I got an Abu Garcia Max Z casting reel (got it on sale for $15 new) and a 6’10 MHFA lews laser SG1 rod. Nothing special by any means, but should get the job done. Im aiming to throw worms, jigs, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, topwaters.
What exact brand, line type, and pound test would you go with?
If I spool my baitcaster up with 20# braid (powerpro) and a flouro leader. Will that be okay if I were to throw treble hook baits (cranks, jerkbaits, etc.) Or is 20# braid too much for lures like that?
Also, my casting rod says it’s rated for 6-15 # line. I know the general consensus is never go below 20# for a baitcaster. Why are there casting rods with a low line rating then?
I’m afraid to throw 20# braid if my rods max line weight is 15#.
its a 7ft medium regular action daiwa rod
Hey man, my MGL 70 is still in the mail btw. Just wondering, if I were to make a long cast with a normal sized crankbait that dives 3-5ft would it spool me? My only concern at this point is that when casting things farther than flipping and pitching range I won’t have much line left on the spool.
I’m looking at buying a Shimano SLX MGL 70 baitcaster that comes with a 70 sized spool meaning it will hold very little heavy pound test. How problematic would it be to put 10lb braided test on it? Would the lighter line cause the line to dig in at the spool? I plan on using this to throw small cranks, jerk baits, weightless plastics mostly light lures. Would I be better off throwing 20lb or 30lb braid on this reel? If I throw 20-30lb braid on it I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to use a medium action rod to really toss those lighter baits and get the action I want in fear of the line test eventually being too much for the medium action rod guides.
May be over thinking it but hey, figured I’d ask and see what y’all have experienced.
