  1. My oldest reel is my 23 year old ABU 4600C. I've done basic maintenance on it, and it's been a great reel. I'm still using it. I have newer low profile Quantum and Lews LFS also. I like them too.
  2. My favourite Jitterbug fishing is at night.I like a dark, humid night. I like the standard black Jitterbug in 5/8 oz. Second would be the last half hour before dark, with the same black Jitterbug. Jitterbugs and night/ dusk fishing go together like apple pie and ice cream.
  3. ol'crickety, I hope these things never happen.
  4. I'm not sure there is really a best reel in this range. I've been using a size 2500 Sahara for two years now and it's worked well. If you like an AR switch on your reel, check out Diawa or Lews. They make some nice reels on this price range also.
  5. The Pedigo Spinrite was invented by Cecil Pedigo in Bowling Green KY, in the late 1950s. It's a cut face tail spinner, and was available in 1/4 and 1/2 oz sizes. Some were produced with a marabou feather on the tail. It was popular with Tennessee and Kentucky fisherman. Mostly cast over deep water and allowed to fall, and fished with a lift drop retrieve. I've never used one, but it always looked like a good fish catcher. Has anyone had any experience with this old tailspinner?
  6. A-Jay, thought I might mention I weighed myself this morning at 203. The weight is coming right off, and I feel better with every pound I lose. My doctor appointment is next Friday morning, and I'm looking forward to it. I'm sure the doc will be pleased.
  7. Mike, I agree the new style cans are a pain. My neighbor bought one and ended up throwing it out. He found an older one at a yard sale. I won't buy one myself.
  8. Years ago, I had some crappie on a stringer while bank fishing. I walked down the bank and heard commotion coming from where I had my fish. I quickly walked down there, and a huge snapper was chomping into my crappie. I waved my arms and he swam off. The fish were no good. I've never actually caught a snapper. Ive seen quite a few over the years.
  9. This style of bass fishing is probably gone now for many of us. Are there any BR members who enjoy bass fishing with no electronics? My older brother taught me what to look for. Certain types of cover, changes in the shoreline, something different in an area that looks the same. I still like this style of bass fishing. There's a feeling of accomplishment when you pull a good bass from an area that you discovered without electronics. It's the very basic style of bass fishing. Do you enjoy fishing with an old school approach, without any electronics?
  10. Lately I've been walking the banks and fishing. I've got a few more pounds Id like to lose, and walking banks is good exercise. Plus, as has been shown, bank fishing can be productive also.
  11. I can only think of one thing: people who trash the lakes, and don't respect the areas they fish in. I have zero tolerance for these low lifers.
  12. Like Catt, I bank fish two or three times a week. The worst part for me is weeds and moss. Catt, I see snakes quite a bit when I'm walking the banks, but luckily for me, no water moccasins. We have a water snake that looks similar, but is non venomous. We're too far north for true water moccasins.
  13. Well, tomorrow is mothers day.My moms been gone now for thirteen years, and I still think of her often. Moms really should have more than just one special day. They're the ones who are usually keeping the house running smoothly with the kids, while dads out there working. They pack school lunches, cook meals, clean house, help with homework, and run the kids to sports practice and school events. Many of them do all these things, while still working a full or part time job, to help with the family finances. They deserve a thank you from us. I hope all the moms out there have a Happy Mother's Day.
  14. Im 66. I retired at 63. I sat around for two months and decided to work part time, which I still do, about 20-24 hrs per week. I make some extra money this way, and stay active.
  15. My wife and I saw it from our backyard. She got several photos also. It was an impressive sight.
  16. I don't have a 2500 size Revros, but have a 1000 size. I bought mine two years ago, for trout and panfish, but have used it many times bass fishing with six pound co poly line. It's worked great, and IMO a nice looking reel also.
  17. I've seen many reports of the cicadas in southern Missouri. They haven't made it up my way yet, but Iook for them soon.
  18. I've been following along with A-Jays ongoing thread on working to stay lean for quite a while now. In a past post, I told about my pre type 2 diabetes diagnosis six months ago. My weight has never been a huge problem for me. I'm 6'1 and was at 190. Over time, my weight went up to 235. Of course the weight was in the wrong places. When I weighed myself this morning I weighed 206. Basically, I cut back on all sugars and sweets, and also my portion sizes. I've realized I can eat far less, and still feel full, because of my shrinking stomach. My target goal is 190, and, I'm sure I can get there. My A1C level came in at 6.1, which is very good. I don't have a weight room to exercise like A-Jay. But I'm doing regular sit ups and leg lifts to tighten up my gut. Also, walking more, which, my favourite type of walking is walking around the lake and bank fishing. It's good exercise. It's a weird thing when you lose weight. The weight comes off your whole body, as well as your stomach. An example, my wedding ring now slides on and off my finger easily. It didn't do this before. I feel much lighter on my feet, and, I feel I'm moving a little quicker now. If you need to lose weight, this plan may work for you. And, lastly, I'd like to thank A-Jay for his thread. It's inspiring, and has helped me reach my goals. If I can do it, anyone can.
  19. I always tried to prioritize it like this. 1: family, work, fishing. Family is first always. If I can't go fishing because of family or work, so what? I'll go fishing another day.
  20. I'm 66 and pretty much retired. I fish quite a bit also. From experience, my advice is to not become obsessed with catching a DD bass. At some point, you'll probably catch one.
  21. I would try a plastic worm or lizard for sure. Fish them slowly on or near bottom. If the water is pretty clear, downsize to a 4" bait. Good luck.
  22. Try crimping the shot on the end of your line, then slide it up and down to around 10" or 12" . Then move the shot where you need it and tie on your hook. This creates a small groove in the split shot, and you can crimp it on without damaging your line. I learned this from WRB. Or use a sliding sinker with a Peg It. You could use a bullet weights, or one of the cylinder style weights. Both can work.
  23. I was thinking bank fishing, but in my boat I carry more things. Landing net and small tool kit are two more.
