  1. Ran down to *** to browse around their used stuff and pick up a few things. Came across a mint Doomsday Tackle Co "The 47" rod that felt pretty good. It's a 7'3" MH MF and they had it marked at $45. It felt good and was in mint condition so I picked it up. Got it home and mounted a Tatula CT Type R that I use for lipless cranks Don't know anything about them and not seeing much about them online other than a review by ***. Curious if any of you have any experience with them. I'll take a picture and post in a few minutes.
  2. I like my Shimanos for certain things and Daiwa for others. I've got Curado DC and SLX DC, a 2018 Bantam and a few SLX and SLX MGLs, but the Shimano models I've been most happy with lately are my Curado MGL 151 and Curado MGL 71. Yep,.. I like my lefty reels. The MGLs just cast so nice and smooth that they have become my go - to reels for techniques where I'm long casting moving baits like cranks, poppers and spinnerbaits.
  3. Thanks for the update. I will probably be at the spring classic sale like normal if they have the right stuff on sale.... Though lately they seem to be moving away from sales on name brand stuff and focusing more on their BPS branded stuff. I DID stop doing the trade-in program though when I started realizing it only equated to about a 15% discount. I can buy what rods or reels I want on other sales and save the same amount and still have my old stuff I can give to family, friends, or local kids.
  4. I haven't noticed that so much on Academy as I have on Sportsmans Warehouse. They do offer crazy sales if you catch them right though! I got a pair of Revo Winch reels for $79 each one time, and also got some Revo STX for the same $79 each when they cleared out the Revo3 generation for the Revo4 generatiion.
  5. Somebody else posted on that too about the same time. Cool technology, but not my thing. Last thing I want is having another part of life impacted by my phone,... Not to mention having to deal with charging a battery or having it die while fishing.
  6. Just my opinion, but I think they may have gone too far. I understand that some techies may like it, but not for me. The last thing I want is a fishing reel that needs to be linked to my dang phone! And have to recharge the reel everytime I wanted to use it. I like that I get away from those things while fishing. Don't need my phone in every aspect of life My Shimano DC reels don't need any of that, and honestly,... I don't see the need for them either. Cool technology and appreciate them thinking out of the box, but not my thing and no interest
  7. I realize this is a resurrected thred, but thought I'd reply with what I am currently using. I've got a few of these Plano boxes that have been working pretty well for me. They have 4 latches so they stay closed pretty well and have pre marked hook and weight slots for 1/0 to 6/0 hooks and others for different weights. I have one for EWG hooks and another for standard offset worm hooks
  8. I get most of mine in bulk from a place up in Alexandria MN where my brother lived. I believe their plastics are made by Big Bite, but not sure. Though he has moved so I probably won't go up there as ofteb anymore ?. May have to see about ordering them. I fill in the gaps as needed with Yamamoto or Berkley. I typically like green pumkpin, baby bass, or a green pumpkin w/ silver belly that they carry.
  9. For me, price only sets the ceiling I am willing to go up to, but doesn't necesarily mean quality to me. I go by feel in the hand and how balanced it is. I've got cheaper rods that lay nice in my hand and have put more expensive rods back on the rack. For instance,... I've never liked the feel and balance of most Loomis rods. They may be popular and I know they have their fans, but I'm just not one of them. Kind of like on the gun market,... I don't like Glocks even though so many people brag on them. I'm honestly not overly concerned about guides and reel seats either. I must not be very rough with my equipment because in all my different rods over the years, I have have only had a couple issues with line guides, and only one issue with a rod seat. If they feel good in my hand with a reel on them, and the price isn't above the ceiling,... I will try them. I have rods ranging from $35 Berkley Lightning Rods to $350 Dobyns Extremes and lots in between from H20 Express, Lews. Fenwick, Phenix, Daiwa, Falcon, etc,... Not real brand loyal, but I do have more Dobyns than any other
  10. Is that Mojo MHMF the 7ft "Spinnerbait" model? If so, I have that rod and while I dont have a Champion 704, I do have that Mojo rod and know it has a pretty soft tip. The Champion will be a faster rod with a stiffer tip similar to the 7'1" Kaden 714c I have. The Sierra would be closer to that Mojo, but with slightly stiffer tip, not quite as moderate of action and more backbone, but much closer than the Champion. I have two of those Mojo Spinnerbait rods and I use one for a Whopper Plopper 90 and the other has small chatterbait on it. Not a big Mojo fan, but I like that model. If you're wanting aomething similar to that Mojo,... You might want to look at the 705cb
  11. I like my swim jigs! I fish them like I would a spinnerbait, but want less thump/ vibration, like in clearer water. I typically go spinnerbait in the darker, muddier water and swim jigs when the water is clearer or I want a more subtle action.
  12. We don't have many either, but in the spring we tend to get some shad floating in cool weather and our shad have a little darker back on them, so I figure the Golden Shiner swimjig with a brown backed Largo Shad may imitate them pretty good.
  13. I don't have a Champ 704 to compare,... Only the 734. The only 7' Dobyns I have is a Fury 703c and some Fury and Champ 705cb crankbait rods. The only ones I can compare are the Fury, Sierra, and Champion 734c,... And a Kaden 744c I guess. I DO have a Fury 733c and a Fury 703c that I can compare and like Boomstick said,... The difference between them is not huge.
  14. I ordered my first jigs from Sieberts this past fall and ordered that Golden Shiner on one of his swim jigs. Have it all rigged up to try this spring to simulate the baitfish we see here. Plan to put a shiner colored paddletail on it.
  15. ^^Agreed^^ For the lures mentioned, I prefer the Sierra series as well. My Champion 734 has a texas rigged worm on it at the moment.
  16. I get what you're saying. I just didn't feel he was being condescending. Felt he was just saying not enough difference to differentiate. Agree to disagree,....
  17. I agree. The bag is worth $10-15 and the bins are a couple bucks a piece, then a good number of hard baits, which typically go for $2-$3 at the local bait shop by us for used. I see a few Rapala, what looks like a Wally Diver, various other cranks, a couple lipless, a Jawbreaker and a few Mepps Fury and Rooster spinnerbauts. Seems like a mixed bag of smallie, walleye, and northern lures. I'd say $40 - $50, but only if you will use most of those items.
  18. Wow! What an attitude. Tom is making very valid points that 1/2 and 3/4 oz jigs both fall roughly in the middle of most JWR rod ranges, therefore there shouldn't be a need for two rods considering the overlap in actual jig weights between various company's 1/2oz and 3/4oz jigs. Valid point! His comments of price point seems valid too since the only suggestions being acknowledged are NRX, Steez and Megabass rods. You don't ask people's honest opinions and then mock them for giving their honest opinions! Especially when they are coming from such an experienced source. If you don't agree, then all you have to do is say thanks and move on. People can obviously make their own decisions, but valid points are still valid. Just my objective opinion!
  19. Ok,... I'll play! ? Obviously it is near impossible to guess from looking at one image, but here goes..... Pinion teeth on second image look sharper and cupped, so I will guess it is the bad one that is geary and being replaced, followed by the first image starting to show wear and be geary. Third image is the brass gear I assume is a micro gear from Shimano, which leaves the last one being the older aluminum gear from 2007
  20. Dobyns ratings were a little confusing to me too, because a 5 power CB rod is not equal to a 5 power jig rod, which is not equal to a 5 power swimbait rod. Think of the power ratings being focused within their area of purpose. A 5 or 6 power CB rod will have more power than a 3 or 4 power CB rod. In the utility purpose, jigs, TR, spinnerbaits,... A 5 power will be higher power than a 2 or 3 power, but cant really be compared to the flipping or swimbait ranges 5 power because that genre of rods is supposed to be heavier, therefore are on a higher scale.
  21. Same for me. Palomarbfor all my lure connections. Always wet it before setting and havent had issues. Uni to uni for all my leader connections.
  22. My favorite all around, multipurpose rod is the Dobyns Sierra 734c. Others have mentioned the Champion series, but in my opinion they are a faster rod than the Sierra series. The Sierra seems to be slower and a better compromise between a fast and moderate actions. I have used my 734c for everythi,g from jigs to swim jigs, chatterbaits and spinnerbaits, as well as some topwater and square bills. Its rated a Heavy, but Dobyns run light and I would call it more of a Medium Heavy. Technically it is rated for 1/4 - 1oz. If you want a slightly lighter rod, check out the 733c. It's a Medium Heavy, but fishes like a heavier Medium to me.
  23. Like others have said, I don't baby them, but I do take care of them. Rod socks on most, reel covers on the nicer stuff. Socks and covers are removed when they come out of the rod locker and stay off til the day is done or they go back into the locker. Setups are pulled from the boat in the fall and stored in racks in the garage with socks and covers during the offseason.
  24. I believe the Tournament MP is the replacement version of your Tournament MB. I'm not a fan of the new ACB brakes on the Lews either. Might be ok for longer casting reels, but I really didn't like it on my Pro SP skip and pitch model. I've been pretty impressed with the Shimano Curado MGLs in both the 71 and 151 (Lefty models). They palm nice to me and are nice and smooth casting and retrieving!
  25. Nothing specific at the moment,... Just see them on there when I browse and didn't know what I was looking at. Appreciate all the information!! May have to check them out sometime. I've seen them when I stopped by their store. I think the only one I picked up was a Destroyer. Pretty light!!
