  1. The Spook Jr has been killing it lately for me. The arbagost hula frog popper has done well too.
  2. I live in Worthington. I mostly pond hop around that area but most of them are private so it makes it difficult.
  3. I can’t wait! This weekend I will be tied to the water for sure hah!
  4. So for some that wanted to know what I went with, I got the Dobyns 734 and the Daiwa Tatula CT 7:3:1. Havnt gotten line yet, I’m torn between letting cabelas do it or giving it a shot myself. But I’m gonna go with mono, so if(probably when) it backlashes I’ll only be out a few dollars until I really get the hang of it. As always thanks for the advice BR.
  5. I thought the same way until i invested in a specialized rod suggested by this exact forum, and the difference is remarkable. Weight, balance, sensitivity, performance, the list goes on. But then again, i caught my PB on a 60$ combo from Bass Pro Shop that i got 5 or 6 years ago. Just a newbies 2 pennies after purchasing my first specialized rod and really noticing a difference.
  6. What is the difference between the Daiwa CT and Type-R? Discount tackle has a type R on sale for 143, and a CT on sale for 103. Although the type R is a 8:1 ration (not sure if thats really what i need). I am leaning hard on the Dobyns 734C with the Tatula, and now this throws a wrench in the Reel plan. Side note, didn't know Daiwa made Acura's ?.
  7. Anyone in the Ohio area got some pond locations near Worthington/Olentangy/Dublin locations? Not asking for your honey holes, but I am looking for some new ponds to try out.
  8. Thanks guys for the advice guys. I’m gonna check all these out.
  9. well I can confirm it was catfish or carp but didn’t really examine further, wasn’t big bass that’s for sure. I did however catch a bass with my spook while practicing with it, so that cool(first non Senko catch this year).
  10. I have read a lot about this combo for beginners. If you could start from scratch..is worth buying TP-1 combo or the 704 and a daiwa tutula or fuegos for the money/learning/quality/long term use aspect?
  11. What is a good all-round line? I read 40# test is safe because of the strength and the thicker diameter to reduce "cut-ins", whatever that is ?
  12. ahh ok, thanks. Speaking of trebles, i am using my spinning setup - MF - to throw treble top waters staying within the rod limit. Is that acceptable for treble lures until i can furnish a third set up?
  13. Why the HF and not a MH? Whats the biggest difference/what do you sacrifice in noob terms out of curiosity. I have read a lot of good things about that rod and as i mentioned earlier i like my spinning dobyns.
  14. Ok BR, i have about 200-250$ to grab my first bait caster reel and rod as a beginner. I used a wealth of information here, including some of y'alls tips, to buy my first spinning rig and am extremely happy with it (even if i went a little above my price point - Dobyns Sierra rod/pfluger supreme xt reel). I know these questions are posted through the site, but as a newbie getting direct and precise tips for particular set ups really hits home harder than reading general information - if that makes sense. I plan on getting this set up this weekend and giving bait casting a go. I know typically at minimum three rods is ideal, but i have spent so much just getting started i can't get a strictly hog rod and reel for thick cover after this second rig. Main source of fishing: Ponds, ponds, and ponds (until i can befriend a guy with a boat ha!) Main intended uses: Froggin, Jigs, Jerks, spooks and really anything else other than plastics and small lures (not sure if ill crank because i have even less idea on that than i do jigs and I'm fishing smaller ponds). Size: 7' MH? This seems to be the best all around from what i have read - although i have just seen some other threads that mention MM (this confuses me). Line: I have seen everything from 17# mono to 50 pound braid. As always i appreciate those who take the time to offer advice to us beginners, has to get taxing at some point! Todd To piggy back on my own novel, i have read a lot about fuegos and tatulas - they are definitely on my radar. I also really like the Dobyns i purchased, it feels great in my hand and really balanced - the mojo bass and st. croix premier didn't feel good to me with the pflueger but that was for my spinning set up.
  15. Assuming these aren’t carp (I will have to take a closer look next time), I will check into these tips.
  16. I hope not or I just feel stupid! I assumed they were bass, they were about the same size of some of the bigger ones I’ve seen on the pond. There were tons of mini waves throughout the pond that I read means bass are chasing bait fish. I could have completely misread the entire scenario too.
  17. So I came up on my favorite pond and I can see a bunch of bass floating near the surface in th middle of the pond and a few feet from vegetation on all sides of the pond. I tried a spook and they wouldn’t hit it. I’m still new at this so I kinda ran out of ideas on what to do and time. Any tips for lures/presentation to get these guys to react is much appreciated! it was partly cloudy and maybe 76 degrees outside at about 7:30pm.
  18. Well I ended up buying the Dobyns Sierra Series 6’9 M/F. I tried the st croix premier and the mojo bass. But the Dobyns and my supreme xt just felt so good together. It was above my price point but it just felt good in my hand. Thanks for all the help, I can’t wait to try the new rig out this evening.
  19. That's a good point. I will be pulling the trigger Monday and will be testing my completely new rig that evening (weather permitting, its been rainy all weekend in central ohio), i will definitely let you all know what i decide on! Thanks for all the advice!
  20. Hmm... Interesting, so its kind of preference to each user. I have read a lot on this forum about the material of guide rods. Is there a standard for what a minimum quality should be? I have seen guideswith zirconium, AO, microwave guides etc etc.
  21. That makes sense.. I am pretty much pond bound and from what i have caught so far, they are 1-2 pounds (i am sure there are some big gals in the ponds i just haven't caught them yet). I may lean for a shorter rod then, some of the ponds are larger and wide open but some are tucked in woods with only a few banks to wiggle into that really restricts my movement. I am relatively new to the game so i really can't buy all the stuff i need right away (i still want a BC and a third rod/reel but this stuff gets pricey as you all very well know). Todd
  22. I was in field and stream yesterday but their rod selection was poor (even the employee said it was a joke). There was a mojo bass there but was for bait caster. I have kinda narrowed it down to a st croix premier/avid, mojo bass and i have read a lot about the tatula being ok. I need to check out the fenwick to see what its all about. Quick side question... IF i were to go 6'6 in length, does that sacrifice feel or power? From what little i know, i have gathered the length is more related to cast distance? Do smaller guide rods improve feel and casting accuracy? Thanks for all the feedback as always.
  23. I plan on fishing Plastics, Wacky worms, some spinners, top water and maybe some jerk bait. I was thinking about doing 8lb mono and i am looking at 7ft rod. Basically, i want a good rod to match the Pflueger supreme and is able to withstand a 6-8 pound bass (assuming i may nab the king in the pond on a lucky day). I'm not hunting big lake trophy fish or anything like that. Just trying to hone my skills before i start really investing money on situational rigs. I have been doing a lot of research on Abu Garcias Veritas.. but i have concerns over the rod breaking from many reviews. I have also checked out the mojo bass / Daiwa Tatula XT / St Croix premier. I know it doesn't matter but ive been trying to match the reel color to the rod, and the reel is orange and black/charcoal. Ill check out those other rods you suggested as well, there are so many options to choose from and i jsut wantto make sure i get the best bag for my buck between 100-120$. Thanks for the tips!
  24. I just picked up a Pflueger Supreme XT 30x on a great deal and need some help on what rod to pair it with. I am still a novice and probably shouldn't have splurged for a reel like this one, but i got it for nearly 50% off on Amazons prime day. I basically fish ponds and am just using it as my all around pole until i pull the trigger on a BC setup. I have read a lot of these forums as a lurker and have gotten some great advice by just utilizing other peoples questions, but i am kinda looking for personalized advice on what is a good pole to match with the Supreme XT 30x for all around pond bass fishing. I have gathered that i should use an 8 pound mono line with a MF rod (maybe even a MH/F??), but whats a good medium rod to fit the supreme that wont run me 150$? Any and all advice helps, i'm still new to the game but really enjoy it thus far. I didn't realize how complex this sport is until i really took the plunge into it.
