  1. Glen Lau, Doug Hannon, and Tom Mann have all mentioned using a tactic of churning up a shallow cove with your outboard to lure bass into feeding. The idea is that you find a shallow area near deep water that contains some vegetation. You drive through repeatedly using your outboard to churn the water and chop up some of the vegetation and then you anchor nearby, eat your lunch for 30 minutes or so, and wait. The theory is that you have started up the food chain by dislodging the small organisms in the vegetation and the baitfish and bluegill will soon arrive to eat with the bass coming along shortly after. You are essentially creating your own personal feeding opportunity for the entire food chain of fish. Glen wrote that this is especially useful in the heat of summer during the day when the food chain is lethargic. I'm curious if anyone has tried or regularly uses this tactic? I'm always eager to hear the opinions of everyone on this board anytime I read something that piques my curiosity.
  2. Tacos for all members with fish in their avatar!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. There are times of the year where I will lose as many lures as I catch fish in one day, but I just haven't found anything more fun that fighting a bass out of a brush pile. If you are worried about the cost here is what you should try: 1. Pegged t-rig with a worm. Buy VMC hooks (EWG or worm) and Yum Dingers. You are out pocket change when you break off. Heck, my best producer in the spring is a weightless UV Speed Worm on a 3/0 worm hook that I jiggle into the thickest brush piles I can find. When I break off I don't even lose a sinker. 2. Walmart sells Strike King jig packs that come with a jig with a decent hook and two or three trailers. At my local Walmart they are $2.46. I buy them by the dozen. This is the only jig I throw in the huge piles of mess. I won't risk my Sieberts. 3. Sometimes you might need to try a treble lure. I buy Cotton Cordell lipless cranks from Walmart for $1.96. I have a whole bin of them. I will skip them under ANYTHING that looks fishy and not give a single crap if I can't get it back out. 4. Hollow-body frogs can be hung up, but it's a rare thing. Give them a try, especially in the surface vegetation. My biggest fish last year was in LESS than one foot of water. My biggest fish so far this year was in just about one foot of water. Throw into the worst mess you kind find and wait for the "tap"...
  4. Sorry I just saw this. The boat that you and I talked about didn't have a floor either. The leaking rivets are caused by grown men my size standing on the hull between the braces. After I fixed up all the rivets in the boat I repaired I then made two sections of removable floor using treated plywood with some 1x2 framing. I made the floor removable so I could drag the boat around more easily by myself and then just drop the front and middle floors in and go fishing.
  5. Nor was I suggesting that.
  6. When Michael Jordan played for the Chicago Bulls was he "sponsored" by Nike? Nope. You don't need "sponsors" in the NBA. Did he have a contract with Nike that earned him eleventy gazillion dollars? Yup. You don't need a "sponsor" to have a YouTube page. It's unfair to judge them based on their need/desire to earn some money. They would be fools to not make a good living if they have the opportunity. Michael Jordan's basketball expertise isn't questioned because he was smart enough to make a huge fortune. Just because they make money doesn't make them crooked or insincere but they will push their products because it's in their interest. Would you expect to see Michael in a brand other than Nike? No one questions @Glenn 's sincerity in helping us all become better bass fisherman and he spends an enormous amount of time doing just that. This is a huge committment for @Glenn and it has to consume the vast majority of his time to the exclusion of all else. But there's a reason there are name brands, etc. that we aren't supposed to mention on his website. Generous people can still have smart business sense.
  7. I’ll fish with Bob but John can get the hell out of my boat.
  8. ***head slap*** ?
  9. My guess is that if you really wanted to know the weight you would either carry a scale or take good pics of the length/width/girth using a tape measure or known object for reference. This could be a 4 to 6 pound fish and you won’t ever know for sure. But regardless of weight this is a big, healthy, very beautiful fish! I would love to catch her. Congratulations! ??
  10. I bought a leaky jon, sanded the hull, and sealed every single rivet (several leaking rivets and one rivet that was completely missing) with this: https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/3M-Marine-Adhesive-Sealant-5200/?N=5002385+3293241623&rt=rud I painted it and used it for two seasons and it never leaked a single drop. I sold it for twice what I paid for it.
  11. I don't keep exact stats on this but I'm going to say from age 35 to age 42. Or at least that's what it felt like.
  12. I am being completely serious when I say I am nearly tempted to find out if my boat will float my trailer. I’m just too competitive!
  13. Hey, I'm 51. I'm not sure that I'd be much of a stud if I got MYSELF a woman twice my age...
  14. All 3 of my local Walmart’s are doing fishing clearance. I bought six Zman Original Chatterbaits for $1.05 each. Six RattLTraps for $2.45 each. Four Berkeley Shad Raps for $2.65 each. You get the idea. I ended up with two full bags of hard baits for about $60.
  15. Right now I would buy $100 worth of lipless crankbaits because I'm snagging/losing about two per trip. ?
  16. But I want to be the world’s greatest fish psychic.
  17. Okay again, anywhere within 100 miles of me a year with 73 bass is a good year. And that's fishing every week. Wow. I need to travel.
  18. Yes it's another water temp question, but things have been so screwy here that I have to ask. I am familiar with swinging water temps in spring and fall but I've not fished through what is going on now. If you saw my last post in the catch thread I was exclaiming about water surface temps being above 90 in the afternoon. That's pretty high here. I usually don't see anything above 87 or 88. Well now we have had four days of on/off chilly rain and air temps have gone from highs of 88 to highs of 72. I just checked water data online and the surface temps have dropped 4-6 degrees in the past four to five days. I have to assume that the water is high and muddy from the influx also. I've never seen a drastic drop like this in our hottest time of year. This is usually drought. I'm going out tomorrow and my gut is telling me this is a good thing and shallow, loud moving baits may be the deal. Am I way off? Am I more likely looking at something more like a lake turnover? I think the plague is now affecting the weather. Any thoughts are appreciated. UPDATE: One of the two lakes I fish most frequently has turned over on the shallower north end. Fish kill. That sucks.
  19. Water temp was 91 degrees by the time I got off the water today! 90-flippin’-1 degrees!!! All the fish I got today were already broiled...
  20. Peg small weight on a T-rig with any plastic you like on a worm hook or EWG. If you like braid, put a leader on it so you can break off easier. Start throwing it into the tightest, messiest, gnarliest tangles of brush/wood/leaves/branches that you find in a foot of water (or deeper). You will snag and you will break off. You will also catch fish. Once you start catching fish you will find that the hooks/plastics you lose to snags are WELL worth it for the fish you catch.
  21. Please take a look at this forecast. I am totally open to fishing either Thursday or Friday from about 5am to 1pm. I'm leaning toward Thursday because the the barometer is lower and it's closest to the initial drop of the barometer. I am fishing a lake that has absolutely no shelter so I'm likely to get wet but I feel like getting out as close to the beginning drop of the barometer is going to be best, plus the temp is dropping and it shouldn't have any effect on the fish in the first day of the drop but it could by Friday. The black line is the barometer and the blue line with the arrows is the wind speed. Would you choose one day over the other? If so, why? Thanks Update: I would also prefer to fish before the bottom drops out but it’s not possible. Also, I just talked with a guy much more experienced on the lake I was headed to and he told me NOT to go to that lake on Thursday. So I will either pick a different lake for Thursday or go on Friday
  22. Not in central Illiinois you didn't....LOL.
