  2. abu garcia 5501 on a 6' MH berkley bionix, 12lb test line
  3. thanks for the tips guys, i will let you know how i do.... i am sure shad and such would work better, but i have yet to see anything swimming in these ponds other than gills, bass, and turtles....i am sure the bass would prefer something else, but if there isnt anything else there, like someone said, they gotta eat....just thought it would be something different to try Cliff P.S. it IS legal in texas....you can use any non-game fish for bait, and blue gills arent considered a game fish
  4. i have been fishing a couple of small ponds recently, and have caught several fish on various baits...i would like to try a live blue gill.....there are tons of them in the ponds so i imagine the bass feed on them...i called texas parks and rec today to make sure it was legal...it is...so i was thinking i could catch some gills on hook and worm....how do you rig/fish a live gill...say maybe a 3"-5" one? hook size? how do you hook it on the hook? use it under a bobber? any tips would be much appreciated thanks Cliff

  6. the "day job" thread made me think of this for some reason...tell us about your furry/slimy/scaley friends that we all love so much...feel free to include a picture or funny story about them these are my cats...emmy and delilah...emmy we got from a lady and delilah was adpoted from the shelter....now....we were told emmy was a girl cat...hence the name...and when cats are small and furry like this one it is really hard to tell....anyway the first trip to the vet we found out emmy, was in fact a boy! how embarassing....so now we have a boy cat named emmy...we tell everyone now that it is short for emerson or emmit...lol ;D emmy me and delilah emmy having a drink Cliff
  7. i wash cars for a rental car company at the waco regional airport....i took this job when i first moved to TX, gotta pay the bills...as soon as i am able to get a nother vehicle i am outta there, it bites. while i was in MN i went to school for building construction...so hopefully soon i will be back to that....i worked as a carpenter for 1.5 years before i left MN and i loved every minute of it, except when i hit my finger with the hammer or stepped on a nail that someone should have bent over ;D Cliff
  8. well i have been looking them over, i think i might go with a LV-0 and a fat BDS Marty 1.2 or a moonassault CB-001 havent made my mind up on colors yet thanks Cliff
  9. i had this problem last night...we had been killin em recently on *** sticks and the like and topwaters...last night we got only a few dinks right when we got there then nothing....i threw everything in my box(dosent take long i dont have much)tried a jig,t-rig,spinnerbait,topwater... then i tied on a crank....caught five bass one real small one, the crank wouldnt even fit in its mouth, three at a lb or so and one was around 2 lbs..then we left...we had had a storm move through the area that morning and i think that may have had something to do with it...it was fun and satisfying for me, since i rarely use cranks...but i think i might throw them a bit more often now ;D Cliff
  10. dont sweat it man, it will come, take all these guys advice....i have fished for years, but not for largemouth bass....i moved to texas and found this site....and thanks to all the great info and people here(especially avid ;D) i catch bass almost everytime i wet a hook..like they said, read, ask questions, and before you know it you will be posting a thread called "my personel best" good luck Cliff
  11. yeah i used them alot for walleye in MN...looks like and ordinary round ball head jig, but it floats Cliff
  12. i have returned several rods to walmart over the years, and every time i walked out with a brand new one Cliff
  13. i think i am going to make another purchase of LC baits....i have been having pretty good luck with the two i have(fat BDS, pointer78 DD, both american shad) i fish mostly small ponds(and one larger lake if the water level ever goes down) and was wondering if you had a certain style/color you like and would recommend, i would like to buy two differnt styles than what i have and also in different colors...the main forage in the ponds is blue gills, sunfish etc etc...the ponds are weedy but it is mostly a few feet under the water so shallow runners is best....any thoughts? thanks Cliff
  14. Has fishing improved your life, or has it created some personal difficulties? when i was a teenager i got into some trouble with the law...i was put on a court ordered curfew...9pm on school night and 10pm on weekends, my parents were very strict about this and enforced it...if i broke the curfew i went to jail...so what was i to do? couldnt go out and party and raise hell, and my folks had a nice place on one of the finger lakes in upstate NY...so i started fishing...didnt know what i was doing really...dad bought me a diawa reel and a shimano rod...and some assorted lures....i have to say after landing my first smallmouth bass, that was all she wrote, i was a fisherman for sure, and havent been able to stop since...in NY i mostly fished for smallies and other panfish, in MN i fished for walleye, pike, and muskie...now i am in TX and LMB is my target....in my senior year of high school there was one day all the seniors skipped(senior skip day) school and went to a party..well i did skip school, but i went to the lake, on the weekends my friends would be headed to a kegger in the woods, i went to the lake....for my graduation my dad got me a 1952 14' aluminum row boat....it had a big dent in it and a hole in the bottom, he pounded out the dent, and repaired the hole, put on a 7.5 hp merc, painted it red...thats when the "The Red Torpedo" was born...so to answer the above question..has fishing improved my life....yes. ;D Cliff
  15. dude, that thing could eat my PB for lunch!! nice fish, way to go! Cliff
  16. great interview...i really enjoyed it...good job LBH!!! Cliff
  17. i have never used it, but today i bought some YUM crawfish scent...i will let you know later if i think it makes a difference
  18. i get most of my stuff at walmart...if they dont have it i go to academy...but it seems they dont have much either so now i have been ordering online...made my first order from *** today...just a small order but i cant wait for it to get here!! Cliff
  19. i like to stick to brands that have worked for me...here is what is in my box...i can name it all cuz there isnt much ;D cranks 1 LC pointer DD 78 american shad 1 LC fat BDS american shad 1 rapala DT4 black/silver 1 rapala original black/silver * topwater 1 zara spook Jr. black/silver 1 pop R black/silver plastics 2 pack 7" power worms watermelon candy * 2 pack 7" power worms blue fleck 1 pack wave tiki sticks watermelon 1 pack wave tiki sticks sweet potatoe pie jigs/creatures 3 booyah bug black/blue 3 booyah bug PB&J * berkley sabre tail bug(use these for trailers and by themselves)watermelon & blue/black spinnerbait/buzzbait 1 booyah 1/4 oz white 1 TD buzzbait black * terminal Gammy hooks 3/0 EWG 3/16 oz bullet weights camera scale/tape measure multitool(this goes on my belt when i get to the water) the * indicates baits that i havent caught fish on yet...when i go to the store i normally know exactly what i want...i go get it and leave...not much of a shopper-arounder Cliff
  20. yeah like i said i am thinking about doing this..not only would i be traveling light, i could really focus on one or two techniques rather then a whole bunch of different stuff...we have been having good luck lately with watermelon tiki sticks....so maybe i will leave them at home next time and try something else... ;D i have only caught one fish on a jig....so i think i will focus on that and only bring my jig box..or jusy my cranks/spinnerbaits. thanks for the info guys, much appreciated Cliff
  21. so do you guys cart around like 3 rod/reel setups while bank fishing? thats what i have been doing and it is starting to suck a little bit..or do you just bring one? i am thinking i may just stick to one...makes walking and casting much easier....if you do only carry one set up...what do you bring? something that can be used for all/most applications? or just one for what you plan to fish? i was thinking about making each trip different...like one time i say ok i am going to only use cranks and spinnerbaits...so i bring my Med rod and only my cranks and spinnerbaits...leave everything else home and really focus on what i am using...or, ok today only jigs and t-rigs...then bring only the appropriate rod/reel/bait...the only problem with that is if the fish arent biting on such and such a bait....and thats all i brought....what do i do? i mean if i have only my MH rod with braided line and nothing is biting and i decide to throw a crank....i dont think cranks and braid are a good combo, right? so now due to the one rod/reel combo i brought with me that particular day, i am limited to what i can fish i have 3 set up...2 casting and 1 spinning...the spinning is a MH casting are MH and M...i use the M for cranks spinnerbaits....the spinning for weightless stuff and the MH casting for jigs/t-rigs....but i have to say, when your walking a golf course hitting several differnt ponds, hauling around 3 rods is a pain your thoughts? Cliff
  22. shower shoes!!!(flip flops) the dorm bathrooms can get kinda nasty! where i went to school the RA's could "key in" and open your door if they thought something was going on....so the big joke when you came to someones room was to say..."RA keying in" then everyone would freak out and try to hide the beer....then they would open the door and it was just their buddy...haha right? well one time someone did this and we figured it was a buddy...so we didnt hide anything and opened the door...it WAS an RA!!! everyone got busted...good times..enjoy it Cliff
  23. so your buddy calls and says "we are going to lake XYZ tomorrow, wanna go?" you say "yes", of course...so what do you do the night before to prepare for your outing? do you prerig all your rods? or do you wait untill you are on the water? check the weather? if you havent fished the lake before do you research it? pray to the fish god? do you have a secret ritual you perform? i got this call last night, so today i rigged 3 rods...one for weightless senko, one with a small shallow crank, and one with a zara spook jr. i checked my box to make sure i had all the stuff i need, baits, camera, pliers, scale...and today i will look for topics on here that may relate to the type/technique i plan to use this evening(i dont have any "niagra" so i will try deadsticking tonight) ;D so i was just curious how you guys/gals prep for a trip, if you have a boat i am sure there is much more involved Cliff
  24. yeah i actually have been deadstickin em for alot longer than that....just let it sit out there and chat with my bud or just enjoy the surrounding nature...the last one i caught must have sat there for over a minute....then i saw the slightest line movement...i really didnt think it was a fish...but like they say, when i doubt set the hook...so i did!
