  1. They are just another tool in the box. Guys that use them, and nothing else come in with there tail between their legs just as much as guys who do nothing but fish frogs, or just jigs. I may be a lot of things, including a jerk, but a one trick pony I am not.
  2. The great thing about having a buddy who builds rods, is that he's building them for me "cheap".... Cost of materials (retail cost, not his cost,he gets a discount) plus a few bucks for his time, and some horse trading....IE,a bunch of my jigs and home made stuff. Yeah the lightning rods are great for what they are, and will still be my back up, loaner, and toss in the jeep rods, I just miss a few of the refinements of the higher end stuff I used to use, and have not been able to find mass production rods that had things just the way I want.... So this is the way to go.... I think, lol.
  3. As I mentioned in another post, I am tired of store bought production rods, and have a good buddy who is a custom builder. He has two rods he's building for me as we speak...and I am like a kid waiting for Santa. LOL. The details (or as much as I know, I am not too "up" on custom rod speak yet)...he's building them with components I picked out. Some because I have had them on rods before and liked, and others he "guided" me towards, based on his exp. as a builder. Rod # 1: 7'3" H/F casting.....being built on a MHX MB-874 blank, with split cork rear grip, no foregrip, PacBay Minima reel seat, and PacBay Minima guides. Will be used for pitching jigs and T-rigs into all but the thickest cover on my lakes. I really liked the Minima guides and reel seat on a St Croix Rage rod I had, but not the grip, that's why I went with them. Rod #2: 6'8" M/XF spinning............being built on a Batson/Rainshadow Immortal IMMS68MXFTC blank with, also, a split cork rear grip/no foregrip, a PacBay Minima reel seat, and Fuji K series guides. Will be my Shaky Head, flick shake, and light weightless plastics dock skipping rod.
  4. If I am not getting bit on, say, a green pumpkin senko, switching to watermelon red is idiotic............they are not biting that presentation, I'll switch to a jig or something else. A lot of people spend hours not getting bit, rotating through colors, then the fish turn on, and they get bit on the 35th different color bait they tried, and think that the color change was the reason they got bit. These are the people I kindly refer to as........idiots.
  5. Largemouth: Conesus lake pb....7lbs 2oz. 1 ounce jig, with a beaver as a trailer. Silver lake pb....6lbs 12oz. Frog Smallmouth: Silver lake pb....6lbs even. Drop shotted robo worm. Lake Erie pb....5lbs 14oz. Drop shotted gycb shad shape worm.
  6. I am not getting into this idiotic discussion again. Everyone knows what I think and use. The braid haters are never going to stop with their "rip the hooks out" nonsense. And LMAO at "show me what pro uses it".... You would be surprised at how uneducated and thoroughly unqualified some of these so called " pros" are.
  7. Frog, yum dinger, beaver of the week.
  8. That's transition time around here. Not quite still doing the things they have been all summer, and not on the fall stuff yet.... Best advice... Junk fish.
  9. The worst time to fish them is anytime, there are much better options for that style of bait on the market now....IMHO of course.
  10. Strike King S11's....I have given mine to several guys who wear much more expensive glasses, and they were like... "Why did I spend so much money on glasses before?"...having never owned anything any higher priced than these S11's, from the reactions I get from people who do, and have tried these, I don't think I ever will. They are pretty rugged too. Mine are going on 4 years old and are in fine shape.
  11. I prefer SK xd's....the 5xd gets the most use for me. It gets down to 12' just fine on a long cast, and 15+ feet long lining
  12. My grass fishing 101...............go over the top with a topwater bait, if they won't bite that, or slap and miss, rip a square billed crank or swim jig through it.....still no takers, but you know they are in the grass, next step is a slow falling wacky rigged bait, if that's hauling water............time to go straight to the bottom with any number of things. My # 1 choice would be a T-rigged plastic, or a jig. If none of that works..................go fish docks, or hard cover out side the grass, like an off shore rock pile, sunken boats, etc.... In our lakes around here, there are ALWAYS bass in the grass, but they can be some of the most finicky fish to get to bite, especially in clear water where the grass is easily seen and hammered by a legion of decent anglers. Not to mention they turn off or on at the drop of a hat, at almost seemingly random times. While there are more shallow water fisherman around here, fewer of them are any good, and it's a good way to get on some big fish when the grass bite is slow..........same with the deep water bite. Not to mention, shallow living big bass seem to be more "angry" in general, and can be irritated into biting. But boy, when those hogs turn on in the grass, it's possible to put a sack and a half of them in the boat FAST, but timing is the key. I know guys who are 100% grass guys who will live and die with that bite, and never go outside or shallow. They are the guys who will zero or middle it for weeks on end, but they are also the guys who will smash 20lb bags for weeks on end when it's "right". I am not quick to bail on the grass, but I will....especially if I haven't had a bite in 4 hours and have fished the crap out of good areas, but it can bite you........several times I have given up on the grass to go shallow, or deeper, and it's cost me, because while I have been farting around elsewhere............they turned on.
  13. The ammo monkey.......he over rides the congress of fishing related monkeys about the day after I put the boat up for the winter, and...............really never stays too silent. Often time him and the bait monkey conspire against me when I am in a place that has both.
  14. Yes, I am quoting myself LOL. Add the Storm Arashi to my list of favorites since I posted this. While I still use the SK KVD's a lot, the series 1 and 4s have gone bye bye in favor of the rattling Arashi, and I like the silent ones too. Plus...no need to change the hooks on these out of the package like the KVD's. While I prefer the Mustad KVD elite 1x strong, 2x short triple grips on my SK baits, the short shank 1x VMC's that come on the Arashi's are very good, and only get replaced if/when needed............then I use the KVD's on them.
  15. Same here. Unless it's tournament day, any tug on the line is fun. Flipping a jig in to the weeds and having a big pike smoke it is actually pretty cool. My two biggest pike on my home lake, a 13 and 15lber, were both caught on 8lb test + ML spinning gear. One drop shotting, one on a shaky head....talk about excitement. Pikeral will blast a frog with 10x's more savagery than a bass, and I have caught a few tiger muskies in Conesus this year...IDK what it is about them, but the are a lot meaner than pike, and almost have a look to them that says "go ahead, just try and get your lure back". I have yet to catch a muskie.
  16. About the only time I get skunked for bass is when largemouth fishing VERY early in the year before the water is out of the mid 30's temp wise....I mean like the day after the ice has left, or very very late in the year after the water temps drop below 40. What I do about it? In situation #1...............I either go home and just be glad to get out of the house after a long winter, or I go smallmouth fishing, and even that is hit or miss for me so early. If I get really desperate for some action I go looking for perch, which co-operate, but it's boring, and they are small. In situation #2............put the boat away for the year. That really is my measuring stick for when it's time to quit. The first time I get skunked when the water drops below 40, is time to call it a season.
  17. LOL.............and that's on casting gear, with spinning reels, you better have a priest, a rabbi, and a union pipe fitter on the boat with you.
  18. No need to throw good equipment in the lake once the dreaded rig is off LMAO. Same here..........but it does surprise me a few times a year.
  19. When I am not flipping a jig these are the bait I use: Yum Bad Mamma..........I bought a couple packs of these early this year to try, and I can't put them down. Havoc Pit Boss....Pretty close to the Yum bait, but with a little more action, I always think it's a good idea to have 2 baits that are close , but different, sometimes when the bite is hot on one, and it slows, a few extra bites for some reason can be milked out just by giving them a subtle diffrence. Yum Christie Craw....when I (more importantly the bass) want a bait with a little more movement. I'll reach for a "flapping" style bait anytime the water is dirty, and/or there is a nice "chop" on the water from wind and they are not chasing moving baits, plus this thing is a killer swimjig trailer. Netbait Paca Craw....same reasoning as applies to the Bad Mamma/Pit Boss...plus it comes in biggger and smaller sizes than the Christie craw. Yum Dinger..........when they are in cover, and NOT biting any kind of craw/creature bait or a jig, pegging a sinker to the nose of a dinger gets bit.
  20. Strike King Red Eye Shad, and the old Xcaliber's...which when gone/bitten off will be replaced by the new/same??? Booyah's. Another sleeper bait that get's little love is the Storm Rock'n Shad, IMHO it's the best lipless bait of the Rapala/VMC group...I like it much better than any of the Rapala branded lipless cranks.
  21. No, I am not either. I will say this...Koppers might be the best company at catching fisherman. You guys run right out and buy your $13 dollar fancy pants thingy, I'll just be over here catching fish on my stuff.
  22. 5" stick bait rigged multiple ways, followed closely by a 4"ish beaver style bait, also rigged multiple ways.
  23. For worms, I like the Havoc bottom hoppers, and the Netbait finesse, and T-mac...............why? Because they are cheap and they work. The new Yum Sharpshooter worm has been very good for me lately as well. Down sized Craw and creature baits, like the Pit Boss Jr, the small Net Bait B-bug or Paca craw, and 3.5" Yum Wooly bug are also great options, as are 4" and 5" senko/stick type baits. A guy I fish against in our local tournaments has been killing it recently with a 4" swim senko type bait on a shaky head recently, enough to make me go out and fart around with it a little, and it's pretty dang effective if they want something with some tail action. About the only bait I have tried on a shaky head that I couldn't stand, oddly, was a worm designed for shaky head fishing.........the Big Bites Squirrel Tail worm...it caught fish but man do the rock bass, perch and bluegills tare them all the heck up.
