It dawned on me a couple of days ago that Veterans Day is right around the corner, this coming Monday as a matter of fact. For the past several years I’ve always lost sleep during that 24 or so hours on this day as I spend it both calling and taking calls from old Army buddies. One of them, an old Colonel, has even organized conference calls which is always nice. We’ll spend hours sharing stories, remembering friends lost, laughing and crying. We’ve even made plans to visit a couple of fallen friends at Arlington, although a date hasn’t been set yet. Maybe we’ll lock one down this year. Our wives, including mine, know to give us our space during these conversations as those times and experiences can only be shared with our friends who were there. By the time November the 12th rolls around, our conversations will be forgotten until the following year, but our special bond will not. So, should you know of a friend who once shared their canteen with you or marched alongside you, give them a call on this Veterans Day and let them know you’re thinking of them. It is a special day for those of us who were there not only for country, but more so for each other. It is a day where our bonds should be reaffirmed. Happy Veterans Day.
