Peg the hook, bury the eye in the bait and push a short piece of mono line thru the bait, thru the eye, I keep some 25 or 30 pound el cheapo line just for this, in a pinch I have used a tip of a tooth pic,,, I had similar issues to what looked like your pick, I went to a 5/0 hook, looks to me like you don’t have enough hook to penetrate the doubled over bait,,, start by pegging the bait,,,

You body fat content also has a lot to do with your ability to store electrolytes. You skinny guys don’t have enough body fat to store electrolytes so you got to really pace yer self and STAY hydrated.

I get a smile every time I think about this. I’ve been in the front, wearing my rear deck partner out, he switched to what I was throwing after about my 3-4 fish. Then started complaining about fishing “used water”, lol, so I put his butt up front on the trolling motor, then it was his line,,,,or my line lol. I’m stubborn, if I catch a fish fairly quickly on a bait, that’s the pattern for me! Lol

Had a guy take issue with me fishing in front of his dock, he never said a word, just disappeared around to the opposite side of his house and started throwing rocks at me OVER his house, This was on a private lake I had permission to fish as a member of the HOA, when I finished for the day, returned to my truck, it was spray painted down the side KEEP OUT. This turned into a major deal, This was 30 years ago when I didn’t give a d**n. Let’s just say he regrets his actions to this very day.

I find it more comfortable to handle the cast with my ,right hand, switch rod to left and reel with my right, everyone I know does it this way, so to each his own I guess. I didn’t get that advice or “ trick” when I started so that’s why I mentioned it.

If you are right handed, you will most likely be more comfortable with a right hand retrieve reel. When casting , turn the handle up, cast with it "on top" so to speak.
