  1. I fish alone because nobody cares about anything I do.
  2. Just loaded the reel with 10 pound mono. I don't remember not being able to see the line when I was 10? First cast is Friday. I sincerely hope I loaded it correct; no time to practice cast at home Thursday. ? First cast will be first test!
  3. perhaps I should trade back for 10 or 8 pound then? Thanks!
  4. New guy here fishing for first time in 40 years. Purchased a Shimano Stradic 3000. I also have 12 pound mono in a 300 yard spool. the 10 pound capacity for this reel is 140 yards.... I assume 12 pound will be less? How do I know how much to put from a 300 yard spool? Is there a maximum capacity of line edge that can identify this? I am sure 12 pound will be less than 10 pound, I doubt I am going to actually be casting or trolling anywhere near 140 yards ever. I do know, however, to leave room at top of reel spool, something like 1/8"? Bought 300 yards of Sufix mainly so I could cut extra for knot tying practice. I have this Friday OFF work for first cast since I was 13; can't wait. Thanks!
  5. For the past 22 years, I have been driving passed the 4 massive wind turbines that the county put up. I have kept a mental note of how many are spinning, how many are not, and when. My non-expert observation is, on any given breezy day, if the county is lucky, 1 might be spinning. I can't remember the last decade I saw all 4 going at once. I don't see electric vehicles taking over until electric producing technology has caught up.
  6. Double Digit, I was always disappointed as a kid for all the bottom feeding carp, drum, and catfish I caught. Maumee very very close... got to start casting somewhere I guess.
  7. A Shimano 3000 spin, a Shimano spin rod, Mono line. Soft shiny fish like lures with shiny jigheads. The Maumee is very muddy. My guess is make lure and jighead as bright, yet prey fishlike, as possible. Will start fishing where North Turkeyfoot creek enters into river. Turkeyfoot is one of the larger creeks that flows into river. I guess where creek and river meet might be a "hole" of deeper water. Maumee wide yet not exactly deep there. Where I live is Dam to Dam... not lake Erie to first dam. Also there, probably many sunken logs and underwater hazards that might be small mouth?
  8. I have actually been "scouting" Maumee River spots for the last 22 years (I commute parallel to the river). I also thought to myself... that looks like a great spot should I ever fish again. What got me back into fishing? My wife and I were watching Toledo news coverage of Maumee River Walleye Run, I told her all my age 9-13 fishing stories and how much I loved fishing as a kid. She seriously asked, "why did you stop?" I seriously considered this for a month; here I am.
  9. Been slowly getting gear together. Got some basic tackle, reel, and rod. Haven't fished since I was 13. Can't get things put together until June 1 however. Been scouting Maumee River locations. Unfortunately, I live between Grand Rapids, Ohio dam and Defiance, Ohio dam... not exactly game fish territory. Have to get my feet wet somewhere before better, farther, locations are visited. Sorry for mundane post.
  10. Kicker.... um, what is the correct position? Up or down???
  11. I have a spinning reel, waiting for a rod... I have watched a few videos about attaching line to the reel and I think I have the knot down. When attaching the line, does the "loop" of line have to start at the bottom of Spool? It is sometimes hard to tell from the videos. Thanks!
  12. Dink, All I have to go by are some decent videos of fishing at Metzger March east of Toledo. The guy pulled some nice Bass, but small Pike were landed about half the time; I'm sure there could be larger ones. Yes, I will use a steel leader there... just to be safe.
  13. I was thinking Plastic, not metal. The tacklebox I used as a kid in the 70s was given to me by the old man across the street. It was probably from the 1940s and full of 1940s gear, heavy... stolen recently. I'll consider suggestions... maybe a Dollar General bag!
  14. Does anyone use a regular toolbox as a tacklebox? The one I use at work seems a good size, one strong easy latch, nice size tray, and two divider trays on lid that seem to latch tight. It also seems very sturdy for tossing around, or dropping, or falling in my truck. Your thoughts?
  15. Thank you everyone for all your advice. Reconsidering 7' heavy pole for a lighter 7' or smaller pole; as many of you mentione. I should also mention I found a shimano stradic ci4+ spinning reel 3000. They seemed sold out everywhere; I feel lucky for MSRP! I bought it, heck, I'm 51 with a good job, why not. Will keep monitoring this post and keep on searching old and new posts.
  16. Another thing I have just learned, is the Shimano Stradic CI4+ Spinning Reel 3000 is not available anywhere... hope the St Croix rod is? Ugh
  17. I plan on fishing Metzger Marsh near Toledo. From what I've read and seen on youtube, the marsh and lake Erie portion seem infested with small Pike? None seem extremely large, but toothy small ones. I will highly consider the Flouro then over the Mono, great suggestion (they didn't have that when I was 10... I'm 51 now). Been seriously looking at leaders as well, neglected to mention that. Also got set up a two day camping fishing trip at a secluded private 48 acre Bass filled lake, and I can borrow a row boat. Can't wait until September... such a break from work. I will be the only person camping and on the lake for sure!
  18. After searching this forum, which really works well compared to other forums, I've decided to go with the following. I plan on fishing for Bass and maybe Pike. Shimano Sedona 2500 St Croix Premier 7' (medium heavy-fast) Some sort of 12# mono Thanks! Look forward to your comments. Unfortunately can't get this until the first week of June... hope I actually can find this stuff not on back order!
  19. Thank you for the welcomes. I thought I would be asking 100s of questions, but the Search bar on this forum is very good (unlike other forums). I'm sure I will have some. Thanks again.
  20. Hello, I used to love fishing when I was about age 9-13 on the Maumee River. Zebco was my equipment and what my very nice uncle gave to me. I caught plenty of drum, catfish, and some kind of very small brown bluegill looking fish; always was disappointed. Once I waded into the rapids of the Maumee River for the walleye run in jeans and tennis shoes; all I managed to consistently catch were the waders of the fishermen in front of me, I caught plenty of them! Thanks to my parents, I was always allowed either one subscription to Field and Stream, or Sports Afield. My 12 year old bucket list fish was a Musky... so many great magazine stories. I will leave all my 100s of questions for the appropriate forums. Thank you.
