  1. This^^^ I think that $100 is the perfect combination for price and performance. I have the Lew's TP1X casting rod for jigs and texas rigs. It is light, sensitive, strong, and great looking. I match it up with a $100 Revo X and can say with certainty there is no need for anything more expensive. I do agree with other guys saying that when using moving baits like the spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, etc a really inexpensive rod will work just as well as the high end ones.
  2. Scheels in Eden Prairie and Fleet Farm in Lakeville, MN get my vote for large stores. Sportsman's warehouse in Coon Rapids is solid and has a large selection also. On a local level, Prior Lake bait & tackle on lower Prior is a great small tackle shop, though the selection is mainly meant for supplying stuff you might've forgotten at home and not for actual shopping. Overall a good place, I mainly go there for ice fishing and they have many types of live minnows as well, which is nice. I used to go to Camping world in Lakeville because they had crazy cheap minnows and a decent selection of tackle, but lately they stopped selling live bait and their fishing shelves are almost bare.
  3. These people make ice fishing in the twin cities so annoying. I try to get at least 1 hour away if not more.
  4. Hi all, I am thinking about trying to buy some basic electronics (Humminbird pirahna max 4 or Lowrance hook 4x) to put on my fishing kayak. My question is how would I go about installing those and what other things do I need for power/mounting it? I have heard of electronics installation kits and I do have an accessory mounting track on the kayak (Lifetime teton angler 100). Please advise, thanks
  5. The only thing that I would change is that i would use 30 lb braid for the senko, spinnerbaits, and swim jig and other topwaters rather than mono. Then i would put 30-40 lb braid on the heavy rod for your frogs
  6. Here's how I do it: Frogs, Jigs, Texas rigs, topwater - 30 lb braid Finesse (think ned rig, wacky, shakey head) - straight 15 lb braid or 15 lb braid to 8 lb fluoro leader Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits - 12 to 15 lb fluoro Crankbaits, jerkbaits - 10 lb fluoro
  7. I still get excited over the littlest things in bass fishing. One footlong bass is enough to make me happy. Right now I am anxiously tracking my cabela's package containing a new baitcast reel :)
  8. At what temps do smallies come up shallow and at what temps would you expect them to be deeper?
  9. I do try that but I usually fish with braid which makes that very hard
  10. Hey, I am a beginner fisherman so I was wondering while shore fishing, where do you cut the line when you get snagged?
  11. Just curious, I was wondering when you all were introduced to fishing and who introduced and taught you the basics? My biggest mentors so far have been my dad, my neighbor, and various people on youtube and here on bass resource. I first started fishing around the age of 14
  12. I am 16 and I got into fishing when i was about 14 or so. My biggest largemouth was a 20 incher that i would guess to be around 5 lbs. I caught it last year (15 years old) I am still kicking myself for not bringing a camera. I have a ton of pictures of 4.5 lbers but sadly not one of my pb
  13. I nose hook them on a dropshot rig but I have not used them while fishing from shore, as I usually fish for smallmouth on offshore points from a canoe (basically I've never had the bluegill problem) I have a feeling though that they would be killer on a 1/8 oz shakey head
  14. I like the Frabill trout net for netting bass in a kayak. It is only about 13 inches deep but it has handled largies pushing 5 pounds easily. I've only used it on about 5 trips, but it feels sturdy and I am very happy with it. It is the same net that NDYakAngler on youtube uses and it works pretty well for the smallmouths that he catches. Also I don't know if you fish from a boat, shore, or kayak. If you fish from a normal bass boat I wouldn't get this net. The handle is very short
  15. yeah. I do fine weightless or on a wacky rig, but when it comes to adding a tungsten weight, I've lost my magic
  16. Look up NDYakAngler on youtube. He is a perfect example of this type of fisherman. As for myself, I buy more than I need when I really could just get away with senkos, a spinnerbait, a frog, and a jig
  17. believe or not, it is a texas rigged senko with weight for me. I killed the bass on it for a week or so, and now I throw a weightless t-rig a lot more because it sinks slower. Maybe I should try fishing the weighted rig deeper, instead of next to heavy slime and weeds
  18. Couple packs of zoom finesse worms, some senkos, trout spinners, and 2 livetarget frogs. Also a 4 pack of Plano boxes because the bait monkey made me run out of room in my tackle boxes
  19. kudos to you to have the bravery to bite powerbait. Nice fish! I like the netbait paca craw chunks for strike king bitsy bug jigs, but I've never used a bitsy flip jig, so I dont know if they would work as well
  20. I thought that I was alone with this problem. I tried to fish a frog yesterday and it was miserable. The cottonwood seeds would get stuck on my line and get reeled into my baitcaster. When I would cast they would clump up in the line guide of the casting reel and cause backlash. I can't wait for rain.......
  21. You do not feel bites on a wacky rig with your rod, but with your line. Hi viz yellow braid if you want to use a fluoro leader, but I prefer straight 15 lb braid. It's ultra-sensitive and I don't really notice a difference between it and a leader.
  22. 2nd trip: didn't get skunked, but got 'dinked'. I only caught 2 bass, both under 8". Switched to crappie fishing halfway through and caught some nice ones, including a few good bluegills as well.
  23. Watermelon red flake
  24. I went fishing on the opener at a small local pond pretty early in the morning. I was out in my kayak. I thought that spinnerbaits and chatterbaits would do the trick, but the only thing that I could get a bite on was a wacky rig. I caught only two bass, but they were pretty good sized, measuring 18" and 19". Used a 6'6" M Berkley cherrywood spinning rod with a Daiwa revros spinning reel and 20 lb braid. The wacky rig consisted of a black and blue Googan lunker log and a VMC Neko hook. I caught the bigger one in the shade of some overhanging tree branches, and the other one next to a submerged stump.
  25. For me, kayak fishing is not uncomfortable, but I'm only 16 so what do I know? Its different than being able to target specific spots like you can on shore or in a boat, so I pick a general area and drift with the wind making long casts into fishy-looking spots. I like how a kayak is affordable (I am a poor highschooler) I never go kayaking on days that have bad weather in the forecast. I have more fun catching only a few fish on a nice day than going after fish in rough weather.
