One good thing about that model and the larger display 2014 year models, is the non-SI versions can share the SI/DI/2D from a SI unit so if you want dual SI units, you only need one SI unit to supply data for both. And all versions can support the 360 transducer (2D units, DI units, and SI units) since the 360 is an Ethernet accessory.

I doubt it will equal the 798. No one really knows since they were just released this past week.

You are correct about SI and shoot-thru. Humminbird's Down Imaging transducer is suitable for a shoot-thru application. All the Down Imaging units come with the XNT 9 DI T transom transducer. The XIH 9 DI T is the same one but comes with epoxy instead of the transom bracket. Another option is a Quad Beam transducer that has three sonar crystals. The center one is a Dual Beam 83/200 kHz and the left and right crystals are 455 kHz 2D sonar. It is referred to as the poor man's Side Imaging. It can be used for shoot-thru. A lot of models can use that transducer including the Side Imaging units. This is an example of a Quad Beam screen shot:

Since I have assembled a few dozen of those mounts and I have several, there is no issue with them. When you screw up and cross thread the nut, that is your fault, not Humminbirds. I have done it myself not paying attention. That mount is used with all the small transom mount transducers, 2D, DI, SI, and Quad Beam.

I cast into the wind or down wind when possible, and hold the rod tip close to the water's surface.That will take care of line bow. I fish weightless plastics no matter what the wind conditions are. I give the fish what they want and don't go fishless with some presentation they don't want.

The unit is a little better than you may realize. There is a setting in the Sonar menu tab that turns off the left side digital readouts in the full screen SI view that gives you the whole screen width for Side Imaging. SI Readouts is the menu choice.

All the Humminbird Side Imaging models come with a single transducer that does Side Imaging, Down Imaging, 2D Sonar and temp. There are at least 19 different models current and discontinued that do that.

If your fishing partner does not get depth readings when on plane, his tranducer is not mounted properly so it can. That goes for any sonar unit/brand. For those have no experience with marine sonar, the Humminbird menus are easier to learn than the Lowrance. Brand familiarity has everything to do with ease of operation no matter which. I use Humminbirds and the Lowrance menus are a nightmare to navigate for me.

When I was a teenager, I used to catch a lot of them in a river when night fishing with live bait for catfish. Actually caught more eels than catfish. The little ones were called shoe string eels and would tie your rig in knots before they were "dispatched". Skinned, cut up in 4"-5" sections, and fried, they were tasty. Those not eaten, when cold, would seem to get raw again. They roll around while cooking like frog legs do. They are a popular striper bait.
