  1. So I'm new to fishing a jig, but after that last time I went out I will always fish one. My question is what is an ideal equipment set up for fishing jigs. As of right now I'm using a baitcasting reel and 6'6 med/heavy rod. Pitching 1/4-1/2 oz strike king pro model jigs with matching zoom chunk trailers. Any help on set up would be appreciated, as I am asking Santa for a "jig" set up. Thanks in advance
  2. I mainly pond fish so if I don't catch at least 30 for a whole day I've had a bad day. Of course my ponds are wicked awesome to fish and the average bass goes about 2lbs with many fish in the range of 5-10. But when lake fishing I'd say 5-20. Depends on the day, though I can only count the number of days I've ever been skunked on one finger.
  3. It makes sense every now and then to try something different. Almost 90% of my fish come on spinner baits and T-rigs. Last year I started learning to fish a jig, that would account for the other 10%. This year I've decided to try the Carolina rig. I've been reading as much as I can in the old forum logs, but had a couple of questions still. One thing that popped up a lot was the hook set. Everyone was saying to use a sweeping hook set as apposed to the over the head move. Why is this? Can someone please define the sweeping hook set to me? Another question I had was is there any difference in the way a bite feels than from say a T-rig? And last but not least, how to retrieve? My best guess was more or less a stop go sweeping of the rod. Thanks in advance for all the help.

    Oklahoma?

I used to fish in one last year but the president quit the club and no one stepped up. I believe there is a couple of clubs around the OKC area though. If you PM me I can give you some info that I have.
  5. I can't find the pic but here is a link. http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=33967413&albumID=488561&imageID=28233733 Caught on a 6' Lake Fork Tackle Co. Watermelon Seed Crawdad
  6. The money bait for me on almost all of the small ponds I fish is a Zoom lizard T-rigged and weightless. Cast that bad boy on top of the muck and make it dance all the way back. I can almost garauntee results. When you get to a hole in the scum let it fall down into the water column, it's hard for the fish to resist. The colors I use mainly are Cherry Seed, Watermelon Seed w/red fleck, and Blue with silver fleck. As far as size goes it's been my experience that size doesn't matter to much. Prime example, I caught one yesterday that was smaller than the 6' lizard. Good luck!
  7. Going to try the park again this evening hopefully I'll slay them. Armed with the knowledge of the forum I'm sure I can't go wrong.
  8. The slide show was awesome. Hell I'd been rigging them upside down. Don't be fooled I'm really pretty savy when it comes to fishing, but I guess if you did everything right it'd be called Catching and not Fishing.
  9. Thats what I was thinking. I just don't think my medium action spinning rod has enough back bone to really get the hook through and into the fish. Will try tomorrow with my baitcasting gear. Thanks for all the help guys.
  10. Will try upping the hook size. Was thinking about changing to a #4 but I'd had enough of those fishes shenannigans for one day.
  11. I'm beginning to think the reason they call them flukes is because it is just that a fluke to land a fish on them. So I'm down at the park pond fishing a lil before the sun goes down and getting vicious bites cast after cast, the only problem is I didn't catch a single one. What gives? Are my hooks to small? I'm using #2. Throwing it on a medium action spinning rod, with 8lb test. Am I not using stout enough equipment to pierce the bait? I know my hooks are sharp cuz I tested them after I missed the 5th fish. I'm beginning to see why I threw away all my flukes last year. Does anyone else have this problem with this particular bait? I fish the trick worm with the same rod/reel set up and have no problems. Thanks for the help. Hopefully I can get out there tomorrow and use the advice here to redeem myself.
  12. I actually do something a bit unsual with trailer hools and run them upside down. My thinking on this is that it is a top water bait and it shouldn't (in theory) be in much danger of getting hung up. I have used this trick for a couple of years mainly with spinnerbaits and it has dramatically increased my hit/land ratio.
  13. Yep had a trailer hook. And was throwing a follow up bait, a watermelon fluke. Only had one bite on that as a follow up bait and landed him. I was thinking that maybe they weren't really biting as much as they were spearing the bait. The fish have already spawned here and are protecting fry. At least that is my guess as when you see a school of fry you could see a protector within a few feet.
  14. It was an overcast day the other day and was throwing a black buzz bait and had fish blowing it up the entire time I was fishing. Problem was I only caught 3 fish. What gives? Had my bait blown out of the water on more than one occasion. What do I need to throw in this case and how do I need to work it to get these seemingly active fish to hook up? Thanks guys, it's always a fountain of knowledge and help.
  15. If this water is as clear as you say it is they should be able to see an electric orange trickworm from all the way across the pond. Bright colors and eratic retrieves kill the fish in my ponds.
  16. I"m guessing somewhere around 8 1/2 but she had been full fat belly oh her I bet you could have got double digits out of her. Nice fish

    your pb

This is my pb is 10lb 7oz but I don't have a pic. This one goes 7lb 12oz
  18. gorgeous fish!
  19. When I start having trouble getting bites I always go to the greatest stand by ever. DYNAMITE!!!!
  20. Just an idea here but it could not be that big word you are all throwing around. My dad has a couple of ponds on his land, doesn't farm = no fertilizer, and has very sparse vegetation. THe reason his ponds are that color green is from the clayish mud that makes up most of the soil there. If this is the case on this particular pond the fishing should be just fine and plentiful. Plus my guess on the Ahmish people is they would probably catch fish to eat as opposed to buying it, so I wouldn't worry about weeds growing out of your ears. If you ate what you kept. But being that they may harvest their own fish they may not let you fish it. just my .02
  21. Anyone seen this or know what it is? Looks more like some sort of fresh water eel than a fish but who knows. Would have been nice if they had a fresh picture instead of something a few days old in the sun. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/23937018#23937018
  22. 10 lb 7 oz 26in from the bank on a farm pond White Strike King 1/4 oz spinnerbait Crescent, OK
  23. Honestly I'm not sure as specifics go but I'd have to say they spawn when the temp is in the mid to upper 40's. I have started to see little hatchlings in a couple of local ponds here.
  24. I've never fished for these toothy creatures, but aparently I live within 10 miles of 2 great lakes to fish for walleyes and saugeyes. The only thing I know about these fish is they taste good. Any tips and or techniques on how to catch them would be great. Thanks in advance. Oh yeah I guess it would help to know that I live in Oklahoma and both of these lakes have tons of rip rap and or rock/cement pilings to relate to. I read in the paper last week that they should be getting ready to spawn soon. I'd like to reap the rewards in possible. Thanks again.
