Im not throwing a lot of stuff over 1/2 oz for smallies, and most of it is around 1/4 oz including lead and/or plastics.
If thats the kinda stuff your using then i would recommend a 7' or so Medium Light rod with a fast tip on it. And bring the reel if youre going to go handle it before you buy it.
And definately pút braid on that real.
Start practicing a leader on it. Use which ever one you are best at. FG is great but is easy to do badly, the uni to uni is simple to do and has won a lot of money.

I know I am deep enough when my jig hits a rock, I have to lift it right away or risk losing it in the next few moments. But thats the job.
First off, I think everyone is expressing their observation in their circumstance. But my circumstance may be different (I fish 99% smallies on fly and spinning gear in Ontario rivers.) Thus my experience and opinion should be way different than someone in Texas.
Not that we arent both right.
Your years of chasing trout should help.
Smallies are alot like trout but add a touch more drag and watch out for the aerial assaults.
It's a blast on the river!
