  1. I have a soft spot in my heart for Fenwick fiberglass (the finest in it's day) and would be all over this deal if I were still into fly fishing. This would be a great outfit for someone wanting to try flyfishing, fiberglass has a softer more forgiving feel than graphite.and in my opinion is easier for a beginner, Trout and panfish size flies and poppers would be perfect for this outfit. And it comes in an aluminum tube and flannel sleeve so it wont be damaged shipping. The bait monkey is barking in my ear but I haven't touched a fly rod all year.
  2. If it is catching on the tip top guide you could try changing to a larger size ring on that guide. I use back to back nail knots, a fly tackle knot. Gives a reliable compact knot. I make the leader long enough so the knot goes into the reel and have no problems.
  3. That's funny!
  4. Great looking jigs! It sure can be addicting.
  5. I've gotten a couple orders from Besotted and have been totally impressed. That popper with the tail prop and belly blade looks like I need 3 of those!
  6. Very good looking jig, a fish catcher for sure. I remember way back Lindy/Little Joe sold a similar jig, instead of marabou the tail was saddle hackles, it was called the Canadian jig fly. Lots of walleye were caught on those around here,
  7. are you sure it's a fish?
  8. congrats, get out there and have some fun!
  9. And it hit a lure wanting to stuff something else down it's gullet?
  10. just got some of their poppers and fished them a little this weekend. did not catch anything on any topwater so results don't matter. The 8139 with tail propeller and Colorado blade dangling between the hooks really looked good in the water, could slow crank it with the prop and blade kicking and it would give a nice pop with a twitch. Got an 8088 popper I wish I chose a bigger one but sometimes a little change in size is good. Both the 8088 and splash popper performed very well, unfortunately no fish were harmed in the testing of these baits.
  11. While the fg knot is very small diameter it is rather long and stiff, my rods are mostly micro guides and the fg knot catches on the guides pretty bad especially the tip top. One rod I changed the tip guide to a larger diameter and that helped. Instead of the fg knot, I tie back to back nail knots, similar if not the same as back to back uni knot. Slightly larger diameter but much shorter and more compact. I leave it long enough to go on the reel and have no issues with the knot catching on the cast.
  12. I like the thunk when they grab a jig.
  13. that's a great idea! I'm gonna go check out my shrink wrap selection right now.
  14. could you get a small scale and compare the weights of the single vrs treble hooks?
  15. Grindstone Lake is right across the road from me, last week sure had some rough weather and I'm glad you had a good time. Did you get into town for the Musky festival?
  16. Glad to see you getting back in the game. I get what you say about recycled metal and micro fractures.
  17. I work in a cabinet shop, we have a resaw ( a large heavy duty band saw) that takes 1 1/4 inch wide blades and the blades occasionally break, could be good material for a fillet knife. If you would like, I would send you some pieces. could also send a few walnut scraps.
  18. I grew up fishing with Johnson 710's and sabre's. they had an interesting drag system. If you held the handle or continued to crank it was direct drive no drag, as soon as you let go of the handle, line would slip out according to how you set the drag. Had it's advantages but if you panicked on a large fish it was gone. The Johnson Sabre had a larger diameter spool that oscillated. It casted pretty good but it was kind of large and heavy. The Garcia Abumatic also had an oscillating spool and a tighter drag while cranking. I much preferred these over the Mitchel 300's and 308's and I didn't have much else for options.
  19. smaller than the largest guide but larger than the next.
  20. very good, you have an eye for detail.
  21. One of my all time favorite lures, mostly caught walleye and crappie, but has caught musky, carp, pike, and bass, even one bullhead.
  22. if it ain't chartreuse it ain't no use
  23. my go to crappie lure is a beetle spin, last year I did pretty good with some of the z-man microfinesse stuff.
  24. please share, what answer did you come up with?
  25. Several years ago I talked to an old timer who fished muskies in the fall with large suckers and no hook. He would somehow tie onto the sucker in the middle of the body, he would allow the muskie to swallow the sucker and the sucker would turn sideways in the gut and the muskie would not be able to spit it out.
