  1. I am sure all of you folks realize what a treasure we have here on this site. Keith saved me a bunch of dollars that I don't have. Cancer sucks the life of not only yourself, but financially as well. Keith, you a national treasure!!
  2. Keith, again you were exactly right. I followed your steps and when I got ready to start it, it started on the first click! You are amazing! Please PM your mailing address, I would love to buy you lunch! Dave
  3. Thank you, I will do exactly what you say and see what happens, thanks for taking the time to help!
  4. Thanks for the reply Ski213, I will look and see if anything jumps out at me, I appreciate you taking the time to reply!
  5. If anyone has words of wisdom, I would be very thankful, I am sure there are other folks on here with the know how on Evinrude motors.
  6. Please forgive my ignorance about this, I am fairly intelligent on a number of subjects but this. About a year ago I bought a 97 ranger r72 with a 115hp Evinrude Intruder that had very low hours on it. I ran great during the last summer and I thought, due to medical issues, that it would be my last summer to actually use it. Last November when I winterized it, including fogging the cylinders, I filled it full with alcohol free gas and the appropriate amount of fuel stabilizers. I am starting to get it ready for my last huraah, and noticed the lower unit from the cowl on down is covered with I believe to be fuel and oil. We have had numerous days of 95 degree weather. Any idea what is happening? Thank you for your help!
  7. Thanks Keith, I was hoping you would reply, I trust your judgement and knowledge! Dave
  8. Greetings, Once again I need some advice/knowledge from this remarkable group of folks. I have a 1997 Evinrude Intruder on a Ranger R72, the previous owner stated that it has only about 22 hours on the whole rig. I started it yesterday, after sitting for 31/2 months. At first, it did not want to start, with choking I finally managed to get it started. I ran it for a few minutes, maybe 10 or so, and shut it down. Went about some other business and when I looked at the lower unit it seemed to be leaking fluid. My first assumption is that the seal around the prop went south. So, I thought I'd better get ahead of this thing and call a pro. After speaking with Randy at Randy's Marine service in Junction City Kansas, I am not real convinced that the seal is leaking. Here's why, Randy said that this year of setup with a black cover over the oil tank is not vented and that in all likelihood what I am seeing is fuel and oil that was not consumed with starting and running. I filled the lower unit with 90 weight gear lube, it only took a small amount, there was no water in it when I pulled the bottom plug. Randy said that with it sitting like that the oil injection and the fact that it was hard to start meant that I filled the carbs with oil. What do you folks think about this? The "leakage" appears as a very black runny oil liquid and does not seem like gear oil, any and all words of wisdom will be appreciated!
  9. Thanks again for your insight. I would look at the size of the prop if I could figure out what kind of prop lock it has. In the owners manual the previous owner has hand written "prop lock- Western Wind #840205579107902". I have been unable to find any info on it. It is a brass colored cone over the nut and washer with a slot in it. I don't have a clue how to take that off, may have to take it to a shop. If I can figure out how to post a pic of it I will.
  10. Thank you Keith, I was hoping to hear exactly what you said! The impeller was replaced about 3 months ago and the carbs cleaned. The man I bought it from, bought it for his wife who contracted cancer and died in 98, he has kept it in storage, climate controlled for all these years. He kept up with maintenance, new tires on the trailer, licensing etc, but never used it. It has a stainless prop on it that has no blemishes what so ever on it. I have not even started it yet, but am going to in the next week or so. What kind of top speed is realistic for this set up? I am not so concerned with speed but reliability. I have about two years of boating left in me, I have stage four cancer, and am hoping to have a stressful free experience out of it. Thank you so much for your wisdom!
  11. I have been reading this forum for the last 3 months with fascination! You folks have a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience. I sure would like to tap into that knowledge with a question. What do I need to be concerned with with the above mentioned outboard? The person I bought it from has had it since new, claims only 22 hours on the whole rig, which I believe, there is not even a scratch on the skeg, lower unit, basically the whole boat. It looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. I was stored in a climate controlled garage, and everything has been updated, like the impeller and even the trailer tires. I am getting ready to go on my maiden voyage and sure would like some insight. Oh, by the way the motor is attached to a Ranger R72. Way2slow, you seem to have unlimited knowledge on OMC motors, I would sure appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks in advance to all you fine folks!
  12. I bought a Ranger r72 not too long ago. It is in immaculate condition with a 115 Evenrude Intruder motor. The dumb thing is in showroom condition and all of the manuals came with it. The problem being that I don't know what is holding the prop on. In the owners manual for the motor, in the previous owners handwriting, is "Prop Lock Western Wind followed by a 15 digit number. I have googled this to no avail. The "lock" has a copper colored nose cone over the prop nut that has a slot in it about 3/8" long. I have no clue how this set up is supposed to work, can anyone shed some light for me on it? Thanks guys and gals, I am new to the bass boat world am discovering that my knowledge of 40 years ago is not serving me well!
  13. Thank you for the opinions, yes I am going to live every second of my time left! Sounds like I have a pretty decent rig to play with. Yes, Blue Basser 86, I moved from CO about 8 months ago to Clay Center, I am sure you know where that is. Again, thanks for the responses, any other words of wisdom you can bestow on me would be welcome, as I am a total newbie to bass boats and bass fishing for that matter!
  14. Thanks, LC, I have never seen a forum like this with all the knowledge in one place, it seems like you folks have all the answers!
  15. Hi folks, I have been reading this forum for the last couple of months and it seems like there is a wealth of knowledge here. A little background, I am 63 years of age and just moved to north central Kansas to be near the only family I have, my daughter and her husband and two grandkids. I was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer, stage four about a year ago. At that time the medical profession said there was basically nothing they could do for me as it was in my bones and lymph glands, they said to expect about 2-4 more years. OK, now that that is out of the way, I just bought a 1997 Ranger R72 Sport with a 115 Evenrude Intruder on it. It meets all the requirements of a true "barn find", has about 22 hours total on the whole rig, garaged in a climate controlled building etc. It looks showroom fresh, I would challenge anyone to find a scratch on it (that is until I take it out for the 1st time!), the previous owner garaged it in 2002 and has kept up with everything maintenance related. My questions are: How reliable are these outboards, Is this a decent boat on big water, what is a boat like this worth? What kind of top speed will I see, it does have a Raker SS prop. Thank you all for your wisdom and listening to my woes!
