  1. At a At a minimum you need enough MCA to handle the outboard and enough reserve capacity to handle the deep cycle duty you need for not only the sonar unit, but any other electrical items you operate. You may have to upsize your battery or go dual. The jumper cables you have (should have) may help you decide if any change is needed. At the bow I use a Helix 12 CHIRP SI GPS along with a 360 for a total of 2.25 A. Then *** SI units at the console. I use a group 29 battery at lakes I can use my outboard. When I fish electric-only waters, I just use my bow setup with a group 24 deep cycle battery. An 8 hour cold day will be a strain on the 24 size battery. Your results may vary.
  2. Have not personally used one, but I know what it does and how it does it along with its features. It replaced the 598ci HD SI Combo and the 798ci HD SI Combo when those models were discontinued. It sort of combined those two. Does the same sonar functions of both and every other number series SI unit before and since until the new Helix series with CHIRP, minus any connectivity to other units. Con: it has a narrower display than its height. It is not what is best for Side Imaging since screen width is the most important feature for a Side Imaging unit. BUT is better than the discontinued 398ci HD SI Combo. Pro: since it is a Side Imaging unit, any Side Imaging is better than no Side Imaging. The close-out sales prices are very good. Highest screen pixel density in the industry before the Helix 5 series came out.
  3. Trolling motor transducer cable guard. Prevents damage to the cable when fishing in hard cover:
  4. Models in that price range---No.
  5. Any sonar unit will show the depth change for creek channels. You get the best profile by crossing it perpendicular:
  6. Yes, any SI unit that comes standard with the Compact SI transducer can get sharper images with the HDSI transducer. I have used both SI transducers on a 798ci SI Combo, 1198c SI Combo, Helix 12 CHIRP SI GPS, and Helix 7 CHIRP SI GPS G2.
  7. Answered your second question on the other post. No, only the Helix 9 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G2N, Helix 10 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G2N, and Helix 12 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G2N has the (MEGA) 1200 kHz Imaging.
  8. The G2 models have CHIRP 2D sonar and CHIRP Imaging, much faster processor. more View selections, Switchfire 2D and Switchfire Imaging, can handle all layers of the new Chart Select Layers map product, Auto Chart Live, reads all the features of the Navionics Hotmaps Platinum regional map cards, some different ways to change settings, can take a screen shot without creating a waypoint, has a Standby setting, has GLONASS on/off, more tri-views, and a horizontal temp graph. Maybe some other stuff--can't remember all of them without going through all the menus. Some of these features were only available on the higher end units before and some were not even available before on any unit. There is also the Helix 7 G2N versions that are linkable via Ethernet and can support the 360 transducer.
  9. Organized=not disturbed and all together Unorgainized = starting to separate because of preditors The "ditch" is the main lake creek/river channel at a bend. Yes, larger returns are larger fish (bass).
  10. No, every screen shot has active feeding going on. Image two shows some of the ones that were on the bottom like the others are trying to avoid being lunch.
  11. Look for ACTIVITY, unorganized schools, not organized schools. These will cover most technologies:

  13. Forgot to comment on shoot-thru. The Humminbird transom DI transducer used to have a shoot-thru version designated as shoot-thru and came with epoxy instead of a transom mount bracket. It was the XIH 9 DI T. I see it is now not recommended and has been removed from the website parts list. There is a transducer cable splitter that will allow the connection of a shoot-thru 2D transducer and transom mounted DI transducer to the unit. AS SIDB Y. That is the same splitter cable that is used with a shoot-thru 2D transducer and a transom mounted SI transducer. It disconnects the 2D crystal in the DI or SI transducer and connect the shoot-thru in its place. 2D/ Depth all the time from the shoot-thru and Imaging/Temp from the Imaging transducer all the time. All I have seen about a Lowrance HDI or DSI transducer is it is not "recommended" for a shoot-thru application. If I had to guess, the high frequencies with imaging don't do too well shooting through a boat hull. Too much signal strength loss.
  14. What you read about slow a processor was with the discontinued Elite 7 series first generation. Have not seen any similar reports about the Hook. They are both somewhat equal units (same screen size) with 2D sonar and down looking imaging with GPS/mapping. The Hook with Navionics+ is a package deal that includes a Navionics+ map card. It has 2D CHIRP sonar and Down Scan. It can use Navionics and Insight mapping plus some other map products. Refer to the unit specs on the Lowrance website. Do not know if it is linkable to other units to share data--don't keep up with L stuff much. The Helix 7 CHIRP SI GPS G2 is the second generation of the Helix 7 series (just added to the Humminbird website last week) and has CHIRP 2D sonar and CHIRP Down Imaging. It has a very good processor that can handle even the most featured map cards (tested that myself). It has built-in Auto Chart Live to create your own HD contour mapping in the unit's memory where there is none or where a location can be improved over a commercial map like the Navionics. It reads Navionics and Lakemaster digital mapping. It can also support all the map layers available with individual lake purchases of Lakemaster Chart Select Layers--new feature. It is not linkable to other units to share data. There is also the Helix 7 CHIRP DI GPS G2N that is the same as the G2 but has Ethernet connectivity to share data and support the 360 accessory.
  15. Went to BP today to look at what they have.. They didn't have any Striker units out. Sales guy said they had to pull them due to a legal issue. The Helix units seem to be pricey and don't come with mapping. The Lowrance Hook 4 with GPS and maps appears to be a decent unit. It will be on sale for the holiday... The Garmin cv (ClearVu ) is imaging, not 2D sonar. They renamed the imaging technology they copied from other brands due to the lawsuits. The unit on the Academy site shows what was called DownVu.
  16. The only Helix models that are legacy now are the Helix 5 and Helix 7 series. They have had their standard two year production run. The new ones are Helix 5 G2 and Helix 7 G2 with some additional G2N for the Helix 7's that are Ethernet capable.
  17. There is no legacy Helix 10 yet. The current Helix 10 series is still current. Look at the models on the Humminbird website. The G2N is just another addition to the series that has CHIRP Sonar and CHIRP Imaging. The MEGA SI version has 1200 kHz Imaging.
  18. The ONLY memory card you can use for Auto Chart Live is the Auto Chart Zero Line card. It must be the current version that is microSD and not the ones on sale that are full SD size. Zero Line is the zero depth or shoreline. There a millions of zero lines on the card. You sure can spend $100+ for each Zero Line card or you can have a single card that will last the rest of your life. The only function you can do with a blank memory card and Auto Chart is RECORD sonar logs and load the data to the computer software Auto Chart or Auto Chart Pro. Once the computer program processes the data, you load the maps to the included Zero Line Card to use in the unit.
  19. The smallest with GPS and mapping are 4" displays. Lowrance and Garmin have them
  20. Works very well to the unit's memory or directly to a Zero Line card.
  21. Look at the Navionics Web App and see what is covered.
  22. Copied this from the BFL site. "All boats must be propeller-driven, a minimum of 16 feet in length and have a rear deck (with a seat if requested). All boats must be equipped with wheel steering; no other steering device will be permitted. No barges or similarly cumbersome craft will be permitted. Each boat must have all required U.S. Coast Guard safety equipment. Boats must contain a properly aerated livewell space to maintain alive a limit catch of bass by both contestants. Maximum horsepower for all outboards used in tournament competition will be 250 horsepower" If you want to participate, you should read ALL the rules.
  23. "A fish is stimulated primarily through its lateral line. The lateral line is naturally tuned to detect low frequency (1 – 80 Cycles) vibrations created by small prey such as shad, herring, minnows and others. The Lateral Reactive Technology of the HydroWave produces these vibrations in patterns that create a predatory response." That is sort of far away from 200 kHz.
  24. With the G2N, it's hardware--(transducer and processing power), and software. The Helix 5 G2 and Helix 7 G2 handles mapping better than the current Helix 12. The only trickle down would be CHIRP like the current Helix 12 CHIRP SI GPS has plus CHIRP Imaging. No transducer difference between the legacy and G2. Possibly the Lakemaster Chart Select Layers processing.
  25. Since sound is the topic, do a web search for Bobo's Thumper.
