  3. I'm looking for some insight into what you guys would do to fish a new lake. I'm in Northern NJ, air temps around 80's and water temp 75. The lake is 40 acres, largemouth, pickerel, stocked with trout and infested with coontail that grows up to 5-6 feet below the surface for about 90% of it. Water depth goes to around 35-40 feet in the middle, with steep dropoffs off shore. From 5-10 feet off shore depth drops to 15ish feet. Sorry for the crappy quality, but the red notes on the left is the most heavily pressured area of the lake with the lily pads. There is shore access there so people fish those most often. Boat launch is bottom left, again heavily pressured with shore fisherman. On the right side of lake is some sunken trees. And on the top is quick dropoffs, where 5-10 feet off shore your already in 15 feet of water. I have tried throwing wacky rigged Senkos in the shallows, top water Spooks and Whopper ploppers around the edges of the lily pad fields and trees. Chatterbaits above the weed level, crankbaits get snagged on the coontail almost instantly. I think I'm missing fishing any of the real depth in the middle of the lake but there is still coontail throughout and am looking for suggestions. I'm used to fishing a much smaller pond without the weed infestation, and have access to a jonboat with a basic fishfinder. My next thought is to start using heavier weighted jigs and texas rigged worms to punch through the coontail and get to the bottom. What would you guys do? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!!
  4. Simple Question, can anyone recommend an actual good oar brand? I have a jon boat I row on a small pond, and first set of Caviness wood oars lasted about 20 years. I bought one new Caviness to replace one of the old that cracked, and it didn't last a full year before it split on both sides of the business end and ended up a toothpick. What do you guys use or recommend? I'm thinking about going aluminum to not worry about the wood rotting out like I've been having problems with. Thanks in advance!
  5. Thank you very much everyone for the advice. Figured that was best but nice to get some confirmation!
  6. Sorry if I'm being pretty particular in this but I know a lot of guys here have more experience than me and I could use input. I've decided on purchasing 2 rods to replace 2 broken ones this year. I'm sticking with St Croix as it's always worked for me, and have decided on a 6'6" Legend Elite Spinning, and 6'6" Legend Tournament Walleye Series. I 99% fish finesse, light lure stuff, but wanted one medium and one medium light as I won't be going up to Medium Heavy but wanted one rod with a bit more backbone than medium light. The simplest solution I know would be to just get both in the higher Elite series but I cant spend $750 on 2 rods right now. Which weight would you prefer on the higher quality rod as that will be what I'm fishing the most. I understand they're similar rods and very similar weights. The main difference I see between the 2 is the Elite has SCV and SCVI graphite which I'm assuming just means slightly more sensitive than the Walleye's SCIV. Bottom line, Medium Light on Elite Series where ultimate sensitivity is key? Or Medium light on the Legend Tournament Walleye because a lighter action would transmit bites better on a lower grade blank. Thanks in advance, cabin fever in the blizzard in NJ gives me time to ponder these trivial questions.
  7. Hey guys, with Christmas coming up I've decided to treat myself to a new spinning rod reel combo. I previously had a Pflueger Patriarch and loved how light it was on a St. Croix Legend Elite (until they ended up in the lake on a night fishing kayak trip . So the question is since they're only $30 apart in price, which would you guys recommend, the Patriarch or Stradic CI4? I've never used a Shimano but have heard great things. I've noticed that the Patriarch is an ounce lighter but I'm guessing one ounce wouldn't make or break or me. I'm leaning toward the Shimano if only because I feel like with a new rod it's kind of like a new start? I will be pairing it with a St Croix Legend Tournament Walleye Rod 6'6 ML in that sexy cobalt color lol if that makes a difference. Help a guy out with his decision and thanks in advance! =)
  8. Anyone know the difference between the Patriarch XT and the regular Patriarch? Is it just the blue and white color and .2 ounces? I'm having trouble deciding between the 2, and would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!
  9. The cap at the top of the reel seat came loose so the reel wouldn't stay snug. I shipped it back to them with their FedEx program for $15. Ups wanted like $50 and St. Croix even waived my return shipping cost!
  10. So my new rod came in today and it's 50 degrees and raining here. Can't not test it right? Glad I did lol
  11. ... Is top notch!!! I figured I would share my experience with them. I had a slight issue with one of my rods and this was the first time I ever had to send one back so I was a bit apprehensive. After speaking with them I felt like they really looked at my case on an individual basis and didn't give me a canned response where they were just trying to get me off the phone. Everything was resolved in 2 phone calls exactly as I hoped for and it couldn't have been a more pleasant experience. Just received my new rod today and am super excited to try it out =) I hope this helps anyone considering a future rod purchase knowing they stand behind their products with excellent customer support.
  12. I'll second Tackle Warehouse in addition to the usual Cabelas and Basspro. Unfortunately the 2 closest stores for me is like a 3 hr drive so it just makes sense to order online. I look forward to seeing what everybody else uses as well.
  13. Gotcha. I knew braid has no stretch but didnt factor in if I screw up the cast, which I know I will inevitably do. Sooner than later as well haha.
  14. Thanks for the replies guys. Forgive my ignorance but whats the reason for using a lower pound test mono instead of a higher braid?
