  1. Any fish I've hooked deep on the ned was 100% my fault due to lack line management and bite detection. That number is maybe 5 fish out of 1,000??? I've seen more then 5 fish with senkos stuck in the exit end. If i ever do it again I'll make sure I give myself a 5 minute penalty.
  2. There's an old forum member who won the Hobie Susquehanna tournament at the end of July. He posted day one and two videos on youtube that give a little different look of smallmouth fishing.
  3. For whatever reason I moved the Fat Ika out of the rotation last fall and has been sitting on the sidelines since. I think I'll dedicate a rod tonight so it can be a player the next couple weeks.
  4. For those that use the flat worm, also check out the 5" hit worm for a bigger profile. In a lake infested with white perch, they aren't inclined to hit it as much as they do a flat worm.
  5. At times I keep too much tension on my line trying to keep in contact with baits. When drop shotting I have to remind my self I don't need to feel every little sunfish nip and at times slack line is necessary to get bit. After 5 minutes I'm back to full tension trying to feel for every peck and pebble.
  6. Guessing by your name you've fly fished. I believe growing up roll casting a fly rod is why I chose to cast side arm the majority of the time bass fishing. Can be quick and accurate casting to a target compared to over handing everything. I'll also go to my grave arguing "bait entry" is just important at times as accuracy is. Giving a bait a few skips at entry can elicit more strikes then a plop. Example would be skipping a trd to a weedline in 10' of water. That fleeing bait entry gets bit more then just an accurate cast to the edge IMO.
  7. Since Tackle Warehouse is nice enough to save your order history it's amusing looking back over the last 5 years. Looking at a 20 line order from 2017, there are items from it sitting ideal on a shelf and I wouldn't order half of those items again. Sure I read or saw something at the time and thought it was needed. At least I've hit the point of seeing a pattern to ordering since 2020.
  8. At times I'm sure others look at me and think "easy killer" when setting the hook. However it is a very measured approach depending on many factors such cover, amount of line out, depth, and angle. Snags are one of the reasons I shy away from heavy line and usually fish lighter then needed. I'd rather not be in a situation were the lure is not retrievable and your options are pull on or leave a length of 50 lb braid behind. Fly fishing adds a how different dynamic. The below image was result of pulling out of a tree after a missed strike.
  9. Tomorrows tournament will be... 52 miles round trip=$14.46 Electric only =??? No permit=$0.00 Entry=$60.00 Tackle=$30.00 Replacement line for the reel I blow up=$13.54 Need to win $118 to cover cost.
  10. Same with myself in the spring working it almost like a jerk bait. Think the majority of fish see so many suspending jerkbaits that a suspending lipless is different enough to get strikes.
  11. I took an older gentleman out last fall on a morning that ended up being a tough bite. My $$$ of tungsten weights and varying baits were humbled by his power worms and water gremlin split shots. Clinched right above the hook, nothing fancy about it.
  12. This post has been rolling awhile. Would have said a ned style bait the first few times a read it, however I've been taking my toddler to the local heavily pressured pond to give him some quick 15-30 minute trips and the float and fly has been the ticket. The constant action keeps him entertained. Using a size 12 copper john or pheasant tail nymph has caught LMB, crappie, 3 species of sunfish, rockbass, and a trout. Once I can get him to have a little more focus it will be a matter of time before I trick one of the large koi and carp into sipping it in.
  13. Won the big fish pot twice on a trd, both fish over 5 and a half which is large in my area. Not sure I'll have another 2 muskie day, let alone a 2 trd muskie day. I agree with bluebasser, the guys I've converted to trd lovers had to have the heavy weight aspect beat out of them.
  14. I would buy them in 12 or 18 packs if they would sell them at convenient stores. Canada craw has out caught all other colors in my local lakes. No other color needed.
  15. A 50-60 lb ray is going to require some icy hot after getting it in. Large rays are an unstoppable freight train until they tire out. Had what I assume was a large ray by the way it was pulling spool 300yrds of 50lb braid and there wasn't a thing I could do about it. I would guess that one would be around the 15/20 lb mark. A little unfortunate it's tail was cut as that was is primary defense. If you take your time and handle them correctly the barb is a non issue. Keep fingers away from the mouth too, they got a chomp. Time of year is everything, check the local knowledge if you want to target something specific. One of the best surf fishing trips I've done was a hop skip and a jump from there and caught countless 4'+ sharks. Spinners, bonnet heads, black tips, and a juvenile hammer head. Try to fish early or late as sharks will draw a crowd. I'll never forget the faces when the 5' spinner shark went full airborne 30 yards off shore as the beach walkers started their morning.
  16. You would be amazed how foreign that thought is to some people.
  17. I watch them terrorize the neighborhood back yard gardens. Majority of people have no idea what to do about them so I figure there had to be a market for it.
  18. Not sure why it took me this long to find this thread. Very intriguing for some reason. Took a few days to read through it, but seems to be a lack of residential rabbit catches. My wildlife trapping extent was needing a source of skulls mounts for a mammology class that I procrastinated on(was planing on picking up roadkill). Setup some snap traps out in the back field on rodent trails and whacked a deer mouse and meadow vole. Picking those skulls 3 days before they were due was a poor choice.
  19. Made the mistake of going out last night on the local pontoon rental hotbed on a beautiful evening. Pretty sure the fish don't care as they are in 15+ fow, but it becomes a little unsettling watching bumper boats being played 50 yards away. The guys trolling around for white perch would be the least of my concern. A more rigorous boating safety requirement or increased enforcement would go a long ways. The vast majority just don't know any better.
  20. This my exact "figure out" what they are doing approach on a similar described body of water.
  21. Outstanding. This is going to save me a serious about of weights.
  22. Zman followed closely behind by maxscent products. If you haven't tried maxscent yet give it a try. Promise they aren't a gimmick.
  23. Was fooled in last weeks lunker tournament by one that size. Felt the bite at the end of a lay down on a trig. Laid into it and he was already moving left so I'm screaming for the net. Makes 3 years in a row I've hooked a snapper off that tree. Without trebles they are pretty skilled at unhooking themselves.
  24. I do the same thing or fish before coming into work. It does make it tough to leave a bite at times. In the spring/fall I'll fish 7 days a week but the boat stays home for 5. That flexibility has kept me from moving up in my career, but I'm happy with the balance it's created.
  25. The wife got me one as a stocking stuffer. Absurdly huge describes it well. Literally a palm sized crank.
