  1. Thank you so much for detailed insight!! Now I know where to start without having constant doubt about my rig:) Do you mind asking where do you go in downstream? The river is so wide and inaccessible except picnic area and campground, I am wondering if you need a kayak or boat. I even looked for a guide to learn the area, but all guides go to main lake rather than river..
  2. Hi members! I am trying to fish a dam spillway with heavy current (raystown dam in PA). I heard there are striped bass, walleye among others. I have fished dam spillway before, but couldnt get enough casting distance despite fairly narrow size of spillway and got snagged a lot. I am thinking about float rig with jig, but looking for more specific insights on lure weight, float size, and rod/reel. Will surf rod work?? Appreciate any input!!
  3. Thank you all for the input!! I ended up getting sierra 692! Havent fished yet but rod feels great!!
  4. I did return the first one. The second one I got was the same. I had several pflueger and every model including lower end models have been butter smooth. I couldnt believe this particular president XT model was badly designed, so I decided to see if it could be oil/grease isssue. Not sure about all the technical stuff but whats true is my reel feels 100% better after cleaning the inside, especially the shaft. The only area that got grease was gear tooth. I am not sure if cleaning grease from shaft or oiling did the trick, but I am happy about the outcome, maybe there are some who is in similar shoes.
  5. Number of turn itself doesnt matter but what it does mean is effortless spinning.. Before I serviced there was resistance when reeling.. now its smooth but also effortless to spin. Nothing wrong with wanting best performance out of a gear.. My point was that there are parts that should be grease free. I didnt realize spool shaft on spinning gear was one of them.. Maybe many people already know. Putting oil on a shaft takes a minute so I am prepared because now the reel feels perfect!
  6. Yeah each vendor has different storing condition I guess.. I am glad that now I can set it up correctly for any new reel!
  7. Hi members, Just wanted to share what I found out today while working on a spinning reel. Maybe it is obvious thing for some but wanted to help those in my shoes.. I got a new pflueger xt reel, and it felt gritty when turning, with heavy handle turn feeling..I couldnt believe president xt felt worse than trion. When I give a free spin on handle, it would barely make one turn. This was a new reel that I replaced with the same model because I thought the first one was defective..The replacement was doing the same thing. After several disassembly, I found Gritty turning feel resolved after removing and re-seating pivot gear. Then I cleaned shaft and inside of worm gear of any grease, I put only oils, and now my handle turns 3~4 times when I give it a spin. Just wanted to share as I am really excited to solve this issue on a brand new reel. Hope this helps some out there..
  8. Thank you for input! Good to know you are happy with 2 power dobyns with mono.. Do you still feel Dobyns run lighter than rating though?
  9. Hi members! I'm looking for decent dropshot spinning rod, maybe double as ned rod, narrowed down to Dobyns and Mojobass, but cant decide on model.. I use straight fluoro or copolymer 6 lbs, weight is 1/8 ~ 1/4. Cover is sparse to moderate. I am mostly bank fishing, rarely on kayak. 1.Dobyns Sierra 692 sf 2.Dobyns Sierra 693 sf 3.Mojobass 6'10 ML 4.Mojobass 6'8 M I'd think ML is typical DS rod but a bit concerned about hook set with copoly lines when using texas rigging.. would M rod do better when using lines with some stretch? Appreciate any input!
  10. Hi members~ I ve been using lews baitcaster, but wanting to try out shimano. But line up and model names are pretty confusing. Could someone give me some brief guidance? I am looking for 3 types of reels, below are what I am currently using. 1. One for moving baits, Long range casting. (Lews BB1 pro) 2. One for standard, all around workhorse. (Lews Tournament pro) 3. Heavy duty for frog/heavy cover (Lews super duty) Which shimano models would translate from current setup? Price range is 100~300 dollar, anything that is not too budget or too expensive. Appreciate all inputs! Thanks~
  11. Hi members~ I am currently shopping for a finesse spinning rod for dropshot and senko. I currently have fenwick eagle medium fast 6’6” rod (1/8~3/4) and that has been my standard for what medium rod would feel like. Now I checked ML rod from St.Croix, Lews, and Dobyns, and they all feel more like MH spinning rod in my book.. They seem way too stout for ML.. Then I checked fenwick HMG ML, and the rating seems appropirate.. My question is, Does fenwick power rating usually overestimated? Or maybe Bass specific spinning rods tends to be more stout? What is the rod you consider to be a true ML rod? Thank you for any opinion or insight!!
  12. Hi members~ Its kind of weird question but if you had both dedicated frog and flipping rod, but can bring only one rod to do frog or flipping, which one would be your choice? Would it make more sense to do frogging on flipping rod? Or flipping with frog rod? I guess simply put which rod is more versatile despite being technic specific?
  13. thank you for the reply! Any thought on issue with durability of brass?
  14. Hi members~ I am trying to setup a meat stick, and looking at lews super duty reel. I notice it is has brass gear. Other than better corrosion resistance, whats the pros and cons of brass gear compared to aluminum? Brass seems like weaker metal, so wondering why its on lews heavy duty model.. Thank you for any help!
  15. I had same question on use of MH spinning rod. It obviously dont get used as much as medium spinning or MH baitcaster... My conclusion is if you need to throw light lure with light line that baitcaster dont do well, but still need power to pull from cover, MH spinning seems to make sense. I have 2500 reel with braid..I use it when I need to throw small weightless lures in some cover..or if I need better hookset than medium spinning..
