  1. I would go to the state park and wouldn’t worry about the time, there are still bass on beds pretty much everywhere in Texas. I don’t know which park you are going to but some of them get ShareLunker stockings, so you may have a shot at a new PB. In another few weeks, the shad spawn should begin (~75 water temp) and I personally would want to be on the water early when that starts.
  2. I’m confused, are you referring to a vertical v. horizontal line tie or something else?
  3. I think folks knew what he meant…I’ve done that many times. It was more about the question. The OP actually asked 2 questions: one was the title of the post and the second was in the body of the post. I think a lot of the early answers were focused on the title question. I agree…you can certainly use a more simplified method if you choose. Because there are so many off sizes today and I make a lot of my own stuff, I like a little more specificity. Just like everything else in fishing, it’s a preference thing. As far as Siri, we have agreed to go our separate ways.
  4. I had a similar situation as yours last year. I worked a bed at Athens for probably 1 1/2 to 2 hours because I thought she would break 11lbs but I could never get her to fire. I was so frustrated I stayed overnight to try again the next day. Waited for the sun to get high and went back to the spot and caught her on the second pitch. Sometimes they just aren’t ready. Unfortunately she was a hair less than 10.
  5. Well done…frankly it was probably less about the shakey head and more that you had gotten the bass agitated by the time you got to it. You can usually tell when they start getting agitated but sometimes you may have to work them a while to get them there. Some will never get there.
  6. I use braid backing on all my fluoro reels. I like a full spool and will replace the line if it drops below the spool bevel, so using backing is a huge $ saver for me. I just eyeball it but I doubt I use more than 60-70 yards. I personally see no need to use 100+ yards. By the time I get to that extra line, a re-spool would be past due anyway. Also, I go long periods of time between changing the backing.
  7. I’m more curious about how you are fishing your shakey head. While it can be worked a number of ways, it is a subtle, finesse presentation. The vast majority of the time, I work a shakey head very slowly and shake the rod tip on semi slack line to impart action. Typically I never lose contact with the bottom. I believe most shakey head anglers work them too fast. As far as jigs, I use many more retrieves from do nothing dead sticking all the way to stroking.
  8. If you’re starting from scratch, you might consider looking at some of the apps. FishingSmart is free and collects a lot of good information and will auto fill many of the sections. When you catch a fish, you can hit one button and it will automatically log your GPS location, time, weather, and most of the details from the previous catch. I’m not super familiar with it but I have heard good reviews from others. http://fishingsmartapp.com
  9. I think people were answering the question that is the title of the post: 5gm is closer to 1/8oz or 5/16oz?
  10. Here is another site where you can use ounces in fractions: https://www.rapidtables.com/convert/weight/ounce-to-gram.html Also, I copied and pasted a chart I have saved as a note in my phone for quick reference. The gram numbers are rounded to the nearest 10th. Grams Ounces 1.8 1/16 3.5 1/8 5.3 3/16 7.1 1/4 8.9 5/16 10.6 3/8 12.4 7/16 14.2 1/2 15.9 9/16 17.7 5/8 19.5 11/16 21.3 3/4 23.0 13/16 24.8 7/8 28.3 16/16
  11. I agree…and not just worst but also a false impression of the best. The anonymity allows many to project whatever they want to be. Just to be clear, I’m in no way suggesting going out and getting in fights. I’m much less of a hot head today. At 58, there is probably a biological reason for that. However, I’m still going to point out when I believe someone is wrong and I pray that never changes. As far as telling someone they are about to run over your spot, I have done that hundreds of times, including the game warden last summer. I’ve had a few people get mouthy but the overwhelming majority show respect and avoid the spot. Follow any pro on the water and I bet at least once during the day they will yell at someone to back off or move away from a spot. If it’s not happening to others, they are either fishing low pressured lakes or have chosen spots on one else wants to fish.
  12. The equivalent of everything that comes before the word but.
  13. Amazing how ZEN the posters on this site are. Nobody gets angry…yet all hell breaks loose if someone likes fluoro over mono. Crash shares a story where he was confronted, yet somehow it turned into he accosted some guy…read both posts. I wish I could share a thread from one of the posters judging his behavior who inappropriately and unjustifiably blasted me with some pretty unseemly words. Unfortunately that poster removed it, despite my request to leave it so others could see his response to me. I’ve said my piece and Crash doesn’t need me to defend him…he’s a big boy. I just have a hard time sitting idle when I think someone is being treated unfairly, especially when it involves what I feel is a sense of moral superiority.
  14. No need to rush…shad spawn is probably another couple of weeks away ?.

  16. Like many others, I usually use a white Texas rigged Menace or Bug. I don’t really care about brand as long as it’s white & fairly compact. They are not striking out of hunger but protection/aggression, so color doesn’t typically matter. However, they will often pick them up and move off the bed (especially the buck), so I don’t like a lot of appendages that they can grab. There have been situations where I have sat on a bass for a long time but usually you can determine fairly quickly the likelihood of catching the fish.
  17. FYI…I had a few Siebert jigs and can see what you mean with the keepers slicing too big of a channel. I don’t use them, so I decided to see if the points could be bent more upward. The keepers were pretty soft and bent easily and they still held the trailer just fine. I also removed the keeper on the underside and left the top one the same and that worked as well. Just thought I’d share.
  18. Unfortunately there seems to be this unspoken hierarchy on lakes today: Pleasure boats > bass boats > kayaks > bank fishermen and they are all ruled by the jet ski. Most boat people who would suggest a bank fisherman ignore the encroaching kayaker would blow a gasket if they were getting buzzed by a jet ski. If you are unwilling to make others aware, you might as well go back to pond hopping. Edit: I call BS to 90% of these holier-than-thou posts. The other guy followed him to his truck, stepped to him multiple times, and Crash was a kindergartner for telling the other guy what would happen if he started something…not a threat, a warning. The guy was confronting him at his truck. Sure there are options…fetal position, flee, buy him a cup of coffee. It sounds like a warning was an option for Crash and it worked…the situation was de-escalated. It’s also nice to know that if I can find all your honey holes I can have them to myself.
  19. My bad, it is. Glad you pointed it out. I’ll add an edited correction, so I don’t confuse.
  20. By the way, IMO you did nothing wrong. Yelling to warn someone they are about to run over your spot is called a Tuesday at most Texas lakes. The other person is the one who escalated it…3 TIMES. First by saying you weren’t going to catch #$@#, second when he approaches you while you are leaving, and third when he cusses you out. You did nothing wrong, you didn’t escalate until he got aggressive, and frankly he probably needs a good azz whuppin’. For people making it seem like you are the bad guy too, I guess I’m a bad guy as well because I would have done the same thing…screw that guy. The next time when he gives space to a bank fisherman, that fisherman probably has you to thank.

  22. Sounds like another case of “advice from dear old dad”.
  23. I wondered the same thing but my post was getting too long. All of these trailers should work on a normal jig.
  24. I think it was more in reference to the Diawa Zillion. The USDM version uses aluminum, the JDM version uses brass. Edit: @MiceNReets correctly pointed out that I had the gear type by market reversed.
  25. If you want a trailer with similar action to a sweet beaver, I would look for something without the flange which produces more of a flapping motion v. the slow wavy motion of a beaver. Something like NetBait B Bug, Strike King Rodent, Berkley Bunker or Creature Hawg, D-Bomb (the D-Bomb will have more action than the sweet beaver). I would try the NetBait as I think they have a slightly fatter body. Some of the chunks like the Zoom Super Chunk would work as well. All of these have lower resistance and a higher rate of fall, just like the sweet beaver.
