  1. Good advice everyone. I appreciate all the feedback. Jay
  2. Thanks, dodgeguy. I've been thinking about the 12lb mono on the medium. I appreciate your input. Jay
  3. Dens228, the only reasons I was considering the change is I'd like to use the topwater popper on the medium instead of the MH (and the straight fluoro won't work). Also, since I now have the medium, I won't be using too many treble hook lures on the MH, so I though 40lb might be better for the jigs and texas rigs. If it wasn't for the poppers, the 12lb fluoro would be perfect. Thanks, Erie.
  4. Thanks, ErieCan. I appreciate the input. You're confirming most of the same thoughts I have had. Cover isn't too bad for where I'd be fishing, so as long as 40lb braid is ok with heavier cranks and texas rigs, I think I may do that on the MH. Still torn between the 20 or 30 on the M. Do you think 30 is too heavy for a jerkbait, or won't it matter too much with a decent length fluoro leader? Jay
  5. Hey everyone, I'm debating switching my line choices on my two baitcasters. Can I get some thoughts? First one, MH/F - use for jigs, texas rigs, 5/8oz and heavier squarebills and lipless, and frogs. Currently I have 30lb braid to a 12lb fluoro leader (would take off leader for topwater). I started with 30lb braid when it was the only baitcaster I had trying to be versatile. Now I'm thinking of moving up to 40lb braid. Do you think the above applications would be better on 30 or 40lb. I was thinking 40 to get closer to a frog setup (I think jigs and texas rigs would be ok on 40lb?) Second one, Medium/Fast (kind of a soft fast though) - use for jerkbaits and under 5/8 oz squarebills and lipless, plus some weightless texas rigs. I currently have straight 12lb fluoro on it. I would possibly like to incorporate smaller topwater poppers into this rod too, so I was thinking of switching to mono (maybe 14lb) or 20 or 30lb braid to mono leader. The jerkbait and cranks are my priority on this rod though. Thoughts? Should I leave them as is (30lb braid on the MH and 12lb fluoro on the M) and just throw the popper on the MH or switch? Jay
  6. Going out Saturday here in Pennsylvania. Should be about 50 degrees in the afternoon. We had a few 65 - 70 degree days in a row, so I'm hoping that warmer the fish up a bit.
  7. I almost have that combo. I have the Spartacus 6.3:1 on the Royale MH/Fast. I've had it a few months and like it a lot so far. But, it has been winter, so I haven't fished a ton. I do have a lot of other KK spinning rods/reels that I've been using much longer for trout/stream fishing. I'm not the most experience fisherman, but I've liked everything I've purchased from them so far. Jay
  8. I also purchased a new baitcaster recently and had the same question initially, M or MH Fast. I went with the MH Fast and am glad I did. From what I've heard from a lot of guys on here, as well as a lot of reading, the MH is the most versatile of the powers. I wanted to be very versatile since I only plan on having one casting rod/reel for the near future. I spooled mine with 30lb braid to a 12lb fluorocarbon leader, trying to maximize what I can do with it. I would've used 12lb fluoro as the mainline, but went with the braid because I want to fish topwater and frogs (in light slop/cover without the fluoro leader). I figure I can fish lot of the lures you mentioned with a setup like this, including treble hook lures as long as I am careful with the hookset. Also, there are a lot of great videos on YouTube regarding the brake setups on the baitcaster. Debo's Fishing Channel helped me out a lot with understanding the brakes. Jay
  9. Catt, Awesome picture. I wouldn't know what to even do with that thing haha. I'm sure there aren't the fancy centrifugal and magnetic brakes that I have on that reel to help out a newbie like me. Yes, my daughter will grow up fishing with me I am sure. She is currently just short of 4 months. I'll give her a little more time to learn to crawl and walk first, then it's time to fish Her grandfather (my father-in-law) is eager to get her out too. I'm sure I will have many more questions in the future. Especially as the weather improves.
  10. Thanks, GaryH. I appreciate the kind words.
  11. Thanks everyone for the opinions and suggestions. I'll take all comments and suggestions. My favorite part about being a new angler so far has been learning about all the details of fishing and equipment. I love detailed stuff like this haha. Yes, I already purchased the KK stuff I mentioned in my first post. I had had some KK reels on some of my trout fishing spinning rods that I really liked for the cheap price and decided to go with them for the baitcaster setup as well. With a new baby in my house, and only one income, all my discretionary purchases require wife approval, so cheap is the way to go I will definitely check out the 12lb green BG the next time I get over to Walmart. The Walmart near me is a little rough and extra crazy during this pandemic, but they do always seem to have good prices on fishing gear. new2BC4bass I was hoping to come across someone else from the LHV on here. Leaser Lake really is nice, but you are right, the shore is tough there. I need to explore more of the perimeter. I've been visiting the same section most times this past year. Any other suggestions for good places to fish around our area? Ever heard of Todd Lake in Ironton or Johnson's Pond in Schnecksville? I was considering checking them out, came across them on Google Maps. Catt, making the setup work for whatever I make it work for is my main goal. As I said for now just the one baitcaster I purchased and a 6'6" spinning Medium Fast is all I have right now for bass. I have been practicing my knots and working on new ones Jay
  12. JB, I love the analogy! Thank you for your input.
  13. Thanks, MN. I appreciate your input. I had read the same thing about being careful with setting the hook on trebles when there is no stretch in the line. Sage advice. I appreciate it.
  14. Hello. I just recently purchased a baitcasting rod and reel. This is my first one. As I only plan on purchasing one for now, I wanted to make it as universal (in the middle for as main uses for bass) as possible. I plan to use casting jigs, senkos, crankbaits (lipless, square bill, medium diving), and jerkbaits primarily, and occasionally frogs and small swimbaits on the BC. I wanted to get some opinions on whether you think this is a relatively universal setup, like I had envisioned: KastKing Royale Select Rod (6' 6", MH, Fast) KastKing Spartacus BC Reel Left Hand (6.3:1) 30lb Braid to 12lb fluoro leader I spent a lot of time debating between 10lb and 12lb fluoro. I had thought 10lb originally, because the diameters matched exactly, but then doing some reading, I found that 12lb seems to be more "middle of the road" to fit my theme. Thanks, Jay
  15. Hey everyone. Thanks for the welcome messages. Definitely feels like a friendly place here. Thanks, GaryH, I will keep that in mind if I make it up that way. Thanks, for the input Fallser, nice to hear of someone who is at least a little familiar with my area. I appreciate your thoughts. Jay
