As for brands and colors, I've heard good things about Strike King and Zoom for soft plastic lizards. Watermelon red and green pumpkin are classic colors that often work well.
It's cool you're getting back into using those baits after so long. I haven't thrown them in ages either, but I remember they used to be quite effective.
