  1. Thanks! Sounds like diameter difference in 20-30% is not a big deal.
  2. Hello everyone. Recently tried to use a braided line and like it a lot, but time to time i am fishing in a rocky bottom river with grub and t-rig, what is not great for braid condition. Even if i never had any issues with it, to prevent line breaks in future i would like to try a fluoro leader. I have G-SOUL X8 30lb braid with 0.208mm(0.008') diameter. What is suitable diameter for leader? Have some research and found high rated local fluoro shock leader - Seaguar Premium Max with a wide range of lb's. Tried to match braid line diameter and fluoro mentioned above: 30lb braid - 0.208mm === 7lb fluoro - 0.208mm 30lb braid - 0.208mm === 9.5lb fluoro - 0.235mm (0.009') 30lb braid - 0.208mm === 11.5lb fluoro - 0.260mm (0.01') 30lb braid - 0.208mm === 14lb fluoro - 0.285mm (0.011') How it's important and healthy to match braid and fluro diameters? Is it not a problem at all to have a higher diameter leader, for example 9.5lb from above? Or better to choose 7lb and it's will be enought? Not sure about monster basses in shallow river near me, but seen recently photos of ~40cm (15 inch) bigmouth. Have a big doubts about it and cant decide by myself, thank you for advice.
  3. Thats a big help, thank you. Checked local amazon and it's really a lot of different spoons, include Daiwa Crusaider in different sizes and colors. Not sure about trout in a place where i am fishing, but hear you can catch a ayu, carps (koi), small/big mouth bass and catfish. Right now i have a shimano SLX MGL 70 baitcast reel. It's pretty compact, but is baitcast fine for trout fishing? As far as i know spoons is pretty lightweighted and little size. For example Daiwa Crusaider can be bought in 3 variants: 4g/28mm, 7g/35mm, 10g/40mm. May assume, that 7g and 10g is OK for baitcaster. Or i can get a not expensive 2000 spinning reel for it, because have ultra light or light rod for it.
  4. What size or type of spoons you use? I can't decide on shape, size and colors, will be happy if you can share your experience with examples!
  5. Thanks a lot for the priceless advice. For now, I decided to order Daiwa spinners #3 what mentioned at the first post, golden color. Surprisingly, but it feels more than 7g (received it already). Will have a try it on this weekend on baitcaster and, if it's hard to cast, swap on spinner reel. And I definitely looking forward to trying out a Mepps and other types of inline spinners in the future.
  6. Hello from Japan. Recently i found a new good spot at near river, but it has fast current and bottom of small stones. I may assume, that the depth in the center of the river is around 4 foots, and pretty shallow near banks. Have tried to use super shallow cranks (0-30cm), but current is too strong to have a stable retrive. 1m+ cranks hitting bottom and not sure is it ok or not. Checked old topics related to the same problem and people advice to use a inline spinners. It sounds interesting to try, but there is several doubts: 1. I am baitcast user and most of the inline spinners what i can find at local shops/amazon in range of 2g - 6g. Not sure about 6g and bank casting. 90% of my cranks is Daiwa Peanuts II, 9g and it's my comfortable weight. 2. Found a Daiwa spinners in 7g, 9g and 11g, but their color choise is very limited compate with USA variants: 3. If i use a spinning reel, what is suitable weights to use? Have pretty cheap reel with 8lb mono. To clarify, my current setup is: Rod: Shimano bass one ML 6'2" regular action Reel: Shimano SLX MGL 70 Line: 30lb braid line 0.2mm diameter
  7. Personally i own a SLX MGL 70 and it feels great for compact size setup
  8. Hello everyone! Recently i bought baitcaster and like it so far. Had a lot of practice with 0.28 mono hight quality line and do not have any backlashes at all. Only one bad point - my casting distance, it's pretty short with any kind of baitcaster setting and might be summ of short rod, bad aerodynamics of 9gram lures (Daiwa Penauts II), and my experience/technique. (With a 1/2oz it's a different story, casts pretty far) Time to time it feels as a critical issue, because i am fishing from bank at different rivers wide. After reading older topic here, a lot of people noticed that braid cast further and, due to minimal/no stretch, offers higher sentsativity. Do you recommend to use a mono/fluro leader for it? Right now i am thinking to use it only if i fishing at the mountain type rivers with a lot of stones/shallow parts. Overall is it good idea to give try to the braid line for crankbaits? (Have also one jig in my arsenal) My setup: - Shimano Bass One 6'2 ML regular action rod - Shimano SLX MGL 70 - Mono line: Sanyo nylon line GTR ULTRA 12lb (0.28mm) - Braid line what i bough, but still on delivery: YGK G-soul X8 UPGRADE - 30lb (0.20mm)
  9. Watched a ton of videos about baitcast reel preparation and, based on it, slowly dropping down. At the same time centrifugal breakers - 2/4 ON, outside one (not sure how to call them right) - 5/10. Have no problems with a backlash's at all and thinking to try turn off one centrifugal breaker tomorrow. Actually i like to use my finger for controlling it. But overall feels like i need more distance sometimes. Due to quarantine can't have a ride to narrow river, fishing at pretty wide one now.
  10. Just to clarify - recieved rod, reel and 12lb (.28mm) line and had first fishing session with a baitcaster yesterday. So far everything feels so great. But spend few hours to get used for casting. Compare with a spinning reel, can't throw a crank far, but practice makes perfect. Approximately (just on my feelings) ~20m is my limit now with a stong side and back throw and 3/8oz crank. Not a huge difference for a narrow river though. Accuracy > distande, maybe.
  11. Thanks for the advice! Braid sounds exiting to try, but still not sure for what style and bait types it suits mostly. But definitly will have a look on it after some practice with mono.
  12. That's a huge help for me, thanks a lot! Right, it's a 12lb*, not a #12 one.
  13. Hello from Japan! Can i have your advice about my doubts on fishing line size and type for ML baitcast rod, please? Mostly i am fishing at narrow rivers from bank with light (~1/4oz - 4/9oz) and shallow (2.5m MAX) crankbaits and aim black bass, rarely sea bass. Setup: - 6'2" Shimano Bass one XT 162ML. At the specification it says: lure weight: 5-14g, nylon line: 8-16lb - Shimano 2019 SLX MGL 70. Specification says about line size: 12-100、14-90、16-80 Because it's my first baitcaster, as well as my 3rd week of fishing experience, i decided to start from a mono line, based on a feedback from older topics here. Most people mentioned #12 mono line with a M or MH rods as a good start, but i never seen someone had a talk about ML rods. And my questions is: 1. With a ML rod and mono line, will it be not too soft to feel a fish bite or kick from obstacle? 2. Not a better idea to consider different fishing line type for ML rod or i am overthinking? 3. What a golden middle line size for this setup and purpose? #12 is not a too heavy for light crankbaits?
  14. Appreciate your help! To be honest mostly i have 10g cranks, and 12g is single and heaviest one. Will think about M type right now, thank you. Without never trying it by yourself, it's hard to choose on the right one. At the beginning i chose 162ML only because official Shimano site and catalog says it's the only one rod from the series what mostly suitable for crankbaits (only the one red circle under crankbaits): http://fishing.shimano.co.jp/product/rod/5293 But at the same time it's not great for the vibration lipless one, maybe because they are mostly heavy and M+ rod is necessary.
  15. Thanks a lot! As far as i could understand this rod (Shimano) is kind of local product, costs ~70$ now. A lot of people use different lenth (mostly it's 7'+?) and pefer different type - ML, M, MH and etc., what makes hard to find a kind of golden middle ^^'
  16. Hello from Japan! Recently i hooked up by fishing, especially sea and black bass and found this great forum! Due to my lack of experience i would like to ask advice on the setup what i am planning now. Few weeks ago i started from a cheap spinning fishing set what i bought at the local fishing shop: - Noname fishing rod with a numbers - SP163L - Daiwa 10$ spinning reel By the advice from shop worker i started straight from crankbaits and felt in love with it. (Bought around 10 different Daiwa peanuts 2 crank's for one week). From today i am sure in my hobby and would like to have a solid update on my rod and reel. After a lot of reading, i came up to this items: - Shimano Bass One XT 162ML - rod, 1.88m (~6"2'), 5g to 15g bait weight and Regular action: http://fish.shimano.com.sg/content/fish/asia/sg/en/homepage/ProductPage.P-BASSONEXTROD.html - Shimano 2019 SLX MGL - 6.3:1 ratio - Nylon Line Silver Thread SAR 300m Aqua Green - 8lb I am fishing exclusivly at rivers and planning to try a lakes in future. Sea bass / Black bass lives at the downstrea/upstread of the same river. My idea behind this setup is a multipurpose single rod/reel for different situation - shallow and fast mountain rivers, mixed depth (from super shallow to 20'+) urban rivers, from the bank. All my cranks are from 1/4oz to 1/2oz, super shallow, shallow and deep types (0cm to 2.5max). How do you think is it solid enough for the beginning and, what is mostly important for me, enough flexible for different river types? Thank you~
