That's brings me to another thing I need to do research on. Why do crankbait rods need to differ from square bills or swimbaits? I've heard many people say that but with my novice understanding my mind tells me "you just reel them all in until something bites" haha. Is it the depth of the bait or the type of retrieve that differs?

I'm in the market for a rod for crankbaits, squarebills, swimbaits, etc.. From my research, I should be looking for a medium-moderate rod about 7'. I've never really had any luck with search baits and I'd like to improve on that this summer.

You think I'd have decent luck going into pretty much any cove? I'm going into this whole thing blind. I'll make sure to do some research to shed some light on how to catch 'em in May.
And I fished Sam Rayburn with a guide once. I caught a few decent fish but I didn't really like the guide, to be honest. So for that I'm a little hesitant about spending the money but I'd be willing to budget over the next few months if I could get a guide that really made my experience a good one.

I'll be visiting my girlfriend's parents in May and they live ~1 hr away from Lake Fork. I'm going to try to sneak out of the house one day and get some time on the water, especially since I currently live in West Texas and don't get out enough.
I don't have a boat or kayak of my own, so I was looking at renting a kayak. I've been fishing small ponds my whole life and have only been on big water a handful of times. My question is am I getting over my head with something like this? Is Lake Fork worth trying out for just one day only having never been before? Any smaller lakes near Canton I should try instead? Thanks!
