  1. Why do we cut a tree DOWN, then proceed to cut it UP
  2. I think A-JAY might have heard of this. Back in the 1970's I worked with a guy who had served in the Coast Guard. He swore the light house at the Isles of Shoals was haunted. He served out there when it was a manned station. The generator was in a separate building, and the main power disconnect was an old fashioned two lever switch that took real effort to move. More than once my buddy was sitting down to eat with the rest of the crew and the power died. They found the switch pulled down to the off position. They even tied a rope to it to keep it from moving, it still turned off.
  3. We were out a couple of days ago on a rainy, overcast, foggy day. I thought sure the smallies would be moving around. Went to our usual smallie spots and tried top, and mid to lower column fishing from shallow water on out. Got zip. Went back to bouncing stuff on the bottom and caught fish. On this trip, nothing had changed from sunny days, to a overcast rainy day.
  4. I haven't seen that used in years, but a call to the store would answer your question.
  5. Too much coffee in the morning, the mad dash for shore, throwing off your vest, peeling down your waders. O!! the memories!!
  6. The most peaceful type of fishing I've ever encountered was when I used to head to northern N.H. & ME flyfishing for trout. It was just so calming standing in a stream or river casting a fly. Doing that, the rest of the world didn't exist for me.
  7. It's been a weird summer up here in Maine. I try for LM, but have had the most consistent luck with deep water SM.
  8. I've caught a few that already had a hook in them, and had for some time. So some survive, but, I'm sure, not all.
  9. On my echomap you get to quick draw thru the navigation charts, and the deeper the depth the wider it will draw.
  10. I started out this spring with a new Garmin echomap chirp 73 on my console. As some of you may have read I had a malfunction with it and Garmin replaced it with a plus unit. Yesterday was the first time I had a chance to use it, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on it. First let me say I'm no expert on electronics and do not embrace new technology easily ( still don't have a smart phone or "I" anything.) Screen-- it is definitely clearer and sharper than the non plus unit. Also the field of view is a great improvement. We have a multi species boat and my wife can see this screen from the left seat. She could not see anything on the non plus unit unless I pointed it right at her. Touch screen functions-- I thought this was going to take time to get used to and be a pain in the butt, however within a few minutes I was calling up the different functions much faster than using push buttons. I really like it. Sonar-- I was using this at the same lake, and going over the same places, that I used the non plus unit on, and I was seeing more and sharper detail, and this was with factory settings. So far another definite improvement. I've tried regular sonar, down scan, and side scan and got good sharp detail on all three. Also-- as this doesn't have as many buttons, the whole unit is about an inch shorter in length than the non plus one, so it takes up less space. I think that at some point down the road, because of it's shorter length, I would probably have room to fit a 9" screen on the console. Dislikes-- So far nothing I can see except I still have a non plus unit in the bow, and I caught my self tapping the screen trying to get it to do things. This is by no means a technical review, but just my initial thoughts and impressions. If this changes down the road, I'll let you know. Thanks for looking Jim
  11. Just an FYI for anyone planning to fish this area in the next few weeks. Per Maine fish and game the boat launch at Square pond will be closed for repairs from Sept. 4-21 and the Mousam lake launch will be closed for repairs from Sept 17- Oct.5
  12. Another lefty here and proud of it.
  13. Setting the hook on weeds from time to time is a fact of life in this kind of fishing. But as Bluebasser 86 said, the more experienced you get the easier it will be to tell the difference. I can't always tell someone how I knew it was a fish instead of weeds when I set the hook, but after fishing this way long enough your instinct will be sharpened enough to pick up the subtle difference between weeds and fish.
  14. Had a cool, foggy, drizzly morning. Was hoping for top water but had to go deep. My wife hooked a good one ( I'm holding it for her) then a couple minutes later it was my turn. Notice her rod and reel on the first pic. Nobody will ever convince me a Zebco isn't up to the task.
  15. Hello from just out side Kittery. Nice to have another Maine'r on board!
  16. 1) be safe 2) have fun 3) if you can't do 1 & 2, stay home
  17. UPDATE II--- the plus unit arrived this morning. Everything was as I was told. I just had to swap out the cradle and plug the transducer and power cable in and it fired right up. We're heading out fishing tomorrow so I'll have a chance to really try it out. After I use it for a while I'll write and give a review.
  18. Well, the DEA agent just left. It took two bags of Senkos and the location of one of my secret fishing spots, but he let me off the " hook ".?
  19. This is spooky. I happened to be on the phone with Garmin when I came across this post, so I asked them. From what they said, yes you can do this. However they said if you are doing this and run out of memory you will get an error message.
  20. I recovered some of it out of the vacuum. It does float. I looked at it with a magnifying glass, and it is crushed foam. Not sure how it ended up like that and I'll keep an eye out for any more. Thanks for the help everyone.
  21. So nothing to worry about then?
  22. Ya, it could be crushed foam, it has no smell that I can detect, I know what battery acid is like and that's not it. Besides the cranking battery is a good 4 ft away. I haven't moved the boat so it can't be from vibration. We have Thunder storms tonight so I vacuumed it up before covering the boat back up. The pin goes in the hole ( Think barrel bolt ) It's really weird. It feels very lite. Can't tell if it floats, I cleaned it up before reading these posts.
  23. Hi All, The back platform on my Lund swings up to gain access to the gas tank etc., and is held secure by two pins that go in holes on either side. I had it open a couple of days ago and didn't put the pins back in when I closed it. This A.M. I opened it up again and found this. It's a fine grained something that I have no idea what it could be. I've seen it once before this spring, the plug on the onboard battery charger, the slots for the spades had some in it but I didn't think much about it. Any guesses on what the blank it is. The gap in the pile in the pics is where I ran my finger thru. Thanks
  24. UPDATE-- slight oops--- As of last night I had not received a tracking #, so I called them just now. It did not ship yesterday. What happened was the customer rep. was actually too nice. He told me the unit they were shipping me should have the latest software, but just incase it didn't, he would also send me a card with the latest software on it. Here was the oops. Garmin is running a couple day behind on the cards, so they were waiting to ship until they had a card to go with it. Kinda like the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing. After talking to them this A.M they will ship the unit out today and the card later. they are still overnighting the unit so If I get it tomorrow I'll set it up tomorrow night and head to the lake to try it out on Fri. I really can't complain, still great customer service. On a side note he said I'll love the plus unit, the screen is supposed to be much clearer.
