  1. The weakest superline I use on spinning gear is the 6# mono diameter. That includes Fireline 14#, Stren Superbraid 20#, and Samurai 30#. The stongest superline I use on spinning gear is the 8# mono diameter and that includes Stren Superbraid 30# and Samural 40#, Fireline Tracer Braid 30#, Spiderwire Ultracast Ultimate Braid 30#, and Stren Sonic 30#.
  2. Gotta agree about the HB 798. I did some web searching and got one for $840 with free shipping. The money I saved paid for a Navionics Hotmaps Premium card.
  3. I used it a lot in my former 150 HP motor. It is not a BIA certified lubricant, but is "recommended" by the mfg. for TCW-III use. That may be a warranty issue for new motors. I have questioned several Amsoil reps about the non-certification and never got a straight answer. Availability is an issue since it is only available thru their dealer network which is like Amway, AVON, or MaryK. I used the HP Injector.
  4. If you check the Navionics website, you can see what bodies of water are HD surveyed. Anna is one of the few in Virginia. Even the 1' contour HD waters do not have that range all the way to the shore except at some isolated areas. Not all bodies of water even have 5' contours, some have 10' contours or some other range depending on what source is copied. Briery Creek Lake has 8' contour lines and Sandy River Lake has 10' contour lines.
  5. eyedabassman, I have the orange hook removal tool. It is at it's best when removing lures with treble hooks. I use the large size, heavy duty, curved jaw hemostats for other hook removal purposes. The next best tool to have is a side cutter for cutting a hook "just in case".
  6. If you are referring to Stren Superbraid, there is still some around. I saw lots of it in several tackle booths at a show this past weekend. Check e-bay I bought several hundred yards of the 20# and 30# in the gold color when I found out it was discontinued.
  7. It sounds like a perfect application for a Chatterbait.
  8. LAO162, if it is a casting rod, that is a good idea. If you put the top 3 sections facing down or maybe even the top 2 sections down and the third one at 90 degrees, it should work well. The guide positions should be based on the amount of flex the rod has. The more flexible parts should be down.
  9. Tpayneful, if you decide to put a SI unit on bow, get the internal antenna version and you will have your antenna where the trolling motor transducer is without having to mount an antenna. In the 798 model, the internal antenna model # is 798ci SI. That is the one I have.
  10. _Steve_ If you registered your 798, the free software upgrade is already in your account. All you have to do is download it to a blank SD card, put it in the 798, turn on the power and answer the questions to load it. It has been avaliable for the 798 since Jan 12. While you are at it, download Humminbird PC for management of waypoint, tracks, and routes.
  11. If you want to see your line better in all lighting conditions, use yellow. The color red is one of the first to not appear the same color as light diminishes. At no point does red fishing line disappear unless there is no light (dark). Red line will be visible as another color in black or brown as light is filtered by water depth. Stating that red line dissappears or is invisible is misleading as well as untrue. The red color may have some attracting value as long as it is held in shallow enough depths that allow red to remain unfiltered.
  12. I agree with burley, the higher resolution screens of the 565 and 570 are a plus. The 570 is a replacement of the discontinued 565.. A wider screen is a waste if they are not multi-function units such as GPS and Side Imaging. After the first column of vertical pixels, it's just history displayed.
  13. The Side Imaging can be used successfully on the trolling motor and some report they use it to keep up with schooling fish while fishing for them. Some Humminbird reps state forward speeds of as low a .5 mph can be used as well as up to 35 mph. While sitting still, just the rotation of the transducer will provide a satisfactory scan for one side of the side imaging. Adjustment of the scrolling speed is all that is required as long as the transducer is mounted to allow higher speed operation. I have my 798 set up for console and bow use which is quite easy to transfer with the plug-in mount. The Side Imaging Group at Yahoo.com is the best source of information for that technology since it has existed almost as long as SI has been available.
  14. Linda made a personal post on another web site concerning her health and thanking those all over the world for their support. She indicated that she will let her fans know the outcome of the "meeting" with management.
  15. It's called Titanium Alloy and it is not as hard as silicon carbide guides or even ceramic guides. Silicon (sand) particles in stained to muddy water will embed in the fibers of superlines and that is what grooves the guides. Silicon is just a little less hard than diamonds. Even dirty mono will goove some rod guides.
  16. Triton21, the hook is still the same split shaft model that doesn't require a split ring. The older Buddys had such weak hooks, I usually replaced them with a split ring and Owner Stinger Treble. That setup causes the hooks to get hung up on each other, on the body, or on the snap. Even though it is annoying at times, it is still better than taking a chance of loosing a big bass due to a weak hook. I've got about 100 of the 1/4 oz. size with no hooks that were given to a friend of Kendall. He got bags of them in various sizes and didn't use the 1/4 size. I told him I used the 1/4 the most often. Those were production defects that are barely noticeable.
  17. That's old news. The newer models are made in Florida and have been for almost 2 years. They come with what looks like galvanized hooks.
  18. I sounds like the varnish that is left behind when gasoline evaporates. That occurrance can be avoided by using a stabilizer all the time.
  19. Speaking of teflon tape, do any of you cover the holes in drilled reel spools to keep water out of the spool center and bearings? I do.
  20. You don't have to use tape with glue at all. You can use a section of teflon tape like used for sealing plumbing threads or you can use a strip cut from a plastic sandwich bag, garbage bag, or any other non-water absorbing material.
  21. If it is a single hook, remove the barb, you don't need it unless you are trying to keep live bait from slipping off.
  22. Thanks, Kenny The word was and the words going to be seem to have gotten lost in the messages. Yes, the 797 upgrade has been available for 7 days now.
  23. The posted picture is a single (picture) screen shot showing regular downlooking sonar above Down Imaging sonar just as it appears on a Humminbird Side Imaging unit. The Down Imaging feature was just available a week ago. That feature allows you to determine what the returns are as displayed on regular down looking sonar. You don't have to guess is it trees, fish, suspended solids, bubbles, etc. Lowrance HDS units have that capability also. The Side Imaging and Structure Scan horizonal returns are displayed from top to bottom like this:
  24. Newer technology by Humminbird and now copied by Lowrance gives you the option to "see" a couple hundered feet from each side of your craft and that view is somewhat video quality in comparison to the down looking, cone shaped, sonar pulse. Here is a "cover" view with traditional sonar and the newest down looking technology on the same screen that I took yesterday. It's not the best it can be since I am just learning how to get the best unit settings.
