I’m leaning towards the Alpha Angler Rebound, though I may hold off on purchasing it this month. Before pulling the trigger on my fifth rod, I’d love to hear more from anglers who prefer graphite over glass rods and why they reject the glass. If not, I will search the forum before buying that fifth rod for more insight as to keep this thread on its main topic, backlash resistant reels for my lineup. Ulitimately, I may go with one of the graphite rods recommended by Brandon or Tom. I’m also waiting and hoping to hear from some of the forum members I’ve been following over the past few months who haven’t yet commented on my thread or who may not have been around the last couple of days. Your thoughts would be much appreciated. For rod 4, I’m strongly leaning towards the Tatula 300, but I already have a cheaper reel on that rod. So, I’ll be waiting for more feedback on why this might be a better choice than the Tranx 300 that was recommended to me by my fishin’ buddy. I now understand that minimizing backlashes isn’t as crucial with heavier baits on this rod (my MHmf). Scott, I don’t plan on throwing anything much heavier than 4 ounces on this rod. Since you have both reels, do you think I should be leaning towards the tat 200 for it instead? Additionally, for reels on rod 2 (MHf) and rod 3 (MHmf), I’m hoping to get some feedback on which one would be better served by the Tatula SV 100 and which one by the Tatula SV 150. Also, do you think I should jump on the newer 2024 model of the Tatula SV 150? I’d also like to get more feedback on if rod 2 should have an 8-speed, rod 3 a 7-speed, and that rod 4 and rod 5 would both be served by 6-speed reels before pulling the trigger. Lastly, should I buy the Tatula SVs from Japan and search the forum for ideas of where to look or should I get them here? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and advice! Thanks again for all your help. I’m very grateful~ Well, in my most recent post above, I quoted most of the contributors to this thread. The system is only showing the first few... So, if you don't see yourself there, I'm sorry. It wasn't my intention to leave you out... I'm brand new to forums. ----- And now it merged that last post with the long one and I still can't edit... {smh] I'm goin' to bed, fellas... will it merge it again?
  13. Thank you, Scott, for thoroughly addressing all of the questions in the original post.
