IMHO the HMX is better than the St Croix Premeir at a lower price. The HMG is very close to a St Croix Avid, and also cost's less. I own both HMX's and HMG's, and both St Croix's as well.
The best year I ever had with jerkbaits was 2005, that was also the year I fished them on flurocarbon, Vanish to be exact. I hated that line with a passion, and went back to using copoly. for jerkbaits in 2006-2007. I noticed via my logs jerkbait catch rates dropped..........quite a bit. So this year I am back to flurocarbon, Trilene 100%, will it make a difference? Maybe? At least I hope so.
I have the St Croix Legend Tournament 6'6" Med. Fast. But it's my jerkbait rod, and will have fluro spooled with it. It may very well be an excellant topwater rod too, just I have yet to use it..............so I don't know. I"ll try it with a reel spooled with copoly.
I brand new rod snapped the first time out on the first fish caught? Could happen to any rod, reguardless of mfg., but some how I think you would have a new rod free of charge from St. Croix,Shimano, Fenwick, or G.Loomis, heck even Bass Pro Shops would give you a new rod, no fee, no questions asked.
Revo S is aluminum main frame and reel foot, brake side plate is plastic. Same with Curado B. No disrespect to reelmech, but he is not correct on this. I have 2 Revo S-lL's sitting in front of me, as we speak, both are aluminum. BTW Abu Garcia also states they are Aluminum frames.
To me the "ideal" top water rod is one that has a fast action so it does not load up when working baits, but also has a soft power to have some give and not tear treble hooks out. I don't think I have found the perfect rod yet. But I suspect the St Croix Avid or Legend Tournament 6'8" M/XF (labled as top water in the LT series) is close, and thats what I will be buying when I can for top waters.
I always used 14lb Trilene Sensation, this year I will use Trilene 100% Flurocarbon. I also use braid, 30lb Spiderwire Ultracast, when I am fishing the trap above heavy grass and need the extra feel and not stretch to "rip" the bait free from any grass it snags on.
I use mono backing on all my reels, spinning or casting, that have braid spooled on them. I also plan on doing so this year with any reels I put flurocarbon and copolymer on, as this line cost's more than mono. I usually use Trilene big game 15lb test, it is a large diameter line that fills the back of the spool up quick, and is cheap. Plus it's a darn good mono line that I don't mind using if I have to.
I don't know how my Citica 201D or Curado 101D will handle yet as they are new to me this year and I have yet to get out and use them. But on my Revo S-L I have 3 in, 3 out and leave them like that all the time and I have no issues. On my Daiwa's (magnaetic brakes) and Quantum's (centrifical), even though they are externaly adjustable, I usually leave them alone as well. I think I have the Daiwa's set at 4 or 5, and the Quantum Accurist's set at the middle (3 or 6 brakes, can't remember).
When I am fishing in our ponds I bring two. 1 7' Med. Spinning, and 1 7' MH casting. If I walk the banks of a small creek and have lots of brush to deal with I bring one, a 6' MH spinning.
Well 12 hours later and I feel fine. Make/modify/orginize baits? Clean/Lube reels? Make new log sheets? What do think I do for the first 3 months of winter LOL. Nothing wrong with kicking back with some medicine on a miserable winter night. I was in my house, and of age. Now I have to go out and clean the driveways.
...........BOOZE HAHAHAHAH. It's 25 out now and snowing. I am 1/2 way into a liter of Even Williams and I don't care........................till tommorow. But for tonight YEEHAW
I honestly don't know. All my combos for 08' are new, old rods got sold off, or paired with new/different reels. Old reels got sold, or, again paired with new rods.
I have followed KVD since I was a kid, he broke on to the scene when I first got serious about bass fishing.
I also like Timmy Horton, Greg Hackney, and Edwin Evers, they are all class acts that go out of there way to be nice to the fans at events.
From what I understand it basicly is two materials fused together. The top is glass the bottom is graphite. No stores around me have stocked any of the Elite Techs yet, I can't wait to get a look at them.
The only reason I have almost all the colors under the sun is because I am a tackle junkie.
I catch 99.9% of my fish on these colors of soft plastics or jigs:
Green Pumpkin
Black/Blue
Watermelon w/Red Flake
Red Shad
Junebug
For Spinnerbaits:
White
Chartruse and White
Cranks, Jerks and top waters:
Silver/black
Gold/Black
Firetiger
Red Craw
Perch
