  1. I got an e-mail from someone that went there yesterday. He had called the Worsham Grocery to check if they knew if it was frozen. They said it wasn't. He went to the North end and a lot of it was. He couldn't get to an area I suggested he try. He didn't catch anything and the water temp was 38. He talked to someone later that had been to the mid lake area and there was some open water there.
  2. #4 Owner stinger hooks. Any lure I buy with triple grip hooks gets those replaced and trashed.
  3. I use Side Imaging as I am fishing unless I am deep jigging or drop shotting. When I am casting away from the boat, seeing under it is useless. The depth is shown on the Side Imaging screen anyway. SI shows me where the fish are in direction and distance.
  4. One of the advantages of DI or DS is looking down in vegetation. With regular sonar and even Sturucture Scan or Side Imaging, you are looking at the weed stems from the side and it just looks blurry. With the down looking imaging beams, you see the individual weed stems. This is a weed bed point similar to hydrilla, it is egeria and extremely thick and sturdy like hydrilla is.
  5. Catt, the 570 DI as well as the other DI models have two 2D frequencies and two DI frequencies. 455 khz is used for both. The 2D 455 khz is a very small cone angle. Check the Humminbird web site for somewhat accurate specs for the new units. They are still attempting to correct the errors put out by the marketing dept. last year. What you see in catalogs and non-Humminbird advertizing is mostly incorrect including the new 2011 Humminbird catalog.
  6. rooster123, that is incorrect. There are two 788 models and neither are Side Imaging. One has DI and 2D, the other is just regular dual frequency2D sonar. The ci after 788 means Color and Internal GPS antenna. The only 700 series Side Imaging unit is the 798.
  7. Side Imaging and I did chose it twice. Also all Side Imaging units have Down Imaging too. Its the same with Lowrance HDS units with Structure Scan and Down Scan. Seeing away from under the boat is a great benefit especially since that distance can be in the hundreds of feet.
  8. I've got some Stren Superbraid on a couple of my spinning rigs that has been used for over 5 years. It is somewhat faded from the original Gold color but still performs great. If it is not frayed or too short, there is no need to replace it. As far as new and limp, you won't find a limper/softer/quieter braid that is better than Daiwa Samurai and none equal to it.
  9. This is one review of that line: Tested was the lime colour, 4 strand. The Feel of the line is a little rough and coarse with medium stiffness. The Breaking strain verses size is poor. Shape is flattish. The colour is pale with little gloss and would turn white, any chaffing could not be seen. Testing the line it had a lot of elongation prior to breaking. The weave of the strands are not that tight and can be readily seen and felt, easy to separate. The line would be pick up a lot of water. This is not a line I would pick. better cheapies available.
  10. Sam, I'm not to sure about that now after an e-mail I got from Humminbird customer service this week. This is part of it: "an acceptable display per our guidelines of quality control." That means that they will allow a certain level of defects to be put on the market with no corections done when a customer notices them.
  11. Are you aware that there are some people that are color blind? I used to work with a guy that couldn't see blue, red, green and some tints of yellow. He wasn't much use as a helper when working on electrical stuff. Riding with him and approaching a stop light was unsettling too if no other vehicles were around.
  12. A copy of the Strike King Super Quad. Maybe the Japanese make them in a better quality than those.
  13. I do if it isn't frozen. I base my presentations on the water temp. If the surface temp is below 39. I fish the bottom, Above 39 and I start looking shallower and have caught them on Traps in less than 5' depending on the weather trend. Warming up=good, cooling down=bad.
  14. PM sent
  15. About 40 bags of Zoom finesse worms a year.
  16. I use regular sonar, Down Imaging and Side Imaging on the trolling motor, wouldn't be without it. You may find a used Imaging unit in that price range.
  17. A few yards of nylon mono make a better backing.
  18. You will have the same experience with Humminbird old units also, but I am not familiar with any trade-in offers like Lowrance does. Each company developes new products and at some point don't keep stuff around to fix old stuff. That is the nature of the business. Buy the time a new unit is in production, they are already working the next new product, why?, the consumer whats NEW/IMPROVED stuff.
  19. You and your friend can try to get a job at the power plant. Employees can fish on the plant property. They have a playground, picnic area, and beach area on the property for the cold side.
  20. Eksmith, I don't know of any "hot spots", the whole lake is one. I can suggest a pattern based on when you are going to be there with areas that match that pattern. The "hot spot" will be where you catch them at a particular time; that can and will change at any time and any place. What is your fishing experience level, your craft, electronics, and tackle? You can respond via my e-mail address -- purdum43@aol.com
  21. In that case mount it like FFD did but put it closer to the motor mount/center of the boat. That will lessen the close object echoes that make those ??????? lines next to the centerline of the SI screen. You can add a shoot thru for on-plane 2D readings of you want. Its just a simple connection with a Y cable and an epoxied 2D transducer in the hull next to the hull drain. That is the set up that most use.
  22. Do you have a shoot-thru transducer for on-plane depth reading? Do you use the present transducer for on-plane depth reading? If so does it work all the time? Do you want the SI transducer to give you on-plane depth reading? Most SI and SS users do not mount those transducers at or below the hull bottom especially on stepped hull bass boats.
  23. Hot Rod, that is not a problem in recent years. All internal GPS antenna models have the antenna positioned in the housing so in-dash mounting is not an issue for GPS reception.
  24. eyedabassman, "the best one out there" for you is the one you can afford that does what you want. The absolutely best one is probably on a US Navy ship and cost as much as a house.
  25. Do yourself a favor and wire it directly to your battery. All you need to do is extend the two power cord conductors with size 18 guage wires of the same colors and connect the red wire to the positive of the battery and the black wire to the negative of the battery. Also put a spade 3A fuse on the red wire at the battery connection. You can get that fuse and a covered holder at Radio Shack along with the two wires. You will be glad you did. That will eliminate doing it later when you find out your boat wiring harness is not as electrically sound as you need. "Been there, done that" and so have many others.
