  1. That's the only reason I bought a fryer! I warn you though once you start frying your own fish, store bought and/or restaurant fish Fry's will be a thing of the past.
  2. I don't know if this deal was exclusive to my local Gander Mtn. in Rochester NY or not, but I was able to grab a NIB Team Daiwa Fuego-L casting reel for $74. It was marked down to $99, plus they have a sale going on that all clearance items are an extra 25% off. They still had a few LH's after I bought mine, plus several RH's. I didn't need a new reel but I couldn't pass up a deal like that.
  3. I don't have any heartbreaking stories of huge lunkers that got away, for sure I have had some big ones get off, but I also have put some big ones in the boat. It stings for sure, but it's all part of the game and it seems like the next good one I do put in the boat I quickly forget the last one I lost...............but I know my day is coming. The one fish (or in this case fish's) that still stick with me and stink are apir of 4+ lb LMB, and one 3lb SM that I lost during a tournament. It was just a small sunday open tourn. on my home lake, only about 20 boats and I was on the fish 2 win. I had a stretch of docks that was holding and coughing up good fish for 2 weeks, and no one else was in there. Wind was blowing like a mad man and dock fishing was a chore. I had all three fish to the boat before they got off, and the SM was even heading towards the net. My first mistake that I realized was using braid. I usually fish docks with braid and it works great, but in this wind it blew a HUGE bow in my line and by the time I felt the bites and set the hook I was getting poor hooksets, I should have used fluorocarbon that sinks and had a more direct conection to my jig. Second mistake, after losing those fish I lost my cool, and left that area, not to find good fish again, ended up with a whopping 7lbs for 5 fish from another spot. The winners moved in after I left in a huff and pulled 15lbs out of there. That will stick with me for a while.
  4. I am not a big fan of the longer length, and higher powerd Mojo's, the 7' H power, fast action is very tip heavy and balances poorly with most of the popular reels available. And the problem just gets worse with the 7'6" and 7'11" rods in that series. But the 7' MH, Moderate action crankbait rod is fantastic, light, balanced well with most any reel I have put on it. It's actually the opposite of most St Croixs, in that it's a little less powerfull init's rating than marked. I don't like it for really big deep divers like DT16's and such, but for GP cranking it's fantastic. I was at BPS yesterday and one rod I was really impressed with in that price range was the Falcon Bucoo, I know I will be getting a few soon. I was unimpressed with the W&M Skeet Reese rods as well as the Abu Vendetta's.
  5. Personaly I wouldn't target bass or walleye with the same rod as I would panfish. Then again I only target panfish through the ice, but catch bass while doing so, and my rod has handled them OK, but I have broke a few off, but I am sure I wouldn't catch nearly as many light biting crappies, bluegills, or perch on a stiffer rod more suitable for bass. I like as light of an action as possable, what I used last season and really liked, and will continue to use this year is the H.T. 21" Noodle Action rod in the Polar lite series. Really light tip so no spring bobber is needed, but stiff enough that you can jig with it without having the rod flop around like limp twig. Plenty of power for big perch, gills, and crappies, and I have subdued a few 2lb bass on it as well. It's a very senstive little rod, and best of all pretty darn inexpensive, I think they are only $15
  6. 1/4 and 5/16 oz. jigs = St. Croix Legend Tournament 7' Med. power, fast action 3/8 up to 3/4 oz. = St Croix Avid 7' MH power, fast action 3/4 oz and 1 oz.= St Croix Legend Tournament 7'6" MH power, moderate fast action "pitiching" rod.
  7. I have a Citica 201D, 201E, and 2 Revo S-L's, pus an SX-L, and STX-L. I would take the citica 201E over all of them, the the 201D, then Revo S, toss a coin on the SX and STX. Other than size and weight I can detect no noticable performance differnaces in the E vs D, they both cast smaller baits better than the Revo, and both reels feel very powerfull, I have no trouble cranking DT16's or DD22's with either Citica. If I try that with a Revo it feel like I am trying to pull the plug on the lake. Drags are more powerfull on the Revo's, but for bass fishing the Shimano's have plenty, never understood the need for 20+ lbs of drag in a bass reel, even flipping or pitching with 50lb braid in heavy slop the Shimano's offer plenty. That beeing said, IF you find a good deal on Revo S grab it, but at full retail the Citica E is not only cheaper but better.
  8. Keep drinking that kool-aid
  9. I have tried Spiderwire stealth, Spiderwire Ultra Cast, Suffix, Fireline Braid, and Power Pro. I use Power Pro, it does everything I need/want a braid to do, is a quality first rate line, and (except for Stealth) saves me a few $$ over the others.
  10. I have had several telescopic rods, and still use a couple. They are a must for me because the rod locker on my boat only holds 7' rods and I would rather not have a bunch of 7'+ rods lying all over they deck when I am not using them because they won't fit in the locker. I am sure a 1 peice rod is the better way to go, but I have never felt the telescopic rods were any weaker, maybe senstivity suffers a bit, but even that is not all that noticable.
  11. The Citica is a great reel, but I think a Shimano reel on a Abu Garcia rod is just wrong But thats just me, I would'nt put a Revo on a Cumara either.
  12. The first thing you want to look for is a heavy reel. Why? I have that 7' H Mojo, and it is one tip heavy rod. It never felt right with a Revo, Citica E, or any of my Daiwa Advantages. When I finaly paired it with a Citica D (at almost 10ozs.) it seemed to balance out better, but IMHO still needs a balancing kit. In all honesty unless your going to be pulling BIG fish out of the nastiest, heaviest cover around, I would get a different rod. A 7 MH' St Croix will handle alot of flipping and pitiching situations just fine and be a lot more versitile, and more comfortable to fish with all day. About the the only thing I use that 7' H Mojo for is punching thick mats with 1 oz. + baits, and dragging frogs over top of the same stuff. It should be labled just "Slop" rod, any one who can walk a frog with that pool cue for more than 15 mins. is a better man than me.
  13. Fireline is not a flourocarbon, there are 2 types of Fireline, one is the orginal fused, the other is braided, and other than that I don't know much about Fireline because I don't use it. As to your original question, I have used Bass Pro Shops XPS, Berkley Vanish, Berkley Trilene 100% Flouro., Seaguar Carbon pro, and Triple Fish flourocarbon. I like Trilene 100% the best, and it's all I use now. XPS is also a good line, and I can't really complain about Vanish or Carbon Pro either. I know alot of guys hate Vanish, but I have not had any trouble with it. I hated the Triple fish. Weak knots, no abrasion or shock resistance, and unmanageable. Trilene 100% offers the best compromise between the traits I look for in Flourcarbon. IMHO it's the strongest line of the bunch, but it's also the thickest in diameter as well (exp. 6lb Trilene = 8lb Vsnish in diameter). Ties and holds knots far better than Vanish and Carbon Pro, has more stretch than XPS, but also more abrasion resistance, and seems to be middle of the road as far as managability. Zero issues on casting equipment, I wish it was a little limper on spinning gear, but it handles fine.
  14. I was always a big fan of Daiwa and Shimano 2000 and 2500 size reels, and/or the Pflueger xx30/xx35 size reels. But recently I bouht a Shimano Sahara 3000, same frame size and weight as a 2500, but the spool is bigger, and with fluorocarbon line it has made a big differance in how it handles, not that the other sizes were a nightmare, but it seem like line twist, memory, and other problems have decreased to the point that I don't even treat line on the 3000 reel with KVD anymore, where as if I didn't spray KVD on fluoro. that was spooled on 2000 and 2500 reels it needed more attention paid to managing twist/memory etc.
  15. The Mojo on your list is "extra-fast", so it will also feel whippy. Rod selection is a very personal thing, but if it were me I'd be looking for a fast-tip on a med hvy blank. Roger Have you ever fished an Extra Fast St. Croix? They are anything other than "whippy", that is if your defination of "whippy" and mine are the same. When I think of a whippy rod, I think of something like an Ugly Stick that has no backbone and is extreamly moderate in action, so much so that it shakes like a noodle. An ex. fast St. Croix is quite the oposite, it's pretty stiff, and has just the slighest amount of tip action.
  16. I have 2 a 6735 and a 6730. The 6735 is going on 5 years old now, and has been used hard. It is on my dock skipping rod, and usually has 30lb Power Pro on it. I do nothing for maint. to this reel trying to kill it so I can put a shimano or daiwa on that rod. The only thing I do is after the seaon is take the handle off and put a few drops of oil in the bearings on each side, back the drag off, and oil the bearing on the line roller. I did replace the line roller last year as 4 years of use with braid started to wear the finish of it, not groove it, just the finish. Yeah the bail is a little sloppier than it was new, but heck it was a $60 reel thats lasted 5 years, and been used with braid almost exclusivly. LOL I think I just talked myself into taking better care of it, or buying another when it craps the bed.
  17. Thanks guys, now the waivering begins, I'll probably make up my mind and then change it no less than ten times between now and when I pull the trigger , But at least I know what reels I want to get a new Chronarch D, or maybe a Revo Premier, or a Zillion, or a Core. LOL but seriously, I know Raul has said he can't feel much diff. between IMX or GLX, does anyone else feel this way, or actually the opposite, that there's a noticable difference. I know it's apples to oranges, but I wonder if this kind of like the Avid vs. Leg. Tourny. thing I have with St Croix. I can not for the life of me detect a great difference between the two in sensitivty, weight yes.........but only slightly.
  18. I do it myself. Last trip of the year I mix stabilzer with the gas and run that trough the motor, then I drive the boat up on the trailer, leave the outboard running while it's on the trailer but still in the water, spray fogging oil in the air intake till it stalls. Take her home put it in the garage, trim the motor all the way down to drain any water out and leave it down all winter. Drain and refill lower unit, drain/refill motor oil ( I have a 4 stroke). Change oil and fuel filters, change spark plugs, and while the plugs are out spray a quick shot of fogging oil in the cylinder head. Put plugs back in pull the kill switch out and crank the motor over a few times to get the fogging oil I put in the head moved around abit. Put the shroud on the motor, clean/vac the boat, grease trailer hubs, take batteries out and put in basement, make sure livewell is clean/drained, crank the trailer jack up so any water in the boat runs out the back drain, put the cover on the boat, and get ready to ice fish. In the spring about a week or 2 before ice out I take it to the marina and have them check it out make sure it's ok for the season, comes back with the thunbs up every time, this year they will change the water pump impeller.
  19. I am pretty sure I am going to go with the MBR843C and the MBR844C over any more St Croix's, now the hard part IMX vs GLX ? I can't find any info on what guides are used on either rod.
  20. For those of you that have these rods, how does it compare to a St Croix Legend Tournament and/or Legend Elite? I would like to add 2 new rods to my collection this winter, I love my St Croix LT's but am less than crazy about the split grips on the new ones, and I have not had any luck finding good reasonably priced used LT's with the full rear+forgrip. Both would be used as Jig, Senko, and/or Worm rods.
  21. I have a 7' M power, fast action Techna AV spinning rod, as well as a St Croix Avid in the same length/power/action. The Avid is a touch heavier, and fishes a bit more "powerfull" than the Techna. I can honestly not give the nod to one over the other in sensitivity. And...... this is just me...........I like the Avid better.
  22. My 07' Tracker Pt170 will hold 7' rods just fine, and I have had up to 14 rods in the locker.
  23. St Croix Legend Tournament rods, $149.99 on clearance when they went to the split grip's, plus 40% off of that because of a friends discount. I got them for $89.99. I bought 3 at that price not to mention the 6 Avids that were on sale for $99, that I got for $59 with the same "discount"
  24. The 8th was THE day to be out on Erie, a friend and I spent the late morning/early afternoon out there and put over 50 in the boat between us, no giants, but nothing under 3, and each of us got a mid 5. Tubes and or dropshot, didn't matter they bit both. Funny thing is we were smack dab in the middle of a 30+ boat tournament (we were not in it) and every one was catching fish, on.................about a 2 square mile area, elbow to elbow we were stacked in there and so were the fish. Only place in the world for SM like it........and the fish are just freaks as well.
  25. Why not? For the same $$ as a Revo S you can get a Citica E, which is every bit as good. I know some of the Shimano snobs here can put people off, but don't let it keep you away from a fantastic reel. BTW I own several Revo's, several Shimano's, quite a few Diawa's and Quantum's, as well as a few Pfluegers. Each brand has reels I love, as well as dislike. But back to your original question, if you can find a Revo S for less than the $129 many places are now charging for them grab it and run, if not, well..............you don't want to know what I think ;D
