  1. Visiting my girlfriend's dad in Atlanta (specifically Roswell) this weekend for Easter. Roswell is very close to the chattahoochee, so I figure that is where I'll go, anyone from the immediate area that can point me in a good direction? (No boat). Thanks!
  2. First tried the ned rig yesterday at a small pond I had never fished before. Got 5 largemouth and a faaat bluegill, one of the largemouth was a PB (see profile pic). Not the biggest around but my biggest so far. 4 of them were on a cabelas bed jig head (like an offbrand shroomz head) with a 3" watermelon/red flake senko, the other 2 were on the same head but with a reactive smallie beaver in watermelon. It was pretty windy so I was using the 1/8 heads, 20lb braid with 10lb fluro leader. So so pleased with the turnout that I picked up some 1/15 shroomz today.
  3. I've always used a tackle box, and always got aggravated at it. Recently I've started using a backpack instead, with trays. Everything is absolutely 100x more organized, and I can quickly tailor the bag to that day. I should also say I shore fish and have to trek about a half mile to my spot through the woods so its even better now. Anyone else using backpacks? Today's load:
  4. Haha, nope, I picked the right branch from the get go, my mos got closed out to reenlistment and I ended up going army from there. Got a medical though I only had to deal with the doggies for a year
  5. So like the meppes minnow comet! Thank you!
  6. Found it in a tackle box downstairs. My dad didn't know much about it. Google came up with nothing. I assume this must be for live bait? Worm or minnow? The hook configuration is what throws me off a little bit. Two minnows side by side?
  7. Like another poster, I picked up a Curado 300E from cabelas on sale for 149. Super excited, my first baitcaster
  8. As many others have mentioned, I usually recommend a S&W Sport II (the newer II has a forward assist and dust cover). You can get them around 600 depending on where you shop. It is a good quality rifle for a great price, and can always be upgraded as you learn the weapon and learn what you like and don't like. There is no need to spend a crap ton of money on a blinged out rifle if you dont need the blingy parts. Building is always fun, and it makes it easier to swallow a higher priced rifle when you bite it off in little chunks as you go. For a first rifle however, there are many things you need to learn but if you are just slightly mechanically inclined it is not hard to do, there are just things you need to pay attention to (i.e., lots of people dont grease the barrel nut or receiver extension but it needs to be done, some people dont think you need to stake the castle nut, etc etc). Be aware that to PROPERLY assemble a rifle requires a bit of investment in proper tools and may not be worth it if your only plan is for one rifle. Other good brands that are affordable are Colt, FN, Daniel Defense, Bravo Company, SOLGW. There are many great brands but I am not going to recommend a 2 thousand dollar+ rifle to you as a first rifle. Some basic questions I ask when people ask this: -Budget? -Are you planning on putting optics on it immediately (i.e. purchase an optic at the same time) -If yes, what type of optic? -Realistic distance you will shoot most often? -Would you prefer fixed or collapsible stock? Those usually narrow it down greatly. FYI this is sort of my job so if you have any questions at all feel free to PM me.
  9. I am looking around the $200 range, I prefer to go with a US made rod, and I love my st croix. I was looking at G.Loomis recently though, saw them in a local shop and didnt know they were US made. and yes, that walleye would have been good eating too had i taken my cooler that night!
  10. i wish i had read this before yesterday. I had magnum flukes in my bag and never thought to use them, i was throwing daredevils rigged weedless with a grub trailer and some jerkbaits, came up dry though. I had really high hopes for this dude i just rigged up :-/
  11. Little intro since the headline is probably quite vague. I have been fishing all my life, but it was with whatever rod my dad handed me (spinning), and that was that. 90% of my fishing growing up was for northern pike in minnesota. Fast forward to last year, went through a divorce and rediscovered fishing. Now I go every day I can. With this I have a deep interest in learning more of the equipment side and its affects on the fish you get. Again, growing up it was just throw a daredevil on what you had and go. Now Im learning that some lures should be tied on and some need swivels and oh my I get overwhelmed. Now, I shore fish for 3 species from my one secret spot, bass, walleye, and northern pike (in NE Ohio). Primary tactics are senkos and flukes for bass, jigs for walleye, and recently started modifying daredevils for weedless with grub trailers for the pike. I just learned about drop shotting and have tried it twice so far with no luck, but still excited about it. Onward... I have two rods at the moment, both spinning. -Shakespeare (got it in a combo from gander) Wild Series, 6'6" Medium Action, 8-14lb, with an old shimano baitrunner 250, loaded with (iirc) 20lb braid. This is my current go to rig, I use everything on it. I used this reel with a St Croix Premier until it snapped and got this until i get the croix fixed. -Daiwa Strike SK-12 6'6" Medium Light action 8-12lb, with the shakespeare reel that came from the combo. Has the same line on it, but I have it loaded up with a 3' leader of sufix 10lb fluro with a drop shot hook on. I figured the light action was better for drop shot, this rig was my backup until i rigged it for the drop. I have quite a few jerkbaits/crankbaits but rarely use them due to weeds, but I would use them with the shakespeare rod. A few days ago I got a Shimano Curado 300E as a birthday present. It is my first baitcaster. Which brings us to the question! Given what I have, and what I fish for and what techniques I use primarily, what type of action or weight should I get for the curado, and/or how would i reorganize my tactics with regards to what I am doing now with this addition? I am doing all the research I can but it is overwhelming and cant help but worry if i am using the wrong techniques with the wrong rods. To this point, I am looking at the St Croix Avid X, 7', medium fast, 10-17lb. Thank you for making it this far! A 22" walleye for your time (PB, nothing crazy but not bad from shore).
