I have an ultra light 2 piece, 6'4" St. Croix Trout series rod and occasionally when I am trout fishing I will hook a bass. I have not had any problem with it overbending, with the 2 piece connection or anything else. I'm always careful with that rod, to begin with because it feels so light compared to my Dobyns bass rods. You should be fine with using something light and 2 piece for travel

I have a Sierra 734C and I use it mostly to throw 3/8 and 1/2 ounce jigs So I agree 4 power

I like the Lew's Tournament MB for all of my shallow/midcranking 6.8:1 (28 inches per turn) It can speed up and slow down to just the right speed.

If money isn't an option then go with the Avid X. If you want to go cheaper than there a bunch of CB specific rods that will fit the bill. I for one don't believe higher end rods make a huge difference in cranking like they do in other applications....so IMO you could easily find a great CB rod for much less than what the Avid X sells for if you wanted to save a few bucks

I have a Fury 734C, 704CB and a Sierra 734C and 735C For topwater and jerk baits I use a shorter Abu Garcia rod with a moderate action specifically for those 2 applications

I have 10-15 lbs Daiwa J Braid on my spinning rods and use 6-10 lbs fluro leaders on all of them. I only use the Braid because of castability and line management on my spinning rods On casting it's Sufix 832 with a Sufix Mono leader. Same reason....I can cast braid further and it is easier to manage. Mono leaders for some stretch and ability to land fish Cranking is all straight fluro...12 lbs Sniper Assassin for both Shallow and deep cranking

"Dobyns Fury 705CB with a Lews Mach I, 12# fluoro used mainly with crank baits and heavier spinner baits Dobyns Fury 734C with a Quantum S3 reel, 40# braid to 12# fluoro leader used for everything else" I have both of these and should fit your needs well. The only change would be to potentially change to a mono leader. Depending on how hard you set the hook you may be better off with a little stretch in your leader. The 734C is very versatile and is also good for chatterbaits and spinnerbaits

I have a few Dobyns Fury and Sierra models....I like both. The Sierra does have a softer tip but I knew that going in and I like my rods to have a little softer tip because I only use braid to a short leader. The Dobyns line is high quality and offers lots of options from the Fury, Sierra and Champion lines

Don't get used to it.....if you don't like it then go with a full grip. I have 2 St. Croix spinning rods....one full grip and one split grip There are so many choices out there you shouldn't have to compromise

The actions on the Sierra are a little softer than the Fury I have a Sierra 734C and a Fury 734C. I do find the Sierra to be a little better balanced and more sensitive than the Fury. I typically use braid to a short leader on all my setups so I prefer my actions to be a bit softer

Fast tapers are good for most presentations that use single hooks Moderate tapers are needed for crankbaits and baits that have treble hooks. The parabolic taper helps you land more fish. Extra fast is typically used for Flipping and pitching but there is a school of thought that you should have a Moderate more Parabolic rod for flipping and pitching. You could start a whole additional thread on Extra Fast or Moderate for Flipping and Pitching!!!

Action refers to the circumference and power associated with a rod Light Medium/Light Medium Medium/Heavy Heavy Mag Heavy or Flipping The stouter action in the rod the more power you have to control the fish. Taper refers to how fast or slow the tip is and where on the blank the rod flexes when it loads Moderate (more parabolic - bends closer to the middle of the blank) Fast (bends closer to the tip and is stiffer) Extra Fast (bends even closer to the tip and is even stiffer)

If you can only have one then the Medium is the way to go. I use a Medium Light for hair jigs, ned rigs and drop shots and a Medium for shaky heads and all the other finesse applications. If you only have 1 rod then you can easily do all of those finesse applications on a Medium.

I have 3 Fury rods and recently bought 2 Sierra series. The Sierra is worth the extra money IMO I like the Fury rods but the Sierra blank is a little more sensitive and the components are a little better on the Sierra. The Fury is a great rod for money but the Sierra is a step up and a good compromise between the Fury and the Champion series. You won't be disappointed by spending the extra money to get the Sierra

Paul....Abu just put gen 1 Ike series crank rods on Sale at their website. They are under a $100 and great rods.

Many of you may know that at iCast Abu Garcia launched a Gen 2 version of the Ike Series rods that are supposed to hit the stores in September. They have some updated features and a new grip. In preparation for the new launch, they are selling Gen 1 rods at a pretty steep discount online at www.abugarcia.com I own the jerkbait/topwater rod and the deep diving crankbait rod. Both are glass and are pretty solid rods....they are a steal at the current discount price. I don't work for Abu but just wanted to let the forum know that these are available at a steep discount. It's always great to get good rods as cheap as possible!!

I would try to increase your budget slightly and go for a Dobyns Sierra 734. It's not green and it's a big jump up from the Fury. IMO the Sierra is the best rod in the $150-$200 price point. If you are only going to have 1 rod....that's the one I would get

BTW just to close this question out. I ended up buying an Okuma Inspira for my Finesse Spinning Rod and an Okuma RTX for my Medium All Purpose Spinning rod. Both of these reels have been great to fish with. Ultralight, excellent drag and really solid for the money. They are definitely upgrades to the Pflueger Presidents in looks, performance and weight.

If you drop shot a ton then maybe buy a specialty drop shot rod. For example, Daiwa has the Tatula Elite Series. Cody Meyer designed a rod that is designed just for drop shots. It's a 7' Med Light They are $180 but if that is the technique you use the most then maybe buy a more expensive rod for that application. Most companies are doing these types of rods now if you don't like Daiwa.

Tackle warehouse does discounts a few times a year that include Dobyns Rod I have seen some discounted prices on Amazon for some of their higher level rods. Some of these are direct from Amazon and others are from 3rd party stores. You may want to see what retailers are selling Dobyns rods on Amazon and contact those retailers directly to see if they will work a deal for you

I have a whole series of Dobyn's Fury casting rods for every application. Jigs, Plastics, Flipping, frogs, Chatterbaits. If you were going to upgrade just 1 rod to a $200+ higher level rod with a better blank and more sensitivity....what would you upgrade? Jig rod? Flipping Stick? Other? and what Make/model would you upgrade to?
